The Area 51 exhibit at the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas shares information about the military site in the desert.

Las Vegas: Area 51? Top-secret aircraft? This and more at talk

Move over, Scully and Mulder. Some of the secrets of Nevada’s mysterious Area 51 will be revealed Feb. 9 at the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas.

As "The X-Files" TV show told us, “The truth is out there.” But don’t expect tales of alien spacecraft and little green men during the Saturday evening lecture. The two speakers — T.D. Barnes and retired Air Force Col. Gail Peck, not Scully and Mulder — have worked at the installation known as Area 51, possibly America’s worst-kept military secret, but their remarks are expected to focus on aircraft from Earth, not outer space.

Barnes and Peck worked on top secret “black” projects at the highly guarded installation about 100 miles north of Las Vegas. It’s where some hush-hush military aircraft reportedly have been designed, built and tested.

Barnes led covert engineering projects with such names as Project Oxcart and Project Have Blue. Peck was the first Red Eagle, as...

Victoria new indoor market, to open in the spring, will be housed in what used to be the Hudson's Bay department store.

Canada: Victoria's new market to flaunt British Columbia's bounty

A new indoor market in downtown Victoria, Canada, will open in the spring, making Vancouver Island’s abundant produce available year-round. The Victoria Public Market at the Hudson will be home to goods produced by bakers, butchers, fishermen and florists, among others.

Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is at the southern tip of Vancouver Island. It's about 60 miles from Vancouver and about a three-hour (or less) ferry ride from Seattle.

The new market will be in what was once the Hudson’s Bay department store. It will offer a retail outlet for even the smallest producers, who can rent tables by the day to sell their wares.

On any given day, items for sale could include the beer, wine, bread and cheese needed for a picnic along one of the city’s many hiking trails.

The market also will host various educational and entertainment events, such as cooking demonstrations in a commercial kitchen and “urban agriculture” workshops. Kids can participate in...

Mexico: Punta Sayulita Surf Classic pits boarders against the sea

Surf and stand-up paddling (or SUP) fans can test their mettle against an international field of competitors when the fourth-annual Punta Sayulita Surf Classic kicks off March 8-10 in Mexico's Riviera Nayarit.

The weekend event, which raises funds for conservation and educational projects, features longboard and stand-up paddle surfing contests, plus SUP elite and distance races.

A surfing clinic also is scheduled for special needs and underprivileged children.

“This year's field is stacked with talent," said Kevin Roberts, the event director. "We are also very stoked to welcome back international reggae recording artist Mishka to perform a free benefit concert on the beach Saturday."

The event is named after Punta Sayulita, a resort community in Riviera Nayarit, which stretches north from Puerto Vallarta along the Pacific Coast. Several prime surfing beaches are in the area.

Winners do not receive monetary rewards, said Roberts.

“The primary consideration is to focus...

A rock leaves a trail behind it as it slowly makes its away across the playa. The pattern of the playa's surface is formed from hexagon-shaped cracks in the mud.

Roaming rocks of the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley National Park

In Death Valley National Park, you won't find much moving across the Racetrack Playa, a dry lakebed about three miles long and 1 1/2 miles wide. Well, except rocks. The playa, about 30 miles southwest of Scotty's Castle Visitor Center, is known for its mysterious moving rocks. No one has actually seen them move, and no one is certain about how they move, though the tracks they leave behind indicate that they do wander. Some theories attribute their movement to rain and wind. Some point to ice. A few things about the rocks are clear. They eroded from nearby mountains and most are a few pounds, though some weigh hundreds. The surface they rest on is also unusually flat, varying only about an inch from one end to the other.

Hawaii: Aloha wear exhibit at the Bishop extended until Feb. 25

Visitors to Oahu who realize there’s more to island clothing than swimsuits and flip-flops may enjoy a visit to Honolulu’s Bishop Museum, where an exhibition titled HI Fashion: The Legacy of Alfred Shaheen has been extended until Feb. 25.

Shaheen is credited with elevating the Hawaiian shirt from kitsch to chic. After training as an aeronautical engineer and flying 85 missions during World War II, he spent about four decades designing colorful textiles that were then manufactured in his Honolulu factory.

The exhibit features more than 200 pieces of clothing created by Shaheen, including a variety of aloha shirts and his famous Hawaiian Bombshell Dress. Archival photos and ads help explain how his fabrics were conceptualized and, ultimately, marketed to enthusiastic customers worldwide.

There’s also space in the 5,000-square-foot gallery devoted to creative talents who’ve been inspired by Shaheen. Recently added to the collection...
