if there's hair-splitting involved because candidates are similar, other factors such as legacy, etc. can push someone into strong candidate territory

Most of my friends have DC my daughter's age and so it's a common topic. We don't necessarily sit down for an hour and talk about it, but if somebody brings it up at lunch or something then we go ahead and talk about it.

That's why some classes are larger or smaller than others. But most of the schools really manage their numbers well. They have a good handle on it at this point.

A LOT of people at DH's bank have moved their kids from private to public, for a variety of reasons- and they are all still gainfully employed! (Not making 7 figures anymore, presumably, but still at least $500k I imagine). So yes, I do think that the select publics will be more sought after this year (unfortunately).

Oh you know, the insecure public parents who call you an idiot for paying for private and insisting that their kid is getting just as good of an education at their already overcrowded local public school. They probably convinced a lot of those Wall Streeters who aren't making the millions anymore that they should go public too. Lots more bodies to squeeze in.

this one is tough. I think 80% of children will do well at either. 10% need progressive, 10% need traditional. So, instead of trying to figure out the PvT thing - look at your specific choices and compare the schools to each other.

As a teacher, I would just say that if your child tends to wander aimlessly and have trouble focusing, you may thing progressive will be gentler for him or her, but traditional is really needed.

I looked at how my child responded to the playdates and she did not engage in the traditional settings, the schools I went into this thinking we'd prefer. She was good at working on her own at an early age and has tremendous focus and I think kids with those qualities excel in a progressive setting.

preschool teacher told us to go progressive because dc would always be in trouble at a traditional school--he has strong ideas about how he wants to spend his time. i had wanted a traditional. not sure whether the advice was good or not! now he just learns what he wants to learn at a progressive school. if he had gone to a traditional school, would they have made him learn in a more well-rounded way? or would he just have gotten himself counseled out? no idea.

I would love to know! They were the only one to snail mail the interview dates by mail, I assume they will snail mail the outcome, too?

we have been through middle school apps before. typically, many come on the day of notification or the day after. We are alos waiting to here from B, so that is my 72 hour bench mark. Not sure about Chapin since they didn't use on-line system last time we looked.

yes...they are losing their lease with the church (it owns the High School space and the gym) so they have to move....the high school will have to move sooner and then the whole school will move. No one knows where yet....rumors are East Side by river or UWS by Columbia....

Yes, the school has a 99 year lease with the church and the church wants the space back. Probably to sell to a developer. The property is worth a fortune and the church aint stupid. The fact is the school had many years to plan a move. I suppose they mistakenly thought the church would just renew the lease.

Does that mean they will put even less money into their current location for the next number of years? Ugh!
