Nexus 7 owners, it's your turn. Earlier this evening, before many countries even had access to Nexus 4 or 10 orders, Google began pushing the 4.2 (JOP40C) update to the Takju Galaxy Nexus. After some patient waiting, it appears the Nexus 7 is now ready for an update as well. In case you don't feel like waiting on the OTA though, we've got the download link and some super-easy instructions for manually updating your favorite 7-inch slate.

Prerequisite: Your Nexus 7 should be running Android 4.1.2 build JZO54K. You will not lose your data using this method.

Step 1.

Download the update zip from Google's servers (MD5: 7bee9b220c20979763af563cad56af94)

If you have a custom recovery, you can just copy it to the device, reboot to recovery, and flash directly as you would any other zip. You're done.

If you have the stock recovery, carry on.

Step 2.

Reboot your Nexus 7 and hold the VolDn button while it's booting up. Once you see the fastboot menu and the word Start, press VolUp a few times until you see Recovery and then press the Power button to enter recovery.

You will see an Android with a red exclamation point. Now press VolUp+Power together, and you should see the menu below.

Select the 2nd option called apply update from adb.

nexusae0_wm_IMG_20121009_124737

Step 3.

Connect the Nexus 7 to your computer with a USB cable.

Make sure you have a recent version of adb that supports the sideload command (if you don't, download the latest Android SDK to ensure your adb is up-to-date).

Keep the file you just downloaded on your computer and open up a command prompt (cmd in Windows, regular shell in Linux and Mac) in the same directory as the zip file.

Type in:

adb sideload 094f6629314a.signed-nakasi-JOP40C-from-JZO54K.094f6629.zip

You should see the progress bar go up to 100%, like so:

sending: 'sideload'  100%

nexusae0_wm_IMG_20121009_124956 nexusae0_wm_IMG_20121009_125353

At this point, the device should have started installing the update.

Step 4.

Reboot - you're done. Enjoy Android 4.2 on your Nexus 7!

Update: In case you're wondering, Gmail 4.2 with pinch-to-zoom and multi-user support are included. Here are some screenshots.

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Just flashed it. Grabbing screens after the dead battery gets some juice.

  • Joe DiPrimeo

    landscape was available on 4.1.2

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Woops, Liam copied a bit too much from the 4.1.2 update instructions. Fixing in a flash.

      • PhilNelwyn

        You confirm it?
Why doesn't the stock launcher on my Yakju Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1.2 support landscape mode?

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

There's nothing to confirm. Landscape launcher came to the Nexus 7 in 4.1.2. It's a fact. It's not enabled on the Gnex though.

          • PhilNelwyn

            Oh my... lol
Coming right from the Verge's article about Galaxy Nexus update to the comments section here.
            RTFA!

  • cro0707

"Reboot - you're done! Enjoy the new landscape support in the launcher."
^^^ This feature (landscape) is already added with 4.1.2.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      See my reply to @google-d2d2e3fbb9dde39f36b45475a4c55d39:disqus.

  • Ritz

    Flashing now! Thank you :)

  • cro0707

I was scared that my N7 won't receive update today, all news were for N4 and N10 about 4.2 this morning... Thank you :)

  • Andrew Townsend

So this is just an update zip? not a full image? Definitely going to wait for the whole rom.. My 16gb n7 kept failing on the auto update from 4.1.1 to .2 -_-

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Flash 4.1.2 system factory image from Google, then this OTA.

  • scuttlefield

Yeah! Flashed and done! Now just waiting for yakju.

  • http://profiles.google.com/marcusleejh Marcus Lee

    Does this break root?

    • ChavaM

      Always

  • TylerChappell

It does not break root, I have it installed on both my rooted Nexus 7 16GB and 32GB Nexus 7. Also, one thing I am noticing is that they made the dock icons noticeably smaller for some reason. Everything appears to be working! Including the two-finger swipe quick settings.

    • Moshe Brevda

It DOES break root, although if your using CWR it will prompt you to keep root (and prevent recovery from being overwritten)

      • TylerChappell

This is correct ^^ I did it one way on my 16GB and the other way on my 32GB.

        • http://profiles.google.com/marcusleejh Marcus Lee

Which two ways do you mean?

          • TylerChappell

I was really anxious so I didnt read and I skipped the whole part about keeping root while still in CWM, but on my 16GB I clicked it.

  • Bobbe

Great! do we need to wipe data in order to update?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

No, data has no effect on the update - it only updates system and boot.

    • telveer

      Not required.

  • Tom Mado

Nova Launcher's dock doesn't seem to be working. :( Reverting back to stock launcher now. It seems I still retain my root.

Guess now we have to wait for Teslacoil to update the app

    • scuttlefield

I just had the same problem. I contacted the dev. All you need to do is go into settings>check for updates>menu>beta . That fixed it for me.

      • http://www.facebook.com/matthew.sleebos Matthew Sleebos

        Thanks fixed it for me!

  • scuttlefield

I don't seem to have pinch-to-zoom in gmail. Anyone else having this problem? Note: I did download the 4.2 Gmail when it was available here on AP. I tried restoring the old version I'd saved as a backup in my system file but that didn't seem to help. The "about" screen shows that it Gmail 4.1.2. Any thoughts?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Just checked my N7 - shows 4.2 and has a setting to enable zooming and auto-fit you have to check first.

      • scuttlefield

Thanks Artem. Unfortunately, I seem to have messed up all versions of gmail I have on my N7. None of them will install and not even the Play Store version will work. If you have any ideas I'd be very grateful.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Root, uninstall Gmail using TB. Install the stock version corresponding to your ROM to /system/app, apply update.

I think you can also just flash the factory image which will just reflash /system without touching /data, but I'm not 100% on that.

          • scuttlefield

Got it...for whatever reason, I could only install Gmail 4.1.2 from the play store and it didn't seem to want to update. However, I still had the 4.2 apk that I got from AP when released on the site and that seems to work fine. I'm assuming that's a legit copy to have and that it will update okay when updates come along?

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

The leaked 4.2 apk won't update via the Play Store once that update is released, you'll have to uninstall it.

          • scuttlefield

Thanks. I guess I'll assume the Play Store version will update itself eventually.

    • http://www.facebook.com/nantapong.p Nantapong Pantaweesak

For getting the pinch-to-zoom in gmail 4.2 You've got to apply checkbox for auto fit message in general setting. But the zooming size is not the thing could call" zoom"

  • Zhivko

My Nexus 7 is not rooted, did I lose all information if i updated with the adb method?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      No, you lose nothing.

  • aghnaar

Can't apply the update with CMW, i keep getting the error :

    "assert failed : apply_patch_check ("/system/build.prop" [...])

    E: Error in /sdcard/Roms/094f6629314a.signed-nakasi-JOP40C-from-JZO54K.094f6629.zip (status 7)

I checked the md5 sum on the file and there don't seem to be a problem with the file

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Then it's something with your base ROM.

    • aghnaar

Think I found where the problem is, I flashed the modded file to have 720p recording.

      • Kobe Shapira

So what is the resolution for this?

        • http://weblogit.net/category/kolumne/ Tom

i guess you will have to replace the build.prop with the original file from the stock rom, at its least.

          • Kobe Shapira

I don't have the original files.
Was anyone able to recover this error?

          • http://weblogit.net/category/kolumne/ Tom

I went back to the Stock ROM after creating a Titanium Backup of my current setup. That did the trick, of course you could try and extract the contents of the Stock ROM and replace things by hand I guess.

          • Kobe Shapira

The original media_profiles.xml can be found here

            http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1745781&page=8

          • Ilkin Jamalli

I would suggest this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34116746&postcount=10 as above one did not help me.

          • heat361

Go into system/etc/ scroll down to media_profiles.xml you should also have one under it that says media_profiles.XML.back this is the backup of the original. Delete media_profiles.xml and delete the name .bak in the backup one. This will restore your original.

Then flash the 4.2 update that should work

      • http://www.facebook.com/matthew.sleebos Matthew Sleebos

Thnx worked for me, got the same flashed successful now. If anyone wants: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/9276539/media_profiles.xml my backup for the camera settings.

    • Ioan Szucs

I have the same problem ....

    • Michael CoZ

I have an issue as well. I think it's because of the "new" 4.2 keyboard that I put on the device. Trying to find instructions on how to place the original keyboard back on.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/no6969el Noel Barcellos

If you have any of the stock apps removed then it will not work. You have to have every app that came with stock image.

    • telveer

Best way is to install the full OS (over-write) - its available for download as a .tgz file. If you want to upgrade, remove/add apps that are part of stock - they try the upgrade zip file.

    • Islam Eldabaa

yah, i had it just restore any editing you did in system files. mine was editing that bugmailer.sh bug.

  • Gareth

Brillint. Many thanks. Followed your instructions & Voila! 4.2. Many thanks.

  • Chris

Doesn't work. Drivers installed, sdk installed, booted into recovery, install from adb. Running the adb sideload command on my PC just brings up adb help and does nothing to the device. Can't make the command work. I give up.

    • Jeremy Carlton

Make sure you have the most current adb version. They just added sideload with the 4.1.2 package. Also the other thing I did that worked is I put the zip in the same folder as adb. Should have worked from anywhere but it didn't. So messing around and that worked. Try that before you give up.

    • Darren Hylands

      I've got the same problem.

    • Ryan Socio

      Same problem :(

    • therealduckie

maybe someone can offer a download of the new adb for those of us that do not wish to download the entire SDK?

    • http://twitter.com/jhmartin JorMar

Here's how I got it to work, was having same problem as you guys:

Did the simpler guide link, put all those in my C:/Android folder, but the adp file there is old, it doesnt have sideload, so then downloaded the full android sdk, found the adp files in that and copied all files in the folder adp was in and pasted them in the other Android folder I made directly on the C drive earlier, replacing all old ones. Then I moved the zip file of the update to that folder too. Then I shift right clicked in that android folder and selected open command prompt here. THEN typing in the adp sideload command worked. Goodluck.

      • z0rch

I'm at the point where I downloaded the 4.1.2 package too, and can't find an updated adb with sideload. I'm kinda new to this, but am trying.

        • Sorian

You need to be in the folder that you downloaded the 4.2 zip file, I was beating my head till I tried that from QBKing77's video.

        • http://twitter.com/jhmartin JorMar

I got the new adp files from the full android sdk under tools when the manager runs, I downloaded sdk tools (already part of package) and sdk platform tools. I didn't mess with any of the versions below in the manager.

      • ichbinich

thanks a lot dude! After couple of hours trying and almost giving up, then I followed all your tips, and kaboom... it works!

        p/s: Never ever give up.

    • Pat

Make sure the ADB driver is in use in Windows Device Manager when you select Apply Update from ADB.. if not, this won't work. If it's not you need to right click and click update Driver, browse for my own, select from list already installed and select the ADB driver from the list.. Once that is selected and configured.. type "adb devices" and see if your device is listed. Then go ahead with the install.

  • Laurence

Can anyone confirm whether it has multi-user support?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      It does.

      • Laurence

        Yay! Thanks.

  • Benedikt

    Can't flashed because 4.2 Kayboard MD5 dosn't match the expected :(

  • sOFrOsTy

Why doesn't this work for me? When I get to the screen with the Android and red exclamation point, I press power and vol up together and nothing happens, it just reboots the device. How do I even get into the recovery screen?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Don't hold them too long. Just try tapping a bunch of times.

  • ChainsawCharlie

Sorry if this is a daft question. Does this mean that N7 get the Photosphere thingie as well?

    • TylerChappell

If you have the MoDaCo Camera launcher installed and try to use Photosphere, it will say "Sorry, your device is not yet supported. Model: Nexus 7 (asus)"

      • disparkys

and even if you change the build.prop to say that you have a Nexus device, it will then say, "Sorry you don't have a back camera". So I'm going on a limp there to say no.

        • Catnapwat

          Limb. Not limp.

  • Glenn

Just bought an ex-display 16GB (only AU$200!)and I already rooted it an flashed AOKP M1. Tempted to wipe again for 4.2 but I think I'll wait for AOSP to drop the source.

  • disparkys

I'd love to see photosphere even with the full frontal camera

    • Jeremy Carlton

Photosphere doesn't work. Says Nexus 7 doesn't support it. Boo!

  • gregory murphy

Failed browser check does not match. Must be that I installed old stock browser with flash?

  • dennis

I rebooted into CWR and chose install zip from sdcard. Found the 4.2 zip and clicked install but it fails with status 7. I have custom kernel but stock ROM with root. Any ideas? Will I need to flags back to stock?

    • KreeTerry

Same problem here. Stick rooted with Franco kernel. Gonna trouble shoot during my sociology class in about an hour. Any one know if you can flash just the stock kernel

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1503310639 Kree Terry

Just thought id share my fix. Downloaded the stock 4.1.2 files from google and extracted the zip containing the system, boot, recovery, and userdata images. wiped the boot.img in fastboot and flashed the one from that zip. rebooted into recovery and flashed the update. everything booted fine, lost root but all apps are fine. just a warning to others it looks like 4.2 is handling the sdcard differently than previous version.

  • mmmm

Anyone noticed if the stickMount stopped working? I tried other OTG mounting as well. But they all seems to be not working.

    • MHSB

      Your root permissions are gone!
You have to root your device again to use StickMount. Same happened to me after 4.1.2.

    • Rob

I've got this problem too. Stickmount comes up saying its mounted the drive and there's a folder there but it's empty. Tried a few sticks all the same and I've got root ok as Titanium works fine and I've installed busybox. Tried a few other OTG apps all the same they mount but only an empty folder appears

  • Doc!!!

how do you do this from ubuntu?

  • Zak

hey guys is it harmful or should i say disadvantages to installing an update manually in the long run?
    thanks

    • Max

no, it works exactly the same as an ota update

  • dbark

If you get "error: device not found" when doing "adb sideload" on Windows, grab the Nexus 7 (Google OEM) usb drivers for adb, and follow this guide http://blog.dantup.com/2012/10/fixing-adb-device-not-found-with-nexus-7-in-recovery-mode to get Windows to recognise the driver (USB VID:18d1 PID:0001)

    • R3

Windows still doesn't recognize the device.. There is a brief detection as "Android Bootloader Interface" in the initial recovery menu. After entering the Apply from ADB mode, Windows re-detects the tablet and changes it to "Nexus" (not installed Code 28) under "Other Devices".

  • http://www.facebook.com/sp00nard Christian Dixon

Why do they make it so you have to go through all that shit if you don't want to wait for an OTA update? Why can't you just download it and run it like an app and it updates???

    • http://twitter.com/SvenDaWhoop Sky Sailor

You can always root and flash a recovery, flashing the zip is really easy.

    • Eric Jones

The easy method for getting an update is to wait for the OTA. If you aren't patient enough for them to stagger the update, then you have some options. The options are actually pretty easy too, especially in comparison to many other devices. The question for you is, is it easier to be patient, or easier to follow the simple instructions above?

      • http://www.facebook.com/rebecca.wilmeth Rebecca Wilmeth

The instructions are easy for nerds. That guide looks completely foreign to through and though stock users. My eyes glazed over when it mentioned a command line.

        • Eric Jones

Then it's easier for you to wait a little bit for the OTA. ;-)

        • Carl

You might just be a helpless dumb-shit

  • Toko

I'm stuck at at step 3 so i decided to not update my N7 now, how can i reboot/shut down my device?!

  • bobbe

If I update through CWR how can i keep root?

    • tookieboy

either use ota rootkeeper (which others have suggested, but i didn't use it prior to losing root) or just root using the nexus 7 toolkit. choose root + install superuser (or supersu) via CWM. just plainly choosing root your phone didn't work for me, but flashing it did

really sorry man, you should've called me

  • Liquidretro

Looks to be lots of problems. I think I lost root in my last manual update to 4.1.2 Any idea how to get it back?

  • Nick

The fastest way to do this, is to download the Nexus 7 toolkit. Run it and have it install the drivers for you. Then instead of running the command adb sideload (package), go into your toolkit folder and run 'adb-toolkit sideload (package). Ive found only the toolkit version of the ADB deamon works properly for installing the drivers and for pushing the update. Using the toolkit will also fix the issue of your device saying HOST instead of SIDELOAD in your adb devices.

  • http://twitter.com/mattgoldey Matt Goldey

Any word on when the OTA update will be available? The Nexus 4 & 10 is supposed to be available at 9am PST, is it reasonable to presume that the 4.2 OTA update will come down then?

I get this same error. Any advice on this?

I had this too on Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit. I solved it like this.

      sudo adb kill-server
      sudo adb start-server
      sudo adb sideload ~/094f6629314a.signed-nakasi-JOP40C-from-JZO54K.094f6629.zip

If you are having the problems on Windows or Mac the only thing I can think is to make sure you are running it as admin.

      • Gary Patrowicz

        this worked for me ty

  • Dinofan01

If you're on a custom ROM (paranoid) can you just simply flash this over or do I have to revert back to stock ROM or stock recovery? thanks!

  • capehfx2

It says device not found, running windows 8, with the simpler guide portion. It use to work!

  • Brad Garrison

The command simply results in the syntax menu for the adb command being displayed. I've already modified the .inf file to be sure the device is recognized in recovery mode, but still no luck.
    Any suggestion?

    • Brad Garrison

Fixed it by installing the Android SDK files and running adb sideload from the command line. With the simple guide adb, "adb devices" resulted in the device ID followed by host whereas running "adb devices" from the SDK set results in device ID followed by sideload.

  • StK

The "simple guide" to get only adb/fastboot provides an older version of adb which does not support sideload... 1 hours of search and reinstalling driver but in fact it's just this howto that is buggy. Use the adb from the official sdk it works better...

  • http://www.totaltab.com Nick Reuter

OTA in Ontario Canada just now... 20:00 13-11-12

You'd be well advised to update the tutorial to mention that we hold VOL+ & Power **MOMENTARILY** - your badly explained guide wasted 15 mins of my time. Thanks :)

Got this a few hours ago - figured out the manual steps because some of the online steps did not match my setup: Install Android SDK, Install Nexus 7 USB drivers - I actually used Samsung drivers which work with Windows 8, download the zip file and adb sideload the zip. Overall, its very stable and slick. Support for multiple users is a welcome feature. Uninstalled Swype, now that the built-in keyboard has matured enough to become the default keyboard. Nexus 7 Camera does not support Photo Sphere (tested using Nexus 7 Camera app from Market Place).

The correct command is: adb -d sideload 094f6629314a.signed-nakasi-JOP40C-from-JZO54K.094f6629.zip

The -d forces the command to the USB port eliminating the "device not found" error

Once I enter command in step 3 a bunch of info loads down in command prompt and nothing happens??? Please help me!!!

I did not get the prompts to update and I kept trying. I force stopped my google services framework and then hit update. This did not work. I tried a half a dozen times. Then what I did to make it update OTA was the same thing, then I turned off the device. When I turned it back on, it started updating OTA.

  • Jason84134

It wont let me do it... it tells me it cant load side load and wont do it. then i remove sideload and it goes through everything but then my nexus 7 does nothing

  • Code0110

Alright I think I fixed the sideload thing for a lot of people, when it said 'Sideload' not found it the file you are sideloading MUST be in the same folder as adb, hope this helps a lot of you.

NO NEED TO DO IT SO COMPLICATED GUYS here
    1. Go to Settings -> Apps -> All

    2. Find Google Services Framework.

    3. Tap on Force Stop.

    4. Select Clear Data.

    5. Head back to the Nexus 7’s Settings, go to About, and check for a System Update.

    6. If it didn't find update, just repeat everything from 1. ( I've got the update on 5th repetition, friends on 3rd and 8th=)

Thank you a lot. It works!!! Without any flashing and manually update.

and also guys, you might encounter Play Store error on downloading stuff, just RE-ADD your account, meaning remove and add back straight ahead not leaving settings.

Fifth try for me and now I get to enjoy some 4.2 love! I tried this twice and thought they fixed this loophole before I saw your post.

gmail pinch zoom is not updated... any ideas?

  • Web-Wench

When I press VolUp and Pwr once I see the exclamation, nothing happens. I've tried a few times. Any thoughts?

  • Sorian

I love the new clock and how it integrates with the lock screen. When the alarm goes off, you can swipe left to snooze and right to disable, the glow ring flashes, and the time is displayed. In ICS, it was a popup window and buttons for disable and snooze.

  • sam3971

It could not be easier. Just flashed exactly as said using ADB and it worked like a charm the first time. Anyone having issues with ADB you have to have the downloaded firmware file in the same directory as ADB before running the command or it won't know where to look lol.

can somebody walk me through step 3, im really confused

  • http://twitter.com/Xeratun Xeratun

I tried installing the Android SDK following the steps on their website, but it says "This app can't run on your PC." Any chance this doesn't run on Windows 8? If so, is there a way to work around that? Or another app which does work for Windows 8?

I just got pushed the 4.2 update here in sweden.... On my aussie nexus 7

This doesnt work for me. After getting the update normally during the progress bar updating it fails at about 1/3 of the way through. Tried it this way and instead of getting an Android with a red exclamation point (section 2) i get Google like in loading and its stuck there.
