I played the first Chaos Rings. I didn’t like it. Its plot and characters were like a parody of a bad Square Enix game, it was structurally impractical to play on a commute, and it was (and is) overpriced, especially given the “HD version”. At the time it was good to see Square do anything new on iOS, but it was really proof that the company didn’t get the platform, not that they did.
At least, that’s how I saw it. You’re free to disagree.

Neither do I, necessarily — I’ve paid for expensive-ish iOS games like 428, Ghost Trick, pretty much everything Cave’s put out, and more — but I think FF:ATB indicates that Square is trying to move more in line with the norms of the platform. That’s why it’s in quote marks. The game does play to iOS’s natural strengths more than pretty much any other title Square’s put out to date, if nothing else.
I didn’t have much fun trying to play Secret of Mana on a touchscreen, is what I’m getting at.

None of those games are cheap, original, and mobile-friendly.

FFIII is pretty good, but not really suited to mobile — and charging over $15 for separate iPhone and iPad versions is inexcusable, though at least IV is universal.
I’d like Square to make simple, cheap mobile games that look great and play well in short bursts, and I thought this might have been exactly that. Instead, it’s a GREE game in disguise with a $4 barrier to entry.
