18 Correcting
In a context of cultivation we utilise discernment.

Trigrams : cultivating (bottom), discerning (top) : with/from cultivating comes discerning. [mountain over wind]

The mud from which 18 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 11, harmonising, balancing.

Commentary :

Hexagram 18 symbolizes degeneration caused by spiritual neglect and the corrections required to fix the problem; the price of too much cultivation.

(All four hexagrams,(17,18,27,28) deal with concepts of degeneration and methods of regeneration. These are consequences of the transition of time and are associated with their corresponding base trigrams of transition).

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Wind reflects Production (by cultivation). The trigram of Mountain reflects Filtration (through discernment). Production through Filtration is expressed in correcting corruptions.

Goal of 18 - hexagram 22 (or 'how do I 22? - 18')

18 is the goal of 26 (or 'how do I 18? - 26' How do I correct corruption? By holding firm to 'proper' traditions etc)

Some PAIRINGS of hexagram 18 with other hexagrams:

This pair reflects issues of 'getting involved', where in 46 we see the increase in entanglement with someone/something, and in 18 we see the involvement in the form of actively focusing on cleaning-up corruption.
This pairing reflects differences in (a) developing a 'new' belief system (17) vs (b) correcting the 'errors' that can pop up in 'old' belief systems - errors resulting from neglect or outright corruption (18).

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the WIND trigram as base. In this sequence hexagram 18, the focus upon correcting corruptions, 'opposes' hexagram 28, excess, going beyond what is required. More so, the exaggerated sense of excess, of 'going beyond what is required', is reflected in a more balanced format through the focus on correcting corruptions.

BELIEFS:

17 : belief - through establishing to follow; 17, following comes out of a context described by hexagram 12 - neutralising

18 : belief - through re-establish through correcting errors; 18, correcting comes out of a context described by hexagram 11 - balancing

The combination of getting more involved, more entangled and considerate of consequences of actions (46) with a focus on establishing harmony (11) is reflected in the properties of hexagram 18.
The shared theme here is a focus on maintaining traditions but also not allowing them to corrupt the present.
