Cookson stands by UCI leadership

The UCI Management Committee met in Louisville, United States, on the eve of the Cyclo-cross World Championships and publicly gave a united front in face of recent criticism over their handling of the Lance Armstrong investigation and the disbandment of the Independent Commission.

The Commission was scrapped last month after the UCI argued that a "truth and reconciliation commission" (TRC) should be implemented instead. The commission had been charged with investigating the UCI’s handling of the sport during the Armstrong era and allegations of corruption within the organisation.

At their management committee meeting in Louisville, the UCI announced that two members of their board - Artur Lopes (Portugal, UCI Vice-President) and Daniel Baal (France, Member) - would begin preliminary talks with WADA regarding TRC.

British Cycling's president and UCI management committee member, Brian Cookson, told Cyclingnews that he was fully supportive of the UCI’s leadership and stressed that the sport’s governing body were united in their approach to any possible TRC programme.

Cookson was touted as a potential candidate for the UCI presidency last month after it was reported by AP that members of the IOC had lost confidence in the UCI’s current president Pat McQuaid. However Cookson downplayed the speculation, giving his full backing to McQuaid. The president was roundly booed by spectators during the Louisville Worlds.

“Yes I’m confident in the current leadership of the UCI. It’s a difficult situation that we’re under at the moment but it’s important that the UCI remains united and the management committee have had some very interesting discussions and we’ve decided to do what we’ve done,” Cookson told Cyclingnews.

“The management committee are very committed to working with WADA. We’re going to figure out the next steps forward and make sure that we can do that in line with WADA and with their agreement and support.”

“The UCI is very united but it’s very concerned by external pressure but our job is to make sure that the sport of cycling develops and continues to grow and expand. Whilst we acknowledge that these are very difficult times we think that it’s very important that we support the current leadership and we’ll see where the next few months take us.”

WADA recently told Cyclingnews that the prospect of any TRC programme would be independent but that they would seek to establish the committee.

WADA contradicting themselves... Suggesting "THEY" would empower themselves choose "independent committee" when part of problem, not solution. Have we not seen this before?

The old boy network just keeps going on. They look out for each other so that their own personal interests are protected. They don't care about the sport or the riders. The fact is this. There is much CORRUPTION present in the UCI and no matter who says differently this fact will NEVER change until said corruption is SWEPT OUT. In every other sport, business enterprise, government office whether it be military, political or administrative if corruption or wrong doing is present it is REMOVED, eventually. Why is cycling and the UCI any different? It isn't and that is why as pressure mounts and becomes overwhelming the top management of UCI will also be swept clean. So, McQuaid, Verbruggen and all the rest of you corrupt self serving management of UCI please save the time and trouble and REMOVE yourselves from power. Do it NOW not later and save yourselves the embarrassment and humiliation and walk away now while you can. UCI management, I say this. YOU ARE NOT WANTED ANY MORE. SO GET OUT, NOW!!!

The UCI should get their heads out of the sand if they think any of them have done a good job in dealing with doping. They are one very ignorant group!
Pat McQuaid Must Go 3 days ago
McQuaid and Verbruggen's response to any outside pressure for UCI resignations will be exactly the same as Hein's response to the Armstrong doping questions... "Never! Never! Never!" They don't give a toss about the ordinary fans and the sport of cycling. Pat is odds-on favourite to retain the Presidency come September with Paddy Power! It will require a coup d'état from within the UCI...unfortunately the pronouncements from Cookson, etc don't give much hope? Let's hope his remarks are 'tongue-in-cheek. This Facebook page has tried to help by providing info and offering a forum...but the frustration is palpable.

Those who do not think corruption abounds in the UCI have their collective heads buried in the sand. It is quite remarkable to me that members of Pat's family manage to 'own' and control the new UCI expanded events in China, Africa and so on. Meanwhile I have sent letters to the UCI outlining the problems we have in Thailand with the development of the sport (and possible corruption) and I receive no answer. None at all. If PatM and his cronies were serious about expanding the sport in developing countries they would at least answer the concerns that we have in countries like Thailand. Instead their 'development' and 'expansion' focus is to create events in countries that can be owned by McQuaid's family. Not on I'm afraid. But it'll take a hurricane to shift the stubborn and may I say not terribly intelligent leader of the UCI.
