Subject: Some epic college class rule

So today is my second day of second semester as a sophomore in college. One of my classes that I am taking is economic geography, an intro course. This is more of an elective than anything else and was a last minute selection.

Anyway, the first day for this class was today and we were given an intro, syllabus crap, and all that jazz.

Cutting to the chase . . .

participation is 10% of our grade. If you are caught texting/using your phone in class even once, you automatically lose 10% of your final grade. This means that the highest grade you can receive from that point on is a 90%.

rofl. I think this is awesome, cuz I also hate it when I see people texting in class. In my mind i'm screaming "why the -blam!- are you here if ur not paying attention?! GTFO!"

This goes for people on their laptops and using facebook and -blam!-

Would be even better if he didn't tell you guys about it

The students would have authority to report the professor. Initial shock, but sweet revenge >:)

This rule is fairly common, and very just in my opinion. If I were a professor, nothing would piss me off more than seeing idiots texting away.

To be fair, if I'm going to goof off on my Laptop (which is all of the time, in fact I'm on my laptop in lecture at the moment), I go to the back of the Lecture Hall and minimize my exposure to other students.

OMG
Master Chief w/o his Helmet!

Stosh <3's me vicariously... at least someone does...

Depends on the class in my opinion.

I've had lectures that were so pointless and poorly organized that I could not shake the feeling I was being ripped off. If someone wants to do other things or be disrespectful in a class like that, I don't blame them.

That is respectable and considerate to the students. But as a teacher/professor it's nonetheless insulting.

I ask myself why people like you decide to even come to class if you aren't going to go for its purpose. If I were you, if I didn't feel like (or didn't need to) going to class, I just wouldn't go. It's easier on you, too. There's no time in a class where you can divert your attention to a screen. If the class is so slow/easy/boring, don't go to class.

Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

If I am paying for credit hours, and indirectly paying for the professor's salary, I am going to do what I please in the class, so long as I am not disturbing other students.

Truth is, I hate rules like this. If I am distracted, that's my own damn fault, but I don't want to lose points I otherwise earned fairly. I could ace every exam because I studied my butt off, but if I text once, I'd automatically receive an A- because the professor is sensitive.

Not appropriate.

The fact of the matter is that I don't have to type down every single word that the professor says to pass the class. I type down the main ideas, and I type down that which I'll have problems remembering, but a lot of the elaboration and such isn't essential or is easily memorized. I understand it's quite useful for some people, but I'm the sort of guy who hates having his hands idle, so when I'm not taking notes I'm discussing stuff on Bnet or looking at other things on the internet or I program.

I'm a Senior Computer Science student, and this is what works for me. Skipping class is definitely a terrible idea, and is either a sign of lazyness or overconfidence.

"Even though many may not think so, ignorance and innocence are one and the same. The only difference is that one sounds nicer."

"I once knew a man who spent his entire life contemplating where we go after our death....it's a shame he realized it a second too late to tell anyone."

Kind of a dumb rule in my opinion, but okay then.

Anecdotal story:

I had a professor who banned laptops in class. This was actually kind of a big deal, since it was an engineering class. Why he refused to allow their use in class was unknown, but he was very sensitive and was known to get upset when people wouldn't even look at him. Dunno.

Anywho, one of my good friends and long time "don't give a damn" guy thought of a good way to push his patience.

In the middle of class one day he opened his back pack, pulled out a toaster and proceeded to make toasted pop tarts. The class was silent as the teacher watched him with what can only be described as confusion and frustration. The toaster popped, he carefully pulled the pop tarts out (with the mandatory "Ow, hot, hot, hot") and put the toaster away.

It. Was. Exceptional.

My name is from Star Wars. Now you know.

Feel free to follow me on my twitter and stalk me.

I took last semester a critical thinking class of about 300 students. The instructor was mildly insane when it came to enforcing rules. We could not use any technology in class, including phones or laptops. If we got caught using anything, we failed the class. We all thought it was a bluff and one guy got caught a good 3 weeks into the semester using his phone. He made the student leave and he failed the course. It was hilarious and sad at the same time.

That is pretty sensible. I forgot the whole "I'm paying so I do what I want" argument (as long as ur not distracting students).

If you're like hybelos, you're cool. But you can't not distract people around you once your phone or laptop is out. It's hard not to distract people.

Agreed. All the changes are good and add variety. Do we really want another Halo 3? Just running around with one gun and no armor abilities? It's good that 343 wants to try something new. Do we really want the same thing for three more games?

I came here expecting some epic classroom rule.

Don't take your laptop. Take a pen/pencil and write down the notes. Your hands won't be idle. And then there's infamous doodling when you're not paying attention.

College student here, if I had a professor that had a rule like that I would honestly drop that class right then and there and walk out. There is no need for that kind of rule, I can see laptops being distracting, but just make those who use them sit towards the back of the lecture hall and the texting rule is just silly. So what happens if I am expecting an important text or something? I have to leave the room and answer it? Am I better off just skipping the class so I don't potentially lose 10% of my grade? I'm more than capable of doing 2 things at once. Unless the professor is Morgan Freeman, I doubt he or she is interesting enough to keep your attention for however long your class is for the whole semester.

There are some skillful professors out there, not gonna lie. Some know how to grab your attention and make you enjoy the class. And i'm not talking about free points or easy classes.

Mandatory attendance or penalties for missing classes are the two reasons I'd mess around in class. If I have to be forced to attend a class I paid for where I can just read the book to learn the lecture then I sure as hell am gunna mess around in class.
