20 Admiring, Setting an Example (being made an example of)
In a context of devotion we utilise influence.

Trigrams : devotion (bottom), influencing (top) : with/from devotion comes influencing. [wind over earth]

The mud from which 20 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 03, sprouting ('turn towards the sun')

Commentary :

In hexagram 20 we are setting an example through one's presence; being admired. However we need to be wary of the possibility that the power of our presence can cause people to make decisions based on our point of view, not their own. Here it is not so much our actions to others that can cause the problem (as in this hexagram's complement - hexagram 34) but more our own spirit.

(All four hexagrams (9,20,16,34) deal with the concept of personal power and it's influence as a function of the generic concept of seeking balance as symbolised by their base trigrams).

(The line interpretations have a bias of lines 1-3 dealing with those who are looking at the contemplator and lines 4-6 with the contemplative person. The traditional name of the hexagram is bias to the upper trigram.)

Goal of 20 - hexagram 14 (or 'how do I 14? - 20')

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Earth reflects Filtration (by faith, given rules). The trigram of Wind reflects Production (through re-production). This relationship is expressed as a focus on being admired, on setting an example to copy (and so reproduce something of quality).

20 is the goal of 42 (or 'how do I 20? - 42' How am I to be admired, respected and so used by others as an example to follow? Through augmentation)

Some PAIRINGS of hexagram 20 with other hexagrams:

The common theme in this pair is on attraction and admiration, be it of a collective (and so possible cult - hexagram 08) or of an individual setting an example ( hexagram 20).
This pairing reflects the passive form of motivation reflected in 20 (admiring) vs the active form of motivation reflected in 34 (invigorating).

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the EARTH trigram as base. In this sequence hexagram 20, the focus upon being an example, admiration, is 'opposed' by hexagram 16, the use of one's own foresight/planning. More so, the exaggerated sense of open enthusiasm, foresight, and planning is reflected in a more balanced format through being an example for others, a source of admiration and so motivation for others.

This pairing reflects a focus on low-to-high relationships, as (a) low approaches the 'high' (19) and (b) low admires, and so gets motivation from, the 'high' (20).

ADMIRATION:

19 : admiration (low-of-high) - through approach [defer]; 19 approaching/defer comes out of a context described by hexagram 04 - masking, socialising

20 : admiration (low-of-high) - through motivate (set an example); 20 admiration/encouragement comes out of a context described by hexagram 03 - sprouting, initial difficulties

The combination of a passive attraction, eliciting or working upon, one's sense of belonging, (08) with a focus on beginning development (sprouting, difficult beginnings - 03) is reflected in the properties of hexagram 20.
The overall commonality here is on 'lifting', be it through pass being and example to follow/replicate (20), or be proactively involved in the process of augmentation (42).
