Gamers need to 'quiet down' says CA senator

Author of unsuccessful violent game law Leland Yee criticizes gamers and industry at large in wake of deadly Connecticut shooting.

California senator Leland Yee, whose much-publicized violent game law was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2011, has offered a new message to gamers: quiet down. Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle in the wake of last month's schoolhouse massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, Yee criticized gamers and the industry at large.

"Gamers have got to just quiet down," Yee said. "Gamers have no credibility in this argument. This is all about their lust for violence and the industry's lust for money. This is a billion-dollar industry. This is about their self-interest."

Yee is not the only politician taking aim at the game industry following December's deadly shooting. Politicians in Washington, DC, as well as President Obama himself, have put forth legislation and orders aimed at examining violent entertainment and what role it may play in real-world violence.

This guy is so oblivious to gamers, that this out of touch with reality congressman does not realize that the vast majority of gamers are of voting age. This one's going to hurt come reelection.

Lets just ponder this for a moment, what is the largest cause of death in the united states? Lunatics with software or lunatics with military grade weapons?

Rayrota

Yeah, what would gamers know about...games? Clearly games are at fault, not the over saturation of assault weapons, not the laughable gun laws, not the cuts to mental health programs, not the abundance lunatics with easy access to guns who think the government is out to get them, not the endless fear-mongering by right-wing pundits, not the military's glamorization of war, not this country's general glamorization of guns and gun culture, oh no  that's silly.

Are you serious, Yee? How about YOU keep quiet, because YOU have no credibility!

YOU SIR, NEED TO QUIET DOWN!! It is YOU who have no credibility in this argument, being you're only interested in your own benefit by trying to make a name for your self on a hot button issue. Your first attempt was a failure and you piggy backing on this unfortunate occurrence will fair you no better. No one wants to take the blame for a massacre, i get that, but stop trying to place blame on a medium. It's individuals, society, MORALS that are to blame, but of course lets not fix that right? cause you can't right? stay out my games you parasite, go make a name for yourself by curing cancer  not on the graves of children.

Thank you. I'm just getting real tired of these leech politicians throwing their name in there (in this losers case, again) trying to get recognition over the deaths of children. go build something, go create something that helps mankind. Instead its just jumping on the band wagon, while also insulting my intelligence because i'm a gamer i need to quiet down and that i have no say. just makes me not want to sit down and shut up even more.

Games aren't the problem. Neither are gamers. Just because some nut case does something heinous and happens to have Mario and CoD on his shelf, doesn't mean it was the game that made him do it.

I'm pretty sure at least one of the murders had water to drink the day of their killings, maybe there is something in the water. So why aren't they attacking that in the same way? Oh wait that would be stupid just like this argument

Every time there is somekind of horrible gun crime in the United states some polotician comes in and blames gaming! Its an absolute joke, If games were to blame and sensorship put on them are they going to do it with films - the internet - the news or army recruitment PLEASE i wish these miss informed poloticians would get there head out of there behind and stop blaming the gaming industry. I grew up watching freddy cruger and the Jason from friday the 13th. I havnt gone out with blades on my fingers or a machette causing mayhem. If there worried about the content then they should clamp down on parents who let there kids play on 18 rated games or educate those parents to be more vigilant. I never hear about tarantino being to blame for any of it because poloticians who make these statemants like movies and probabley dont play games.

This is NOT about our supposed 'lust for violence', this is about our-and the gaming industries-right to free speech and expression. This is about our freedoms to seek what entertainment we wish, our freedom to not have the government dictate what fantasies, what stories, what games are good and bad. It's a little thing called the Constitution of the United States, and it puts the onus on you to find out whether video games are harmful to the public-which countless study has found they are, in fact, NOT. The last thing gamers have to do is quiet down and let agenda-pushing government weasels trample on our rights, and any self-respecting person, gamer or not, would oppose this asshole's assertion that we should shut up and take it from the government.

This politician has balls saying that we gamers have no "credibility". FYI-We do have credibility, b/c we pay for these games with our own money or CREDIT cards. There has always been a ratings system. So there are already rules. This punk politician is only mad b/c he has no control over the gaming industry. He should get the hell out of politics and get lost. What a pathetic loser.

Posting this here is a red rag to a bull. Clearly this is a prejudiced audience here on gamespot. As a gamer who plays a variety of game genres including shooters, I have to say it is time we get more creative about game types. Why are shooters and games that kill so damn fun? I too am not overly violent despite playing these games but I can understand the concern, especially if you are looking at games from the outside. Perhaps a bigger issue is the sheer textual abuse (violence) in some game communities. Speaking of which I am bracing for the onslaught people! :)

PacoTaco

@Arrwmkr Most Nintendo games are far less violent/bloody than say..GTA or Assassin's Creed.  The Wii was the best selling console of the last generation.  Clearly games that focus mainly on gameplay can sell regardless of the level of gore - just look at Gran Turismo, Nintendogs, Minecraft or The Sims.

I think large developers are getting fairly lazy though.  It's hard to sell a non-traditional game idea to a bunch of stockholders.

None of this means that the developers are responsible for the actions of a player who purchases their product.

@Arrwmkr :  (Arrow-maker?)  Your post is one of the too-few self-reflective posts on here.  (I've read the comments below, and re:"textual abuse" your observations are spot-on.)  Many of the comments lend credence to the Senator's remarks.  If, perhaps, he would have used the words, 'Gamers need to think before they speak, think again, and then speak,' the resulting dialogue would be more productive.  (That's my interpretation of his intent.)    [For what it's worth:  I was/am a supporter of Yee's legislation that was overturned by the Supreme Court.]

@Arrwmkr Problem is media and politicians arn't really interested in making people see games from the inside. They just want to fear people into buying their products. And in the case of politicians trying to get/keep their vote by pretending to fight something "evil".

Games are the easy scapegoat of today, a perfectly simple explanation (or they would have you believe). Even tho reallity, like always, is much much more complex.

But hey...no fact politics and media are hot these days!

It's quite amazing, that in a country that attributes itself as the 'land of the free' (and all that stuff). That a senator, a people's representative and servant, someone whose career is defined by the will of the people and made by the will of the people, actually has the audacity to say a certain group of people should 'shut up', because he doesn't like what they are saying.

He's quite possibly one of the worst politician, i have ever seen in office, in a democratic country.

Please america, do something sensible, and get rid of this guy, it's your duty at this point.

Been frustrated with the biased superficial reporting of the majority of the mainstream media for a long time. Also of some 'scientific study' btw. I know it is impossible to draw conclusions from a single case but i have been playing violent video games all my life and i have never struck another person in anger. In fact i quite think that violent video games offer me a way to get rid of any aggression in a non-violent way.

Oh for love of god. You know there is millions upon millions of gamers who havent even hurt anyone in their entire fucking life! so gamers have place in this argument, also some of those are voters too... Luckily i happen to live country where shooting is quite rare(thanks to very though gun laws) so these type of idiots cant blaim video games. Also there is violent tv shows and movies out there too. Do you blame video games causing war in afganistan or causing terrorist attacks? No you dont, because that would be stupid as it is stupid blame them causing shooting. There have been shooting way before video games BTW
