51 Enlightening, Awareness
In a context of enlightenment, a new beginning, we utilise (sudden) awareness.

Trigrams : enlightenment (bottom), awareness (top) : with/from enlightenment comes awareness. [thunder over thunder]

The mud from which 51 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 35 - bringing something into the light.

A situation covering an intense moment of sudden enlightenment/shock/surprise and accompanying awareness of the consequences of such.

Commentary :

Cooperative format : In hexagram 51 we are at the explicit moment when one detects a transition from stillness to movement. An arousing influence that inspires one to action. In the image, the feelings of anxiety and fear are enhanced in the people by the powers that be, such that any change in the environment will trigger these emotions and the change is thus quickly detected. Contextually, we combine inspiration with disentanglement (independence) to get a moment of enlightenment and awareness.

In the senses world arrangement this hexagram becomes the beginning as well as symbolizing birth. Hexagram 51 deals with a sense of beginning, newness.

Oppositional format : hexagram 51 reflects thunder doubled.

Structural Relationship (Being) : Hexagram 51 is the opposite of hexagram 57 in that 51 reflects enlightenment/awareness as as BEGINNING state, whereas 57 reflects the results of cultivation and becoming influential and so a more ENDING state. As such 51 is more 'in your face' regarding change - it is sudden and immediate whereas 57 is like the wind and can 'sneak up' upon you, reflecting change in context that forces change in the individual - the focus in 51 is more confronting, reflecting a sudden thundering rather than a gentle wind that is rising.

Temporal Relationship (Doing) : The goal of 51 is hexagram 16 (or 'how do I 16? - 51' - how do I plan, foresee? through awareness of all possibilities, 'new' insights)

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Thunder reflects raw Production. The focus is on a raw/new product - be it an idea or thing 'suddenly' coming into being.

51 is the goal of 40 (or 'how do I 51? - 40' How do I become 'enlightened/aware'? through the 'sudden' release of tensions)

Some PAIRINGS of hexagram 51 with other hexagrams:

PASSAGES:

51 : passages - through begin, new, raw, birth, arouse; 51 arousing comes from a context described by hexagram 35 - progress, bring into light

52 : passages - through end, old, refined, death, self-restrain; 52 discerning, self-restraining comes from a context described by hexagram 36 - uncompromising, hide light
In this pairing the 'enlightening moment' is represented in its unconditional form through the qualities of hexagram 51. This same 'enlightenment' is represented in its conditional form through problem solving, hexagram 21, leading to sudden 'insight'.
In this pair the 'newness', the raw, immediate moments of 'enlightenment' of 51 is complemented by the focus in 57 on cultivation of the raw, its refinement, issues of manufacturing etc. In the context of change, hexagram 51 reflects immediate 'in your face' demand for change whereas 57 reflects change like a rising mist where the focus is on context that changes in a subtle way until it forces one to adapt.

At the LOCAL level the focus is on an octet of hexagrams with THUNDER as base. The association is between hexagram 42 and 51, where the exaggerated sense of 'enlightenment', of sudden awareness etc (51), is reflected in a more balanced format through the process of augmentation (42).

A combination of problem solving (21) and bringing something into the light (35) is expressed in the focus upon enlightenment/awareness in hexagram 51.
