PS4 controller to include LCD touch-screen, biometric sensors?

Source says Sony could replace long-running DualShock controller with an all-new pad for next-generation console.

The PlayStation 4 could introduce a new controller, pushing the longstanding and iconic DualShock input to the background. A "senior games studio" source speaking to CVG claims Sony's research and development department has been busy testing numerous controller designs for the still-unannounced next-generation machine. One such design includes an LCD touch-screen and biometric sensors on its grips.

Biometrics technology is capable of reading data from a gamer's body, including heart rate and temperature, among other things. Half-Life and Portal studio Valve is also experimenting with the technology.

This information is backed up by other sources who told Eurogamer that Sony has been testing a PS4 controller with a touch-screen and biometrics functionality for as long as six months. The designs reportedly change every month.

The DualShock controller was introduced with the original PlayStation in 1997 and a version of the pad has been used in every PlayStation console since. It is not clear if the DualShock will be replaced entirely by a new controller or if the PS4 will be compatible with older inputs, similar to the way Wii Remotes work with the Wii U.

Sony is reportedly gearing up to announce the PS4 at an Apple-style media conference at the end of March.

Sony has copied Nintendo before in controllers. This is not much of a surprise.

Sony, you made this mistake with the PS3, just give us the DualShock controller this time.

I want a DualShock for the next 10 console generations if Sony makes it that far

Dual Shock controller is good if you are still young and have small hands. Once you grow up, Xbox 360's controller is more comfortable and the analog sticks have more natural feedback/resistance. They should make the PS4 controller much larger in size but allow BC with PS3's controller, giving people choices for a small or larger controller.

@BestJinjo

If they fix the directional buttons (they have NOT done it yet), I'm absolutely OK with that. 360?s controllers are very comfortable and practical.

NO! DON'T! PLEASE DON'T!

Pleaaaaase don't get dragged into this BS. Just fix the imprecise L2, R2 and make the battery removable (so that we don't have to plug it while playing) and the Dual Shock would be perfect. Please...don't ruin this Sony! Have a minimum of self confidence and personality, pretty please!!!

@BigB-65 What's wrong with just plugging it in while you're not playing? I usually just plug it into the router when it needs a bit of charge.

@JimmeyBurrows

Nothing's wrong when you are NOT playing but it's a real pain when the battery dies while playing. The cord is such a hassle.

Think this is true?

PS4 Tech Specs
  • An APU with a fast GPU.
  • 4GB of DDR3 RAM.
  • 4GB of GDDR5 RAM.
  • CPU is an x86 system with 256-bit bus.
  • A more off the shelf design than the modded Xbox 720. "We all feel Omni is more of a pc in it design."
  • Capable of 3.2TFlops of data.
Xbox 720 Tech Specs
  • Three SOCs in one console. Two "Venus" models, and one "Mars".
  • 8GB RAM, with 1GB devoted to operating system.

Mars SOC - System SOC

  • GPU AMD 8850 spec GPU clocked at 600mhz
  • 4 core CPU is clocked @ 1.8GHz. It is an x86 system.

@nhlcrazy 100%% fake.

DDR4 - doubtful as no modern CPU platforms support this and won't until 2014.

HD8900 GPU with 10000HD future tech? Ya ok. There is no such thing. If AMD had HD10000 tech ready, why would they hold it back on the PC for another 2-3 years? Also, based on how chips are designed, tech is designed in-line with the node. HD8000 is 28nm, HD9000 is 20nm, HD10000 ? You can't put HD10000 tech into HD8000 series....

About time Sony tried something new instead of the same old rehashed N64 controller.

Also, minus 2D beat em ups, the Xbox pad beats Dual Shock hands down!

@wcwj26 I've always heard PS3 had the superior D-pad compared to the 360's.

I know the DualShock is too recycled but it's a very good design, I doubt their new controller will be better in terms of grip and appearance.

Lets hope they wont put screen to the new controlers....I dont want to have to look down while playing....But what i would prefer is a smooth, cool-looking controller (you could add some backlight...it will make it more badass) that will make my gaming experience a lot better

@netsurfer3210 Switching between screens is abit annoying at first but when you get the hang of it then you wonder how nobody else thought of it first.

gamerbassist95
gamerbassist95

@netsurfer3210 That was one of my worries for Wii U some games are like that but not all. Take AC III for example its just a map and HUD on the Wii U gamepad.

Screens on controllers always confuse me. At what point in the action of a game is there time to look down at your hands? If you could use the "controller screen" while using your main screen I could see this as fun. I am thinking in a senecio like a shooter, say you need night vision or heat sensing. Bring the controller screen up to eye level and let that act as your night/heat vision for the moment. A controller screen would be awesome for games like fallout and Batman were your character actually uses mini LCD devices(pip boy)(detective tools). If you are going to do it do it so it has some substance. Don't just do it because the world is now a touch screen.

gamerbassist95
gamerbassist95

@freesoulvw Not all games on WII U at least dont make you quickly look at two screens at once. Thats pointless and a headache, literally. This only works with ds/3ds nothing else. Games like batman would be great with scanners. But  a simple map and hud on the screen to take clutter off a tv would be great too.

So long as any new fancy-pants input methods aren't the ONLY input methods, and we're still allowed some good old DualShock button pressing, then I'm OK with this.

CraigNinten
CraigNinten like.author.displayName 1 Like

Fix the damn trigger buttons, that thing is so miserable, many shooter games even avoid using it by aim and shoot with R1/L1

JimmeyBurrows

@CraigNinten I've always used R1 for shooters anyway... So never had a problem with the triggers, work nicely in racing games as well.

ThePowerOfHAT
ThePowerOfHAT

About time.  The Dualshock is based off of such an old design; honestly, I hate the feel of the PS3 controllers.  It's feels too light, the thumbsticks seem loose, the triggers depress at an odd angle...  The only thing I really like much about is the D-pad, and even with that, pressing two at the same time doesn't work particularly well.  Definitely feel like it's time for Sony to try something new with the default controller.

Guys, it says they're testing "numerous" controller designs and that this was one of the designs they were testing. In other words, they are also testing other designs and nothing has been finalized that we know of. This means they could choose any as their final controller depending on whatever factors they decide meet their criteria.

Lol. People are already accusing Sony of stealing ideas, etc, etc, when nothing has even been confirmed, let alone announced. It just shows you how if you give gamers your finger, they'll take your whole arm and run with it. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

Wow, I'm a Sony fan but it seems as though they are copying Nintendo Wii u's game pad.  I guess my decision to trade in my ps3 for the Wii u was a good decision.  I just hope that Nintendo gets third party support.

I feel like Sony loves to talk about these gimmick things that never go anywhere.  The whole thing about controllers for PS3 having motion sensors went out the window quickly and really only stuck around to turn valves in KZ2/3.  The Move went nowhere, but that's more due to Sony not overly supporting it (yes, it has a ton of games, but that doesn't matter if the quality is only in a small handful of them).

I like the touch on my Vita, but that's because it is all in one unit.  I don't think it would be as easy to use on a controller, especially if it is used to show read outs or other important information, causing you to look away from the game and at the controller (actually, that may be interesting for a survival type game, forcing the player to choose when to look at their vital info and when to focus on staying alive in the game world, but that's an exception).

obsequies
obsequies

@blueboxdoctor I think its important to keep doors open, I like how they don't focus on the gimmicks, forcing devs and players to fling their hands all around but rather they are just add ons..I hope the new playstation controller doesn't deviate from what works well.

Revenant_Evil
Revenant_Evil

It's way too soon to put much into rumors and "leaks" that'll end up mostly being BS anyway. How about just waiting until Sony actually confirms anything about the next gen before people start jumping to conclusions.

translucent17
translucent17 like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

I have a wii U and I can see how the tablet controller can really open up some doors and change the direction of gaming...  but it can be a bit distracting when its not done right, what I mean is that if you have a game that has you constantly switching back and forth between looking at your tv and looking at the screen in your hands it can actually have a negative effect on the level of immersion.... biometric sensors sound interesting but that seems more like for shock value like hey check it out my controller has biometric sensors.... IMO all I want from a new console is Great graphics, Huge storage, Solid hardware. A large selection of software, And a decent price tag.

Metronoid
Metronoid

@translucent17 They made so well that they advanced the resistive touch, its almost like an capacitive, you zoom in and out with double clicks, Nintendo is the smartest company in Games. Theres the why they always copied her.

MirkoS77
MirkoS77

Biometric sensors? Yea, I can guess the use of this tech: link one controller to be usable by only that person. Want to play with a friend? Sorry, go buy a controller that works only for them. The sad thing is, as ridiculous as that sounds, considering the way the industry is headed I don't think this is out of the realm of possibility. Hell, they're in the process of linking software to one console, so why notits hardware?

mav_destroyer
mav_destroyer

Now why would I want to give out my biometeric data especially to a company whose network was recently hacked and compromised by a bunch of teenagers?

Really! Xbox has a rumored controller with an LCD and now Sony has one too!? No way! Impossible! I never would have seen that coming! They would never ever...ever take ideas from Nintendo! Because according to many of you Nintendo is for kids and lame. Why in the heck would Sony and Microsoft copy Nintendo? OMG! The gaming industry must be coming to an end!

@cubachino kids' market is big. although sony and microsoft should stay with hardcore. they should by no means neglect the kids. I'm totally cool with them trying to steal some kids from nintendo.
