"The wonderful, weird and wacky rub shoulders with cheese and tosh on this disc of Australia’s liveliest choir. But on the whole I loved it. Skip over the synthetic rendition of Rachmaninov, and some overblown stuff by the choir’s director Gordon Hamilton. But listen to his pulsating choral impression of a digderidoo, or his whimsical compendium of his friends’ Facebook messages, or Robert Davidson’s We Apologise, slowing down Kevin Rudd’s (the then Prime Minister) 2008 apology to Aborigines into a protracted scream. The breathy sound is very different to European choirs. But that’s refreshing too. (Warner Classics; out now)
