Kitchen dreams: Tour some of North Shore’s finest

If the kitchen is the heart of the home, the Designer Kitchens of the North Shore tour should make many hearts beat a little faster. Presented by the Junior League of Evanston — North Shore, the May 3 event features six homes in Winnetka and Wilmette, all centrally located to the Winnetka Community House.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel was among 300+ guests at a party at S. R. Crown Hall, IIT campus, 3360 S. State St., Chicago, to mark the 127th birthday of architect Mies van der Rohe. Family Service of Glencoe (FSG) held their annual fundraiser “A Glencoe Fair Under the Stars” on May 4, in Ravinia’s Dining Pavilion in Highland Park. Approximately 240 guests attended the event which raised over $60,000 to support FGS’s family-strengthening programs and services, including professional, affordable counseling for individuals, chidren, teens and families, available at a sliding scale; youth and family outreach programs including Glencoe Parent Connection, 24-hour a day; 365-day a year crisis intervention support in partnership with Glencoe Public Safety; senior citizen assistance and more. Greenheart International celebrated its official launch from 7 to 10 p.m. on May 3 at Loft on Lake, one of Chicago’s premier green spaces. More than 120 people attended the Oakton Community College March Madness event, which was held March 23, at The Glen Club in Glenview. The event raised more than $6,700 for Oakton’s Student Scholarship Fund. At 5:27 p.m. on April 20, excitement was building at the Hilton Chicago Northbrook. Children were doing splits, and dance moves, preparing for their big moment on stage. They’d be performing for the High Hopes Annual Spring Benefit for Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook that was about to welcome more than 200 guests for hors d’oeuvres and dinner. Cindy Galvin, owner of Maze Home Store, created a special tablescape, “Chinese Ancestor Portraits: Art Honors the Family”for the Chicago Flower & Garden Show at Chicago’s Navy Pier held March 9-17. Bernadette Elenteny Joyce is an artist in her own right — but perhaps her strongest art is teaching. Joyce is one of two outstanding contributors to the local arts scene and to the Art Center Highland Park who will be honored at the Center’s spring gala, “Celebrate Art…Canvas, Cocktails & Cuisine.” The evening includes shows of Addie Davis quilts in Fireplace Gallery and works from over 20 artists in the Joy Horwich +2 Gallery.
