Mafia III hitting PS4, Xbox 720 - Report

2K Czech gangster sequel reportedly originally intended to be next-gen launch title, but that has become "unlikely" due to need for additional staff.

Mafia III is currently in development at 2K Czech for the PlayStation 4 and next Xbox, according to a Eurogamer Czech report (translated by the author and posted to Eurogamer's English outlet).

According to the report, Mafia III was originally planned as a next-gen launch title, but this has become "unlikely," as 2K Czech is currently in the process of staffing up following the loss of 40 developers last year.

A 2K representative told GameSpot, "It is 2K's policy not to comment on rumours and speculation."

There are currently 13 open positions at 2K Czech, which include calls for artists, programmers, and various designers. According to the job listings, people chosen for these positions will work on the developer's "next AAA title."

2K Czech's most recent release was tennis simulator Top Spin 4, which launched in March 2011.

A report from earlier this year suggested that 2K Czech was assisting Rockstar North with development on Grand Theft Auto V. A Rockstar representative denied this claim, plainly stating that the two studios are not collaborating on anything.

The analyst consensus is that the next Xbox (recently confirmed by Microsoft) and the PS4 will be on store shelves for holiday 2013. As for their capabilities, GameStop CEO Paul Raines said last month that these consoles will provide "unbelievable new capabilities for rendering, speeds, et cetera."

Mafia 2 although good was a Major Disapointment. I just hope this one is better and that they don't rush it out.

Mafia 2 was so much less than it could have been and should have been, especially since the shooting was so satisfying.  I just wish there was more to do in that game.

I am playing Mafia II atm (I am actually alt tabbed out of the game, looking up help on a shoot out sequence!) and I gotta say, this game is amazing! The game looks amazing (not new obviously) and though the story is one we have all seen a hundred times, I love the characters and the setting anyway. I could keep going but you get it. Awesome game and I am very glad to hear it's third iteration  is coming along

They should remake mafia 1 with mafia 2 graphics.

Hope it's not half-baked and rushed out like Mafia 2 was. Just playing it, you could tell huge portions of the game were missing.. from the railway network to tons of plot holes.

So Mafia III is finally confirmed (PC gamer here so don't really care if it's on current gen or next gen consoles), I just can't believe it. Mafia II was incredibly close to perfection, all it needed was more side missions, more reasons for the player to explore the world and blind fire in the cover system and that's more than enough for me. Really hope they add those things in Mafia III. I also hope they complete Vito's story somehow because the end was very mysterious (hopefully in a cool way like they did with Tommy Angelo's).

Majkic666

@Gladiator_Sofi close to perfection?!? O_O have you ever played the first mafia game?? then you would know that mafia 2 is a good game but not as good as the first

Gladiator_Sofi
Gladiator_Sofi

@Majkic666 Actually I'm very proud to say that I have played the first Mafia (at least 5 times) and it really is better than Mafia II, but Mafia II did improve many things in the series and hopefully Mafia III will too.

Majkic666

@Gladiator_Sofi well then you would know that Mafia too is not even near perfection... its a good game but nothing special compared to the originally game

i BELIEVE this... expect the ps4 part! Mafia is one of the best IPs around and it goes to show that they're not burning this title down to the ground.

And here we go with another game that gives a bad image to video games in general. I say we just make two classes, one for video games, the other for gangster, murderer and criminal simulation training so that M games don't ruin what would otherwise be an enjoyable form of entertainment.

@tgwolf Let me guess you rather play games based on Spongebob Squarepants? lol

Also, put blind-fire in Mafia, please. Then the cover-based shooting system is complete.

@TheDarkSpot Right so that if your buddy gouges your eyes out in a fit of rage you can still play your mafia sim.

Mafia 2 has the best, most movie-like story I have ever seen in a game.

Majkic666

@TheDarkSpot well i am not recommending it.. i think it's crap, because of the many bugs it had on release date and that it is more a movie then a game...

just told you try it if you are more into movies then games

Hey, 2K - Next Gen is already here, it's called PC, you can dumb down the game later on to meet whatever outdated hardware the "next gen" consoles will have by then.

You better not screw it up again on your next title with copy protection that makes the game unplayable - After having paid for your product and the addons and then have it crashing due to your DRM I had to rely on a "scene release" which works flawlessly (as your release should have).

Please don't do that again, I want to pay for good games (which Mafia 1 and 2 were) but when your copy protection / piracy prevention breaks the game then my decision to buy one of your products again is diminished.

Take Mafia 2, remove the DRM, add more freeroam / open world aspects to it (extortion, smuggling, operating and protecting various franchises, multiple "families" running the city and its businesses and competing with each other, etc.) and your game will sell like candy.

But keep the DRM or worsen it or make it an MMO (which seems to be a trend currently) and I'll leave and never look back.

Who really cares? So a franchise may have a game for the next-gen. I got a news breaker right here, there will be a GTA, Halo, and a Call of Duty game for the new gen of gaming. It seems to me that this Eddie Makuch guy is behind a lot of these pointless articles here.

will bringing out the big times and parties ps4 create jobs ? 2k should have been working on mafia 3 for the ps3 , I don't think digital will save the world anytime soon ! it will just give us a better view of it falling apart !

While the second was drawn back by the fact it was an 'open world game' The story and gameplay were great! Running around and getting in the shootouts felt incredible. The weight of each bullet hitting an enemy was.... sickly enjoyable haha. Would love to see another Mafia game and hopefully it will have more open world elements. The series has alot of potential.

I remember the first game on the ps2... memories ;'). Mafia 2 was pretty fantastic  (Even though I couldnt play the last mission due to that glitch.. watched the last part on youtube.)

in enjoyed Mafia 2, I thought the story was great... only problem was that for an open world game there was barely anything to do except collect Playboy magazines and collect some cars for scrap.

Mafia II is one of those games I could easily go back and play multiple times. I don't really look forward to games' updates often, but I can't wait to hear more about this. Pre-order is a definite for me.

We could assume Star Wars 1313, Watch Dogs, will also be next-gen if Mafia III is going that route as well.  Mafia 2 had some nice set-pieces for fights but the game was completely dragged down by all the driving.  On top of that the game was very short and barely lived up to Mafia 1 which was a great game.

Damn. I was hoping we could get one more Mafia game before the end of this console gen.
