Biohazard 2 Original Soundtrack

The hugely popular best-seller Resident Evil (Biohazard in Japan) is perhaps the freakiest games to terrorize the Playstation. What really adds to the frightful experience of the game is the eerie, creepy music. Just as with the first Resident Evil, the music here in the sequel is some of the best for the Playstation.

The CD comes by Capcom's new "Suleputer" label and has a really cool cover. The first track is just so very cinematic - this is really movie-quality music folks. There are three other tracks from FMV cutscenes in the game which seem like they are either from a John Carpenter movie or big-name Hollywood action film. The prologue sets an eerie tone with piano, drums, and other great touches of percussion. The "floor and hall tracks" are all very tense but safe in the same way. "Secure Place" and "The Library" set the tone with some great piano that is settling but in a very strange, sick way. Also included is some great "fight music" in tracks 16 and 17. What really stands out though are tracks 21, 28, and 29, which take the cake for some of the best boss music ever heard. Tracks 28 and 29 have a chorus, which adds so much to the already pounding music. To top this off is the kick-a$$ credit line track (track 5), which has no Japanese vocal (as in the first) but some really kickin' electric guitar that is even better than the first Biohazard credit roll song, in my opinion. I'll admit it, just as the game scared the crap out of me, the CD does the same with its unpredictable, catchy, dark, and sometimes twisted tracks. Every track is worth listening to. The only complaint I have is that the FMV cutscene tracks could have had the voice from the game in it, preferably on a separate track.

Overall, this soundtrack is a must-buy for people who love Resident Evil and/or horror movies. If you want to start off on the right track when it comes to game music, just pick this CD up as soon as possible. Shut the lights off, load your shotgun, and "enter the world of survival horror."

One of the coolest games in videogame history finally gets its own soundtrack! One of Resident Evil 2's best elements is the background music. While some of the music is not as creepy as in the first game, in substitute there are tracks like "Escape from Laboratory" that sound very adventurous.

"The Second Malformation of 'G'" and "The Third Malformation of 'G'" are my personal favorites. While "The Second Malformation of 'G'" could've sounded a little scarier than it does, the music is still excellent and gives you the feeling of being in the game. "The Third Malformation of 'G'", which is the song for the final battle, has more of a horror feel to it, with opera-like instrumentation and a female vocalist screaming at the top of her lungs. It's actually quite amusing, but in a similar way to the "swishing" noises in the "Friday the 13th" movies.

"Hey, it's up to us to take out Umbrella", is the opening for "Credit Line of Whole Staff", possibly the stupidest name for such a cool song. This one stands out from the whole soundtrack, with its rock 'n roll feel. Although there are surprisingly no lyrics, it is still a masterpiece.

My only disappointment with this soundtrack is that not all songs are present on the CD. I was upset to find out that the S.T.A.R.S. Office theme didn't make the cut, nor did four or five other songs. It's a shame. Overall though, this is still one of the best game soundtracks I've heard so far.

I loved the music of the original Biohazard, and after fully immersing myself in the music of its sequel, Biohazard 2, I have to say that I'm somewhat disappointed. First of all, the music on the first Biohazard was actually scary! Ironically, the music on Biohazard 2 is more soothing than frightening. I could lay down and use it as relaxation music on most of the tracks, with the exception of "The First Floor", which has a very foreboding piano melody that gave me some chills.

The flavor of this soundtrack is very "movie-like". It sometimes tries to grab you with swift percussion sounds, but it didn't have much of an impact on me. I pay more attention to how catchy the melodies are than to the "excitement level", and sadly, the melodies aren't very noteworthy. In fact, the three "G" malformations threaten towards sounding cheesy.

I appreciate the opera-like vocals on the final malformation arrangement above anything else. And "Credit Line Of Whole Staff" is a rocking electric guitar piece that stands out on the disc. Overall though, Biohazard 2 OST is not a very good soundtrack compared to Capcom's previous efforts.
