Three weeks.

That's how long until RIM officially launches its new BlackBerry 10 phones. One year ago, I explained why RIM had a long road to getting developers enthused enough to create apps for the new platform. The company has spent that year going down it, honing its developer message, offering $10,000 guarantees, posting insane videos to rally the troops, and launching zero BlackBerry 10...

Verizon, AT&T;, and T-Mobile all confirm they'll give BlackBerry 10 devices a chance

RIM's lost a lot of favor in the wireless industry over the last few years, and has a sizable hole to dig out of with BlackBerry 10. But it's going to get a chance to do so: Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T all confirmed to Reuters that they will offer BlackBerry 10 devices. From Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam's simple "we'll carry it" to T-Mobile chief John Legere's proclamation that "it's going to be a successful product," each made it clear than BlackBerry 10 will have a place on its shelves. Carriers have proclaimed support for BB10 before, of course, but this is a strong vote of confidence nonetheless.

It's hard to overstate how important that is to RIM's chances of succeeding with its upcoming operating system. Jon Rubenstein famously blamed Verizon-dictated release cycles for Palm's eventual demise, telling Fortune that "I think we have...

RIM has agreed to a patent licensing agreement with Nokia that includes a one-off fee and on-going payments "all from RIM to Nokia." As part of the agreement, the two companies will drop all current patent litigation. "We are very pleased to have resolved our patent licensing issues with RIM," says Nokia, "this agreement demonstrates Nokia’s industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market." The precise...

BlackBerry Z10 leaked as name of first BlackBerry 10 phone

BlackBerry 10 Hardware Teaser

According to a leaked image, we now have a name for the first BlackBerry 10 phone: the BlackBerry Z10. Unwired View has posted an apparently leaked piece of promotional material from a trusted source, showing a phone that looks much like the L-Series we've seen before in both black and white accompanied by text reading "The New BlackBerry Z10." The new phone is expected on January 30th, when RIM holds its official BlackBerry 10 launch event.

UK carriers pledge support for BB10 despite global concerns

RIM's new wave of smartphones will be sold on the UK's top three carriers. EE (which encompasses both T-mobile and Orange), O2, Vodafone, and Three have all announced they intend to carry BB10 handsets early next year. BlackBerry is still a popular brand in the UK, especially among teenagers, so the unilateral support doesn't come as a huge surprise: statistics from last year showed that RIM held 24 percent of the UK smartphone market, a...
