This rule is fairly common, and very just in my opinion. If I were a professor, nothing would piss me off more than seeing idiots texting away.

Depends on the class in my opinion.

I've had lectures that were so pointless and poorly organized that I could not shake the feeling I was being ripped off. If someone wants to do other things or be disrespectful in a class like that, I don't blame them.

If I am paying for credit hours, and indirectly paying for the professor's salary, I am going to do what I please in the class, so long as I am not disturbing other students.

Truth is, I hate rules like this. If I am distracted, that's my own damn fault, but I don't want to lose points I otherwise earned fairly. I could ace every exam because I studied my butt off, but if I text once, I'd automatically receive an A- because the professor is sensitive.

Not appropriate.

Anecdotal story:

I had a professor who banned laptops in class. This was actually kind of a big deal, since it was an engineering class. Why he refused to allow their use in class was unknown, but he was very sensitive and was known to get upset when people wouldn't even look at him. Dunno.

Anywho, one of my good friends and long time "don't give a damn" guy thought of a good way to push his patience.

In the middle of class one day he opened his back pack, pulled out a toaster and proceeded to make toasted pop tarts. The class was silent as the teacher watched him with what can only be described as confusion and frustration. The toaster popped, he carefully pulled the pop tarts out (with the mandatory "Ow, hot, hot, hot") and put the toaster away.

It. Was. Exceptional.

That is pretty sensible. I forgot the whole "I'm paying so I do what I want" argument (as long as ur not distracting students).

If you're like hybelos, you're cool. But you can't not distract people around you once your phone or laptop is out. It's hard not to distract people.

Is this you're first college semester out of high school op? This is pretty common among teachers.

That is respectable and considerate to the students. But as a teacher/professor it's nonetheless insulting.

I ask myself why people like you decide to even come to class if you aren't going to go for its purpose. If I were you, if I didn't feel like (or didn't need to) going to class, I just wouldn't go. It's easier on you, too. There's no time in a class where you can divert your attention to a screen. If the class is so slow/easy/boring, don't go to class.

:(The fact of the matter is that I don't have to type down every single word that the professor says to pass the class. I type down the main ideas, and I type down that which I'll have problems remembering, but a lot of the elaboration and such isn't essential or is easily memorized. I understand it's quite useful for some people, but I'm the sort of guy who hates having his hands idle, so when I'm not taking notes I'm discussing stuff on Bnet or looking at other things on the internet or I program.

I'm a Senior Computer Science student, and this is what works for me. Skipping class is definitely a terrible idea, and is either a sign of lazyness or overconfidence.

Don't take your laptop. Take a pen/pencil and write down the notes. Your hands won't be idle. And then there's infamous doodling when you're not paying attention.

College student here, if I had a professor that had a rule like that I would honestly drop that class right then and there and walk out. There is no need for that kind of rule, I can see laptops being distracting, but just make those who use them sit towards the back of the lecture hall and the texting rule is just silly. So what happens if I am expecting an important text or something? I have to leave the room and answer it? Am I better off just skipping the class so I don't potentially lose 10% of my grade? I'm more than capable of doing 2 things at once. Unless the professor is Morgan Freeman, I doubt he or she is interesting enough to keep your attention for however long your class is for the whole semester.

:)My handwriting is illegible. There's a reason why I'm a Computer Science student.
