47 Confining, Enforced Waiting, Set-Down Roots
In a context of containment we utilise intensity in expression.

Trigrams : containment (bottom), intensity (top) : with/from containment comes intensity. [lake over water]

The mud from which 47 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 10, conduct, treading (a path)

commentary :

Cooperative format : In hexagram 47 one is not in a position to do anything about existing ideologies. One therefore needs to control(limit) one's attitude. Develop a facade until times change. This is more a behavioural facade than that of 22, in that we are penned in. In the ideogram this is symbolized by a tree closely surrounded by a fence. This implies forcing (Stimulating) the roots to go deep, a form of external control on the 'free will' of the tree. Another word for this situation is imprisonment.

Oppositional format : lake against water.

Template format : Expansive Bonding in a context of Contractive Bounding; intensity in a context of containment.

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Water reflects Consumption. The trigram of Lake reflects cooperative Exchange. Consumption (containment aspect) through cooperative Exchange is expressed as 'setting down roots'. This is also reflective of being forced to set-down roots and so the focus on restriction of freedom. BUT the Consumption-*Cooperative*Exchange relationship suggests there is more of an element of cooperation in the act rather than opposition.

Goal of 47 - hexagram 17 (or 'how do I 17? - 47' How do I acquire a belief, someone/thing to follow? Allow oneself to be enclosed and so forced to send one's roots deep into the context - the belief)

47 is the goal of 58 (or 'how do I 47? - 58' How do I be enclosed/enclose? Intense self-reflection ans expression)

Some PAIRINGS of hexagram 47 and other hexagrams:

This pairing reflects an overall sense of being contained, as in legal containment (hexagram 06) and social containment (hexagram 47).
With this pairing, both 47 and 22 deal with enclosure but 47 deals with being forced to drive one's roots 'deep' due to the enclosure and so become more integrated with the context, whereas 22 builds a facade to attract attention to the exterior and so has a more differentiating aspect. Thus in 47 one is enclosed whereas in 22 one is doing the enclosure, the source is within as compared to 47 where it is without.

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the WATER trigram as base. In this sequence hexagram 04, the focus upon masking, socialisation, 'opposes' hexagram 47, the focus on enforced enclosure. More so, the exaggerated sense of forcing integration with the context through enclosure (47) is reflected in a more balanced format through the masking of youth through education (04).

This pairing reflects an overall focus on setting down roots, be they through forced enclosure (47) or willingly (48).

ENCLOSURE:

47 : enclosure - through force attachment, foundations; 47 forced enclosure comes from a context described by hexagram 10 - treading, follow a path

48 : enclosure - through well, nourishment, foundations setting; 48 a well, founding comes from a context described by hexagram 09 - small gaining

A combination of a need for compromise (06) with the careful following of a path (being bounded by that path rigid hierarchy of 10) (10) is reflected in the 'forced enclosure' of 47.
