Is "Redguard" the next Skyrim DLC pack, or a new Elder Scrolls game?

Mysterious ZeniMax trademark repeatedly extended

Another Skyrim DLC pack? Bethesda, wiz zees 30-hour expansions you are spoiling us. Also, have you thought of the metaphysical fallout? Surely, the staple-gunning of yet another game-sized chunk of Elder Scrollwork to Skyrim's mountainous immensity would undo the very fabric of the Transmundane, tumbling the various planes of Oblivion into, well, oblivion. Also, I haven't even fought the Ebony Warrior yet. Only 40-odd levels to go...

If certain stealthy manoeuvrings on the trademark and patents front are any indication, the next (final?) Skyrim DLC pack will focus on the Redguard, skilled warriors who hail from the nation of Hammerfell, just off Skyrim's south-western border. Bethesda's parent company Zenimax trademarked the term "Redguard" as regards "downloadable computer game software offered via the internet and wireless devices" way, way back in March 2011, but has yet to file a Statement of Use.

The firm has, however, repeatedly and successfully filed to extend its trademark over the intervening months, most recently in August 2012. The trademark will elapse in February 2013 unless Zenimax once again files for extension. Given the hotly suspected arrival of next generation hardware at or around E3 this year, further dilly-dallying on the subject of Skyrim add-ons seems unwise - new console announcements tend to spell doom for current gen sales. Unless, of course, Redguard is in fact a full-blown game, planned for release on the Xbox 720. Pinches of salt, and all that...

This wouldn't be the first Redguard-centric Elder Scrolls title Bethesda has thrown together - the studio published a third-person spin-off, The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard, in 1998. If you're in the mood for a little lore-mining, the Elder Scrolls wiki offers a long, straggly, interesting history of Hammerfell which makes mention of a massive golem known as the Numidium.

OXM user mistergrimm noted in November 2011 that "there is a city called Dragonstar on [Hammerfell's] border with Skyrim that is, or at least used to be, split between the two nations. Its absence from the game is a bit suspicious to me." Any other suspicions to broach, ladies and gentlemen?

  1. There's already an ES game called Redguard, so my money is gonna go down on "more DLC".

  2. Probably is going by Dragonborn and Dawnguard both leaking. They're definitely doing another one because they said on facebook or twitter to watch out for lots more in 2013. Not even started Dragonborn.

  3. im still waiting for Valenwood as a DLC. Bosmers just can't catch a break these days

  4. I heard Dragonborn was a bugfest, so I'm waiting for a patch before starting it. But then, I heard that about Dawnguard as well and risked it anyway. The only bug I had was Florentius Baenius being hostile when I was trying to rescue him and waiting 24 hours fixed that right up.

That thing about Dragonstar sounds about right for a DLC called Redguard. If we've been to Morrowind already, why not Hammerfell?

I'd like to kick those snotty Thalmor bastards back to the Summerset Isle, too. Can I have a DLC about that, Bethesda? You could call it How Skyrim Got Its God Back... er, or something.

    Bethesda.....Job......Give him one

  6. i say dlc although the hole island is about the size of skyrim according to alot of maps so i dunno if they do make it a dlc then i can see it being like shivering isle to oblivion if they take there time with it and get the scale right, im mainly just hoping for a sunder to go with my keening or maybe even wraithguard :')

  7. I think if it is a DLC set in Hammerfell it will be in a specific area or a city for instance, something akin to Morrowind: Tribunal for example.

However I do really want a DLC maybe going back to Cyrodill and see the effects of the War with the Thalmor.

  8. Seeing as Redguard is already an Elder Scrolls game I'd assume they're just making sure nobody copies the title or anything

  9. Like already said is probably just making sure no one steals it.

Personally I'd rather have DLC about the Dwemer and Falmer, then let them upgrade Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim for a next gen box set of loveleyness (I can dream). Before setting their sights on making the next game which will consist of the summerset isles, valenwood and elsweyr. :p

  10. im still waiting for Valenwood as a DLC. Bosmers just can't catch a break these days

Much as I'd love to take a trip home with my trusty Bosmer archer I think Valenwood might be a bit tricky to do what with all the cities having a tendency to wander about.

  11. Still yet to play Skyrim, how long can I leave it before I become embarrassingly late to the party?

Sounds interesting though definitely, the continued rumour mill from those guys is always entertaining.

I don't know, have you played Oblivion yet?

    ....err...nope

  14. I'd actually love the next game to be in the Black Marsh - imagine, with the next gen hardware this crazy jungle marsh/swamp with the enormous sentient Hist trees. According to the Elder Scrolls wiki, its supposed to be a "lush and threatening land teeming with poisonous plants and violent predators". Out of all the remaining areas on Tamriel this, by far, sounds the most different from the other ares. I guess we had a glimpse in Oblivion in the extreme southern portion of the map, but from what I've read both Valenwood and Elsweyr are way more reminiscent to Cyrodiil then the Black Marsh is. Bethesda seems to change things up like they did in Skyrim. It would also be interesting to have the setting be a prequel, 1000's of years prior when the original elves from Somerset arrived on the mainland - never covered that in a game.

    ....err...nope

In that case I'd say you could put off Skyrim for 7+ years

  16. They wouldn't release another Elder scroll game so soon, I don't think.

  17. ^ This, Especially since there's an Elder Scrolls MMO releasing this year.

  18. the elder scrolls franchise isnt limited by the current geography, all throughout the series there has been random pieces of lore and trivia(ive only played morrowind oblivion and skyrim) which has mention that humans first arrived oj tamriel from another more distant land across the norther ocean, if bethesda could very easily release one or two dlcs on skyrim wherein the dragonborn travels to distant lands righting wrongs and what-not the next game could very easily be on another continent introducing new races, new cultures, etc etc... therefore extending the series indefinitely... just a thought
