What is SMS?

It’s about quality…

Safety Management Systems (SMS) is an integrated set of work practices, beliefs and procedures for monitoring, supporting, and improving the quality of safety and human performance in an organization. SMS assists organizations in recognizing the potential for errors, and establishes robust defences to prevent them from causing injury or accident.

It’s about people…

Company-wide commitment is the key to successful safety management. It is only through the collective efforts of all members that an organization will successfully manage human error and safety programs effectively.

It’s about managing safely…

SMS focuses on the transition from managing safety to managing safely. SMS helps organizations become proactive in their approach to safety by actively identifying risks and hazards, and implementing appropriate solutions.

Why SMS?

It will be required by law

Since 2007, Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) requires every holder of an operations certificate issued by Transport Canada to establish a safety management system in their organization. Human Factors training has been regulated since 2002.

It will increase workplace safety

Statistics have proven human error contributes to over 80% of aviation incidents and accidents. A successful safety management system provides a systematic, explicit, and comprehensive process for managing risk and reducing human error.

It saves money and promises a return on investment

Costs associated with incidents or accidents include those for damaged equipment; increased insurance premiums; legal and damage claims; loss of business; loss of reputation; and decreased staff productivity. SMS saves money by reducing ALL costs related to incidents or accidents. SMS increases morale and productivity through proven safety practices and procedures.

The return on investment (RoI) of Safety Management Systems is immeasurable: smoother shift changeovers, improved teamwork, positive attitudes and/or general job satisfaction. From a marketing perspective, a good safety reputation directly contributes to increased profitability and repeat business
