Wednesday’s Pictures in the News starts out in a winter wonderland, where visitors walk through the snowy landscape at Grosser Feldberg in Germany. Cold weather was on the menu across the Atlantic, where commuters bundled up against the cold on New York’s 34th Street in Midtown Manhattan. The temperature was about 12 degrees, but with wind gusts of 15 to 20 mph, it felt more like 5 below. In Chicago, a firefighter’s helmet is covered with ice from single digit temperatures during a five-alarm blaze in a warehouse on the city’s South Side.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, during a hearing on Capitol Hill. Clinton warned of the challenges posed by rising militancy after the Arab Spring as she appeared before lawmakers Wednesday to be asked about a deadly attack.

In Asia, children play on a toppled mosque minaret in Pidie in Indonesia’s Aceh province following a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck off Aceh province, killing an 8-year old girl and injuring seven others; a Thai beautician gives a face hair removal treatment to a customer at a roadside shop in Bangkok; and an Indonesian animal vendor binds a monkey before selling it to a buyer at the Sungai Sarik Market in Indonesia.

Add stops in Afghanistan, Scotland and South Africa to round out the report.
