New Lord of the Rings game is Guardians of Middle-Earth

FEAR studio crafting Xbox Live arena battler

Warner has announced Guardians of Middle-Earth, a "multiplayer online battle arena" game from Condemned and F.E.A.R. developer Monolith Productions, slated to release on Xbox Live in autumn 2012.

The game brings 10 plays together in five versus five punch-ups for the fate of Tolkein's universe, and allows you to control such celebrities as Gandalf, Sauron, Gollum and Thráin. We're not sure who Thráin is, truth be told. Perhaps he's from the forthcoming Peter Jackson flick The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which shares content with Guardians of Middle-Earth at points.

You'll also be able to - communicate with other players via voice chat! Access leaderboards! Utilise "deep skills and abilities"! Download new Guardians in the run-up to the film's release! Sounds rather like a cash-in, doesn't it, but don't count Monolith out just yet - this is the studio behind the flawed but enjoyably quirky Gotham City Imposters.

More as we get it.

  1. Will this be like Battle for middle earth?

  2. It sounds quite a lot like the old Conquest games.

  3. Love MOBA games, love LotR: instant buy - I'm excited!

Dude, you need to get Dragons Dogma then - saw you said you tried (and failed at game) the other day, it doesn't have the LotR badge on it but it's the best LotR game i've ever played! I feel like i've got the fellowship with me jogging around the countryside!
