Mega Man fan-game Roll-chan is looking great

Chris Carter, Associate Editor
10:30 AM on 02.15.2013

Mega-fan Tarbo is hard at work with a Mega Man fan-game that's looking pretty faithful to the NES originals so far, with a few twists.

The above video features Proto Man, and the lovely and underutilized Stardroids from Mega Man V duking it out.

Already, people are trying to shout out "cease and desist" on Tarbo's YouTube channel. Yep, like there aren't a billion other Mega Man fan-games out there right now.

This is what Walking Dead would look like on Commodore 64

This is what Walking Dead would look like on Commodore 64 photo

While playing The Walking Dead, I often thought about whether it could have been released on earlier consoles and what it would look like, if it were.

Telltale Games writer and designer Mark Darin answers this question via an awesome gallery of images reinterpreting scenes of The Walking Dead into the Commodore 64's limited color palette and graphical quirks. I'm more of an Atari ST guy, myself, but I'll take it!

It makes me wonder: Do we have games like The Walking Dead, now, because technical improvements or design evolution?

Happy Console Gamer laments lost game saves of the past

Allistair Pinsof, Associate Editor
7:00 PM on 02.11.2013

So, maybe I just want an excuse to promote one of my favorite YouTube gaming channels?

In Happy Console Gamer's latest video (of which he's had a couple lately), he looks back at some painful memories of losing game saves -- something I can relate to, growing up in the pre-Cloud, pre-HDD days of game consoles. He recalls a particularly painful memory of some untrustworthy kids deleting his Symphony of the Night save.

I love HCG's frankness and personality. There are so many phoney and forced YouTube game channels out there. His is one of the few that I'm always able to connect to and enjoy; however brief and scarce the uploads may be. If you haven't visited his channel yet, check out his massive backlog of great classic game videos and his recent worst box art video. Time well wasted!

Tamagotchi mounting a comeback on iOS and Android

Tamagotchi mounting a comeback on iOS and Android photo

Bandai has announced plans to resurrect Tamagotchi on iOS and Android devices. While the handheld digital pet never truly went away, its star certainly has faded since the late nineties. Perhaps the popular egg-shaped toy has been out of the public consciousness just long enough now for people to start feeling nostalgic about cleaning up virtual poop.

Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. is said to feature a range of mini-games in addition to a retro mode reminiscent of the original toys. Oh boy, mini-games! Look out for it on the App Store and Google Play sometime soon.

Dig Dug parody video takes Ke$ha to the arcade

Conrad Zimmerman, Director of Video

Destructoid contributor Ian Bonds was seemingly too humble to post this video. Either that, or he doesn't really love us as much as I thought, because this music video created to accompany his parody of Ke$ha's "TiK ToK" is the kind of thing you really ought to be showing the people you claim to care about.

This Super Mario kimono is high-class fashion

In the fashion world, "retro" is in. I should know because I am a fashionista because I've been playing a lot of Style Savvy: Trendsetters on the 3DS, so I'm up on my sh*t. You couldn't be a more fashionable guy than me.

So when I tell you this Super Mario Bros.-themed kimono is high fashion, you know it's gotta be gold. And the little Famicom controller atop the obi is the perfect touch.

These pics come from Japanese culture site Hiyoko-G as part of a regular feature that collects photos of folks rocking various gaming T-shirts and other articles of clothing. In this 21st edition, we've got hand-knit Mario and Luigi sweater and a hoodie that looks like a garbage dump of Super Mario Bros. data. You'll also find a Japanese musician by the name of JUN-ROW rockin' a Goomba cap, diamond shades, and a sweet Rokko Chan T-shirt that I totally want.

$550,000 eBay auction for 330 consoles, 6850 games

$550,000 eBay auction for 330 consoles, 6850 games photo

Wow. So who's got half a million to spare for an ultimate collection of videogames?

The eBay lister videogames.museum is getting rid of his massive collection, which consists of 330 consoles, 6850 games, 220 controllers, 185 accessories, and a ton of promotional items. Most of the consoles and games even have all their original boxes.

It's seriously mind blowing just looking at all the photos on the eBay page. He'd make a killing focusing on selling all this stuff individually, especially on the rare promo items. But take a closer look at this collection and you'll see a crazy obsession. It's understandable he just wants it all gone in one big attempt.

Even if he does get his $550,000 asking price, it's going to be hell when it comes to shipping. Here's a full list of all the items he has on sale.

GOG.com introduces franchise bundle deals

GOG.com introduces franchise bundle deals photo

One thing that GOG.com has been missing is the ability to buy a whole franchise or series of games for a special discounted price, outside of their special promos. Well, it seems like the classic games store have been thinking the same thing as they've rolled out a trial of reduced price franchise bundles today.

So if you've been holding off buying some or all of the Zork, Gabriel Knight, Tex Murphy, Phantasmagoria or King's Quest titles, now's the best time to pick them up. Discounts range between 15 and 30% off, and there's even a deal for 20% off a Wadjet Eye bundle with the top quality Gemini Rue and Resonance included.

Scott Pilgrim DLC has last-minute delay

Scott Pilgrim DLC has last-minute delay photo

Last week, we reported on an announcement regarding long-anticipated downloadable content for Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game posted to the Tumblr of Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley which vanished into thin air as mysteriously as it appeared. The post in question had stated a release date of February 5th for the content, which is expected to add Wallace Wells as a playable character and implement online multiplayer.

Today, we've received word that the content has been delayed once again as Ubisoft sent us the following official statement:

The downloadable content for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game has been delayed for fine-tuning and to incorporate feedback from the passionate Scott Pilgrim community. Ubisoft is addressing feedback from the community on the best ways to honor retro games in the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game DLC in an accurate and respectful manner. Ubisoft, and the new team developing the DLC, respect creative properties and, of course, want to be sure to deliver a game experience that is a proper tribute to the Scott Pilgrim franchise.

I suppose their hearts are in the right place and, really, if you're going to take years -- plural -- to add content to a game based on a license, you had probably ought to get it right when you release. It does make one wonder at the relevance of the game by this point, whether anyone will really care if Wallace Wells ever becomes playable. But, then, even writing this has given me a bit of an itch to give Scott Pilgrim another go around so, maybe it'll work out alright after all.

This is what happens when SRPGs and Football combine

It's SuperBowl Sunday, making it the most appropriate time ever to talk about Footbrawl Quest, a free football SRPG with randomly generated maps. So if you don't care whether or not birds are better than gold hunters (they aren't), you can at least have some American football on this, the holiest of all holidays.

It's similar to what I know of the Blood Bowl franchise, except way simpler and way more free. Download Footbrawl Quest here.

Dreamcast lives on thanks to a pair of new games

Dreamcast lives on thanks to a pair of new games photo

The Dreamcast has been dead for well over a decade, but the venerable console's library still grows to this day. Slowly but surely independent developers continue to release games the platform, such as Gunlord, hoping that its vocal community of supporters still care enough to support "brand new retro games."

And it appears that they do. A shmup by the name of Redux: Dark Matters turned into a surprise success on Kickstarter last year. Hucast Games raised more than double its original $25,000 goal and is currently putting the finishing touches on the product. That's not the only thing that they have in the oven, however.

The Ghost Blade is an arcade shooter said to feature an elaborate scoring system and several games modes. The title is due for release sometime later this year, but those interested in pre-ordering can reverse a copy directly from the developer starting tomorrow.

Old Nintendo game translations were fun!

Tony Ponce, Associate Editor
8:00 PM on 02.02.2013

The adorable (and undeniably Canadian) Rinry used to be able to pump out fun, nostalgic videos at a fairly decent clip. But ever since she became a mommy, she hasn't had as much time for video production. 'Tis a shame, 'cause her stuff is still the best!

In this little throwback, Rinry reminisces about the old days of poor English translations on the NES, SNES, and Game Boy. Some notable cases -- like FFIV's "You spoony bard!" and Metal Gear's "I feel asleep!" -- have become quite popular over time. Others -- like the grammar nightmare of the original Zelda's opening text -- have been cleaned up in subsequent releases.

I loved all those little hiccups in games! Made them feel genuine in a way, like the scrawny kid in PE who always comes up short in the fitness exam but still gives it his best every time.

Mega64 revisits a classic with BurgerTime

Hamza CTZ Aziz, Managing Director
6:00 AM on 02.02.2013

Mega64 has been putting out videogame parodies long before YouTube was even a thing. One of their earlier works from Mega64: Version 1 featured a BurgerTime parody, which happens to be one of my favorites skits from them.

It's really cool seeing what their videos were like in 2005, as it just shows you how far the guys have come with making dumb Internet videos. The commentary on the DVD for this spoof is also pretty funny, as you get the backstory on how some random dude started talking to Shawn while he was trying to film (you can hear it in this video in fact), and how the guy waiting for his order next to Rocco prevented the restaurant from calling the cops on the guys.

Developer releases full Retro City Rampage map photo

Vblank Entertainment has released the full map for Retro City Rampage in image form -- spoiler alert -- it's huge!

But the world map wasn't the only thing that was released however, as the entirety of the game is pretty much accounted for. Can you find the Destructoid Robot Factory?

In addition to looking at the sprawling map and planning your next crime spree, you can also enter a contest. Just go to the following link, choose a new color scheme, and enter for a chance to have your scheme featured in the game. Sweet!
