Natural Selection 2 Review Pulled

Review pulled due to inaccuracies; replacement in the works.

Hi GameSpot readers!

Yesterday, we posted our review of Natural Selection 2--but unfortunately, it's come to our attention that the review contained several inaccuracies. We take our reviews seriously, and we stand by our reviewers' critical analyses and writing abilities. However, our greatest responsibility is to you, our readers and viewers. We own up to our mistakes, and in light of the errors in the Natural Selection 2 review, we have chosen to remove the review and assign it to another author.

I apologize for the inaccuracies in the review. We look forward to publishing a replacement review once we have had a chance to fully explore Natural Selection 2.

Sincerely,

Kevin VanOrd, Senior Editor

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, you guys need more staff. And as quickly as possible.

*skimming through previous comments*

You know, I appreciate the distinction of only pulling off reviews thanks to factual errors, as opposed to mere divergence of opinion, but I'm not surprised that we've come to a point where one review needed to be pulled off.

Unfortunately, I believe all the noise about this or that AAA title review not receiving a high score (or CoD always receiving high scores or whatever, take your pre-fabricated complaint of choice) is preventing a lot of people, both on the writing and the reading side, to notice you don't get to that point - having to pull off a review thanks to *factual errors* - overnight.

I thought of writing a whole diatribe on what I see as major problems in Gamespot's reviews of late, but what's the use? It will be buried by all the noise. Think about what I said in the previous paragraph and take it however you feel like.

Myself, I believe that to get to the point where a review with factual errors is published, you have to pass for 'lighter' stages - such as letting reviews laden with cheap cynicism and/or no diligence at all be published - that don't become immediately obvious because there'll always be someone ready to pretend nothing serious really happened. After all, 'it's all just opinions', right?

Until it isn't, and suddenly you get a *very concrete* problem that demands a drastic measure.

Think about it. Divergence of opinions is nice, but it's also very, very easy to fall behind it as a shield against all criticism.

Hey Im sorry if i go out of you're current subject but i need help, I know that its not very popular but you know Ben 10 Omniverse game and show, if you don't then look it up its easy to find, well I know that there are some people who like the show or game and it may be childish but i like it to for some reason. What im trying to get to is that the Ben 10 games have all been not only the same but they've made it worse, im the type of gamer that likes games basiclly im pasionate for games and other stuff but it enrages me when they ruin a game that ooses potential and to be honest they messed up with Ben 10. What i mean to say is that a guy with the ability to turn into every creature in any universe is an idea of extreme potential and ive gott tons of ideas on how to make it better but apparently the company is to stubborn to listen to fresh new ideas the companies still dont understand the concept of making games cause making games is more of creating a world to entertain others so people can enjoy themselves for a while. Look im only gonna write my ideas to see if you like it if you dont nufsaid but if you do try to help me make them listen to reason cause today the companies intrest is on the profits. Okay so my idea is to remake Ben 10 Omniverse keeping the same characters bringuing back a few villains, look most o the Ben 10 games are beatemup games and today we can turn it into a free roam sandbox game guive you missions ,side missions, extras, and challenges a good example would be Batman Arkahm City lots of side missions and challenges plus extras with collectibles with but the players need great rewards like if Ben gets every collectible in the city he guets a new and very cool alien in his omnitrix or extra tech for upgrades or new powers or upgrades for his aliens, now for the free roam sandbox make it like Assassins Creed that you run around a city but if you want to go to another city then you go through a checkpoint but in the new Ben its the same with cityes exept that if you want to go to another planet you do go to a checkpoint but you travel to another planet like in Kingdom Hearts, now on to the powers well we all now Ben uses his omnitrix to turn into all his aliens well how about start with only ten but guive him throughout the story and side missions all the others that he has ever turned into ,well as long as their not useless, and let him use a quik selct like the resent ones but bring back using the omnitrix like press a button and the omnitrix shows up in the screen and you can spin the omnitrix bar checking wich one you want to use, now on to the powers well I personally like the combat stile of Prototype cause for me half the fun was to choose what to fight with, well in the new Ben 10 the choosing part is the alien you want to use the but he combat I want you to feel overpowered by making you defeat an army on youre own taking down hundreds of enmies but a good game cant be a walk in the park so every alien has a weakness so every enemie will have something that can completely neutralize that alien that way you will change into another one but you can still keep fighting with the same one but itll be a lot more difficult to win. Also I would love to use great powers like in Prototype instead of lame combos that dont even let you do awsome stuff and some aliens have special skills like Grey Matter can get into any machine or robot to control the machine ,or Wildmutt can sniff out hidden objects, tech, or collectibles,or like Upgrade that he can posses any machine and he can upgrade them with missiles or spikes or the ability to make a car fly or ride on a wall that would be insane. And at the end of the game do like in Kingdom Hearts on one of the PSP in wich after the ending they put almost impossible fights agains ultimately strong bosses and i you win obviously you will get an ultimate price like an alien that hasnt appeard on the show yet but thats not my choice. O and ive had complaints from a friend "@" who wants to use alien x well how about guiving Ben in part of the story an power bar that Asmuth made like an upgrade for the omnitrix that lets you use not only alien x but the full potential of all the aliens like Upgrade can posses any machine but with the power bar you can not only recharge the omnitrix energy but you can also  posses huge machines like full ships o just to be clear put EVERY ALIEN even way big in places he fits o and add enemies as big as Way Big. And to finish this try to make the story like a war between species in huge battlefields making Ben fight in wars and cities. Well thats all ive got i hope you enjoy my ideas so pleas if you think its worth youre time help me make D3Publisher listen so they make a good Ben 10 Omniverse game.

That's what happens when someone writes a review out of the press release without touching the game.

By the way, not that I'm complaining or anything, but the RE6 review kinda forgot to mention you can play as an enemy on another player campaign, I would say that was worth mentioning.

I'd say it's worth including the original review, for the sake of integrity. It was in the link on the side of the page("Never Publish This!"), but it's gone now.

I've really been wondering what the original reviews inaccuracies were?  I didn't happen to catch the review when it was up and I'm having a strangely difficult time suppressing my urges to be nosy.  I guess I'm just curious by nature.  Either way, I would have been surprised to see the game get a low score.

Anyone have a link for the original review?

Seems silly for metacritic not to take a revised review. Sounds like a policy that favors simplicity rather than quality... I would guess that, if this wasn't their policy, some sites might make a regular habit of changing their reviews if they were in stark contrast with the majority.

@Double_Wide We do not remove reviews because "persons on Internet, such as Double_Wide, disagree." In this case, there were multiple factual errors, and we took did the proper actions in light of them. It is a very rare occurrence, but in the case of actual errors (as opposed to people not sharing the same opinions), we own up to them and take steps to correct them.

EnderWiggin

@Kevin-V @Double_Wide Very rare occurrence? That's a good one. Many "persons on Internet" have cited factual errors many times, but YOUR reviews never get fixed. I guess maybe you're usually too busy congratulating yourself for being so great to notice.

Stating that I have a whole list of reviews that need to be considered for removal isn't belittling anything...just stating my opinion on SOME of GS' reviews. If Kevin or anyone else takes offense then: 1. Don't have a comment section and 2. Don't have a job where you regularly hear back from people.

Its no different then me going into a Starbucks and letting the manager know that on occassion their coffee is a bit too cold. If you can't take critisim then kick rocks!

I decided to stop reading gamespot due this review. Glad one of my friends redirected me here after I had told everyone I know about how bad site has gone. I don't expect you guys to give the game 10/10 or anything of the sort but I do expect even slight attempt into objective journalism.

I e-mailed metacritic about the score. This is their answer:

"Metacritic does not pull reviews or scores - publications get one bite at the apple, and GameSpot knows this.  We share a parent company.  If they decide to bump up a score, lower a score, or not review it again, we stick with the first review and score.  It's a critic protection measure."

@SAGE_OF_FIRE  @skuggan555  @Keshy  @SideWinder6 if you think about what MC is trying to accomplish by not allowing revisions, it makes sense.  i think you are passing judgement a little too harshly without properly considering the reasoning.
