Stranger's Wrath HD Review: The Good, the Better, and the Broken

(Vita)

The strongest entry in the Oddworld universe ages well, despite one major design flaw.

spot

I honestly have no idea how I continually missed out on Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath over the past decade. Despite recommendations from friends and colleagues, I never managed to sit down and give it my full attention. Being a huge fan of all manner of westerns, I was promised that I'd love it. I was aware of the oft-cited twist that it held, but knew nothing of the specifics. Lucky for me, having Stranger's Wrath HD (yes, technically it's not really HD) ported to the Vita right before I embarked on a two week vacation provided the fortuitous series of events necessary for me to finally discover just who this Stranger was, and why he was so damn wrathful. After barreling through the adventure in a manner of days, I'm glad to report that this trip into Oddworld ages quite well, save for one huge design flaw courtesy of the Vita's most unnecessary functionality.

You play as The Stranger, a bounty hunter who roams the world collecting blood money in order to pay for an unknown operation. The basic structure plays out in a similar vein as GTA III, in which you visit larger towns, accept a mission, then venture forth to find and capture your bounty. While there's nothing new about this general structure, it's in Oddworld's action where its originality shines. With a tap the Vita's front screen, you'll transition your view from 3rd-person exploration to 1st-person combat. Your weapon throughout the adventure is always a crossbow, but it's your ammunition that makes all of the difference. The world is quite literally crawling with a variety of living creatures that you hunt, collect, and eventually fire at your enemies -- spiders lasso your unsuspecting victims, while a barrage of bees turn you into a gatling gun-wielding Stranger With No Name.

Aside from foraging for your munitions, strategy blossoms through the fact that you bounties are worth more alive than dead. The easy thing to do is go in guns a' blazing, inevitably leaving no man standing. But this will cost you quite a bit of money, so savvy bounty hunters might decide to methodically capture enemies alive one-by-one. With this mindset, each major encounter plays out with its own unique dynamics complete with various forms of cover, stealthy take-downs, destructible environments, and a slew of individual tactics unique to each ammunition type. Stranger's Wrath contains a series of smart, creative systems that were revolutionary in 2005, and still hold up impeccably an entire generation later. The ability to put your Vita to sleep whenever you desire breaks up the action into small chunks, making it a fantastic handheld experience. Each mission lasts roughly 10-15 minutes, allowing you to easily knock off a bounty or two on public transportation without having to worry about finding a save point.

wrath

All of this culminates into a polished, exciting experience that deserves to be played by any gamer who missed it like I did. So then why was I so damn frustrated throughout my entire time with Stranger's Wrath? Well, for that, we can thank the Vita itself, or more specifically, the rear touch functionality that cannot be disabled and was actively against the idea of allowing me to play the game without having to deal with a completely broken feature. When in first-person mode, which is over 50% of the game, the slightest graze of the Vita's rear pad results in the Stranger performing a melee attack, immediately disrupting anything you're currently doing. I can't count the number of times I had a sniper shot lined up, only to begin flailing my fists the moment before I could pull the trigger.

Anyone who's held a Vita knows that the rear touch screen occupies a hell of a lot of the handheld's real estate. Thus, anyone with hands larger than a toddler's is bound to have their digits occasionally venture into this space. Or in my case, you'll be accidentally punching the air a few times per minute, which will undoubtedly lead to a whole slew of deaths that aren't your fault, but rather the fault of the game for not allowing you to remap these controls or to turn off the rear touch entirely. I looked online to see if I was alone in my concerns, but sure enough, dozens of threads exist with similar complaints. The only solution I found was "buy a third party add-on that increases the size of the Vita," which is pretty much the most asinine solution imaginable.

I realize that I just spend two full paragraphs moaning about a single design decision, but it's honestly the lone blight in an otherwise fantastic package. Stranger's Wrath presents a world that bleeds atmosphere, and fans of westerns from Sergio Leone to Red Dead Redemption are going to love exploring Lorne Lanning's vision. Marry this with a brilliant idea to make ammunition a part of the game's mechanics as well as narrative, and you're left with a fantastic adventure that never outstays its welcome. Aside from that single glaring design flaw, the Vita is a fantastic venue to (re)experience one of the truly under-appreciated gems of the original Xbox.

Update: We've been informed that an update is in the works that completely removes rear touch functionality from the game, which should fix the major problem I had during the review. The patch should be live at some point later on in the month. Thanks to Oddworld Inhabitants' Stewart Gilray for the heads up.

  • You just keep one fingure on the back at all times

Its really not that difficult!! Certainly calling itgame breaking with such a simple fix (your hands are there normally anyway....!) is not quite right.

    Its a fun game!

I think it was that while walking around the inventory kept coming up.  I only played it on the Vita for 10 minutes because of it.

      Hi,

The inventory screen only comes up if you press the "SELECT" button. If you hold a finger on the touchscreen you get the pause menu.

  • Patch this month?

I'll believe it when I see it. Go to the Steam forums and see how many months and how many times the patch for the pc version of Oddworld HD was pushed back. I stopped believing Gilray a long time ago.

Umm, we updated Stranger's Wrath PC to the HD version with a sh!t tonne of new features months ago.

It now works on, I believe, all PC hardware now.

If you're not satisfied then I'm sorry for that, but even people over at GAF are happy with what we've done with the HD version of this title on all platforms.

      Have a good one.

  • Loved this game when it came out for the Xbox

Then again, if Oddworld Inhabitants has anything to do with a game, I'll buy it. I already bought the PSN version of Stranger's Wrath and will probably pick up Munch's Oddyssee on PSN even though I have that for my Xbox as well.

Why do I do it? I want to see more new games from OI that's why?

Munch is the only Oddworld game that I haven't played. What do you think, worth picking it up on PSN?

  • Rear touch pad...

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  Xocolatl

Has any game put the rear touch pad to good use? Or for that matter, can you think of a good one? I could really see it being used in a mech sim games to give additional control (like say, turn torso, etc), or maybe map control in driving/piloting games. Maybe slide open menus in adventure games, or things like that. But I can't imagine it being good for any sort of "action" stuff.

I though rear touch worked pretty well in LittleBigPlanet. Although the problem still existed of accidently touching it and having your game wonk up for a few seconds before you realize what the problem was.

EA are NOT the publisher of the PS3, VITA or PC versions of this title, "Oddworld Inhabitants, Inc." are.

  • Rear Touch control in Stranger.

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  StewartGilray

    Hey everyone,

Thanks for the review, and we've already had the rear touch pad stuff mentioned a few times, as such we're working on an update that will add an alternate control layout that has NO rear touch pad input at all.

This should be out by the end of January.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, and I'm really glad to hear that an update is on the way. Like I said, I really loved my time with the Stranger, and with a rear touch fix, this is certainly one of my favorite experiences on the Vita.

beause I was considering getting this game soon.  Hearing about the rear touch has changed my mind though.  I hate that thing.  Most of the time I play my Vita while I'm lying down.  The system is so skinny that you have to have a good hold of it to keep from it slipping out of your hands, and that can't be done with any comfort without having your hands on the rear pad.  It really sucks that you can't switch this because I was looking forward to Oddworld.

    Thanks for the heads up.

    • McBiggitty
    • Yep...

You can't help but graze the back pad on a regular basis. But as it was mentioned above, a patch should be out this month to fix it. With that one flaw gone, Stranger's Wrath is absolutely worth picking up on the Vita.

of a game that (not trolling) makes GOOD use of (not trolling) the rear touch screen? As a person whose fingers touch when playing his 3DS, I've wondered if the Vita games would have worked just as well by using the front screen and some sort of "alt" key. Just a thought.

Frobisher Says! is the only one that comes to mind. I really love my Vita, but yeah, shoehorning rear touch on every game is a HUGE misstep on Sony's part.

The major design flaw you were going to mention was the fact that you lose all your abilities in the last quarter of the game. This shift brought a great plot twist to the table at the cost of everything you earned throughout the game. A very poor decision in a game designed around building your character.

Of course, it's possible they fixed this and I'm not aware.

    • McBiggitty
    • Nope...

      Posted: 01/07/2013 by  McBiggitty

That's still a major part of the game's third act. Honestly, I don't mind it so much -- I think it works well in terms of the narrative. That being said, I do agree that it's strange to have the player build The Stranger up, only to have most of his abilities taken away. Kinda like leveling up Aeris in FFVII, not knowing that she's going to be taking a dip halfway through...

Even though that part makes me feel a little cheated, I still had a great time with the game prior to the shift. It's about the trip not the destination, as they say.
