Ubisoft: 'Good chance' Rainbow 6: Patriots is next-gen game

Publisher CEO Yves Guillemot confirms action game remains in development, says it could debut on Xbox 720, PlayStation 4.

Rainbow 6: Patriots remains in development at Ubisoft and could debut on next-generation platforms, according to company CEO Yves Guillemot. The executive told Polygon that the action game will "surprise the industry" when it does arrive. Rainbow 6: Patriots was announced for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in November 2011 with a 2013 release window attached.

Guillemot would not confirm if Rainbow 6: Patriots was in fact a next-generation game, but said, "There's a good chance it can be."

Next-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony are being readied for launch during the back half of 2013, according to analysts.

This follows news from March, when it was reported that restructuring at Ubisoft Montreal led to the removal of creative director David Sears, narrative director Richard Rouse III, lead designer Philippe Therien, and animation director Brent George from the Rainbow Six: Patriots development team. Ubisoft since confirmed that Sears is off the project and was replaced by new creative director Jean-Sebastien Decant.

Developed by Ubisoft Montreal with assistance from Ubisoft Toronto and Red Storm, Rainbow 6: Patriots will follow the counterterrorism Team Rainbow squad as it tries to put down a group of American insurgents known as the True Patriots. As players look to suppress the True Patriots' budding revolution, they will be faced with "tough ethical decisions," according to Ubisoft.

Rainbow Six: Patriots is the first entry in the franchise since 2008's Rainbow 6 Vegas 2. For more on the upcoming game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

I can't wait for the next gen so many good games are coming out!

A Rainbow Six game would actually surprise me if :

- it would be playable offline, without DRM, forced online mode or 3rd party launchers

- it would allow me to host my own multiplayer server to which people can connect directly, without the need of a "Lobby" service

- it would be a return to the features of the good old Rogue Spear (the hard difficulty, the combat features, the movement, actual magazine bullet tracking, plan and go, etc.)

- it would be a feature complete, bug free, quality tested release without DLC madness afterwards

.. but I assume it will fail all of that, because "next gen" (according to the big 3, EA, UbiSoft and Activision / Blizzard) is all about the big companies wanting control over customer behavior tracking, milking them with DLC, forcing online mode, releasing most accessible titles for all ages, abusing brand names to get more sales, put more effort into marketing than development, ... you get the idea.

If you want a challenging Rainbow Six Rogue Spear successor, you better look at smaller development studios or indies (or even modding communities) to provide one some day.

Prove me wrong, UbiSoft, but I think you won't.

 @bloody-hell

being abl eto create my own 'Server' is a key point for me, as i hate being at the mercy of developers knowing that they simply switch off their servers when it suits them (e.g. EA).  Being able to host your own servers simply ensures MP Longevity, hell i still play 'Vegas 1' on XBL and thats almost 7 years old : )

Oh, and one last thing, it had better retain the Classic MP maps such as LVU, Vault, Kill House and Streets : )

and who doesnt love a good old A&D; in the Calypso Casino : )

Hmm...  I've got a soft spot for Tom Clancy branded games, especially Rainbow Six.  I will buy this, that's a given, but I really hope it's as good as it's cracked up to be.  Ubi has released some truly great stuff, as well as some pretty crappy stuff.  I just want a good Rainbow Six game.

Well, i gotta say that i did actually expect this announcement.

My only hope is that it keeps to its roots, i love and still play 'Vegas 1' on XBL (as do many others) and would just love to see 'Patriots' sticking to the origonal formula that made the original such a brilliant game.

Oh, and i hope that 'Patriots' retains the PEC system, 1st & 3rd Person Cover System, and not the system adopted by GR: Future Soldier.

This would make a great launch title for Xbox 720 and Playstation 4. With the Xbox 720 due in November 17th 2013? There has to be decent games available for launch. Rainbow 6 Patriots could be one of them. Ubisoft has 1 year to ready this game for fall 2013.

early to talk about next gen

SanjuroGT

its still too early for another next gen console the PS3 still has a ton of potential while the xbox360 has already reached its peak because it came out one yr earlier than the ps3 did.

@SanjuroGT New consoles don't come out when the technology improves - they come out when the brand retention begins to slip.

What this really means is.... Rainbow Six Patriots will be ported to next-gen systems to take advantage of launch sales and a lack of competition in the new consoles library. I've seen enough conso;e launches ton know that true next generation gaming doesn't really start until at least one or two years into it's life cycle. Especially with the last couple of console launches.

Sevenizz
Sevenizz

@LordelX I thought the exact same thing.  Burnout 4, Splinter Cell Double Agent, CoD 2, Battlefield 2, and King Kong are a few titles that come to mind that were released on last gen and this gen around launch.

This game was announced and teased a long time ago.  It should be released this gen.  No amount of next-gen graphics would make it that much better.  Now, if they recently teased this game like "Watch Dogs" then I would understand why they will be taking it to next-gen.  It's like Splinter Cell Conviction all over again, with the teasing of how it would be a different Splinter Cell game and then they canned all the great concept and ideas and settled for an average third-person, cover-shooter, stealth game.

I'm just not buying it.

I'm having trouble giving a damn. Ubisoft has turned the whole Tom Clancy stable into something quite awful.

Sounds like they mean a multi-gen release, like what they did with SC : Double Agent. Regardless, this is one way the can get me on board for at least one of the next consoles, I've been following this game for so long now

SavoyPrime

I'd be fine with this. I just want the game to release. I've never been interested in a Rainbow 6 game. But the Game Informer cover story had me REALLY interested in this installment.

Old_Schooler_Dan

And I see they swept aside the original development team. That is really bad news. It was David Sears' vision of the game in the article first covering it in Game Informer that got me really stoked up, and now he's gone? I'm wondering if this is even going to be the same game it was intended to be by the time it comes out. -_-

Elann2008
Elann2008

 @Old_Schooler_Dan

My thoughts exactly.  I have no doubt Sears vision will be gone, and this will turn out into Splinter Cell Conviction development woes all over again.  Great vision turned into a dumbed down, average game.

Whilst Vegas 1 & 2 were entertaining, nothing touches the tenseness of Raven Shield and Rogue Spear, checking a doorway in those two could seriously make me more tense than most survival horrors ever have.

Good.

I know some people want to play as soon as possible, but it could offer so much more on next gen.

No, not just graphics, but better, more elaborate mechanics, less obnoxious loading times, could possibly even be longer.

I love the Rainbow Six series so this makes me happy, I'll wait paciently.

Like most others I'm hoping this is a true R6 title like the ones that were more tactical than "FPS."

I'm betting the new Splinter Cell may be an indication of what to expect.  If they let Splinter Cell fall yet again in terms of strategy and tactics and the unforgiving "you've been spotted - COMPLETE FAILURE" nature of the design... R6 will be arcadey again.

I'd like to think it'll have more of an influence of the new Ghost Recon in terms of some genuine thought going into improving the franchise's core mechanics.

msfan1289
msfan1289

@eriktkire come on look at the video of the R6 preview they show a year ago, no way its even close to the original Rainbow Six games.

eriktkire
eriktkire

@msfan1289 even though it's possible that could change... in theory that is... I have no doubt about it not being close to the originals like you say.

But will it be closer to that or even more arcadey than it's already gotten?  All signs point to arcade but for R6 I'd like to think it's at least a vague possibility.  You know, that inner desire to see it be a real game again.

Or if one of the original developers of the original R6's... if they did their own non-Clancy-franchised and skinned iteration of what they feel R6 should play like in 2013/14, that would be a game I'd be keen on getting into.

Pete5506

I wanna know what way they are going to go with the game.

Something like the original or are we going to see something that was out of Vegas.

Either Or, I'll most likely pick it up, always been a fan of the series.

If it's more like ravenshield i'll be happy. If it's more like the garbage pile of lockdown and vegas 1 and 2 i'll disown all clancy games. GRFS was almost enough to make me go there but i'll wait for this to make my final decision

Please...stop calling it the Xbox 720...it takes a couple more keystrokes, but just go with something like "next-gen Xbox"... If they eventually do call it the xbox 720, i dont care if it makes me look like an idiot, but for now...geez. seriously i can't stand that name...

SolidTy
SolidTy

@juliangui Sorry, that name is years old and used by the industry. Just got to get over it until the official name comes along. I've also used Durango and Xbox 3.

Last gen all I saw was articles on Xbox 2 and NextBox...but once the 360 had a name, those names died. The 720 name will die when it's got an official name as well.

dozer187

judging by the amount of time ubi delays all of its tom clancy games i would expect to see this game make in time just before the next next gen of consoles.......reason for delays: kinect features noone gives a flying fuck about

No offense, but If you really were an R6 fan you wouldn't be expecting another arcade R6 GAME...

richten71
richten71

@Payasoplas That's why I'm hoping the reason why we haven't seen any game play is because they are changing R6 back to what made it great in the first place. They saw that GRFS was a failure because it strayed away from what GRAW was built up to be. Gamers don't like it when developers screw with the formula that made their games successful in the first place. It's okay to improve on it, but not completely change it.

parrot_of_adun

@Old_Schooler_Dan "It's okay to improve on it, but not completely change it."

You seem to have ignored that part. I'd agree, honestly. If someone wants to try something *completely* different, they shouldn't be making a sequel.
