50 Refining, Transforming
In a context of cultivation we utilise a sense of direction (an ideology).

Trigrams : cultivation (bottom), direction (top) : with/from cultivation comes direction. [fire over wind]

The mud from which 50 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 34, invigorating.

Commentary :

In hexagram 50,the establishment of order out of chaos, the generation of social foundations, does not guarantee development, they just set up a suitable environment. To enable social development, these foundations need to be refined. In the image, the idea is to adopt a single point of view thus forcing 'fate' to appear fixed. Any form of controlling influence introduces a fixed set of possibilities and excludes others purely by definition alone. Contextually, inspiration and excess leads to transformation.

Goal of 50 - hexagram 30 (or 'how do I 30? - 50')

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Wind reflects Production (cultivated). The trigram of Fire reflects Distribution. Production through distribution is expressed as transformation.

50 is the goal of 14 (or 'how do I 50? - 14' How do I transform? Through gaining power, wealth, being a center of guidance)

Some PAIRINGS of hexagram 50 with other hexagrams:

This pairing reflects the benefits of delay that lead to refinements - be it in the unconditional commitment expressed in 32, or the particular, and so conditional 'cooking' of 50.
This pairing reflects the concept of a 'raw' development (03) as compared to a 'refined' development (50). Thus in 03 the breaking through of a surface and so the sprouting of 'something' is complemented in 50 by a focus on transformation, on a need for a finished product to be 'cooked' prior to exposure to the environment.

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with WIND as base. Here the association is of 48 with 50 where the exaggerated sense of supplying nourishment through 'cooking' is reflected in a more balanced format through the establishment of a 'well' of nourishment (requires less energy over the long run).

TRANSFORMATION:

49 : transformation - through revolution (sudden), unmasking, revelation; 49 unmasking comes from a context described by hexagram 33 - trick, suck-in, withdrawal

50 : transformation - through evolution [cook] (gradual); 50 transforming comes from a context described by hexagram 34 - invigorating

The combination of commitment (32) with a focus on invigoration, inspiration (34), is reflected in the focus on 'cooking', of transformation expressed in hexagram 50.
