No she hasn't. She has always asked to take piano lessons and I said we can't afford it. She heard about Laguardia from a friend at school and said that is where she wants to go so can play piano. I didn't have the heart to tell her she has to try out and with no training she doesn't stand a chance. [ Reply | More ]

If you can afford the keyboard, can you just indulge her and buy it. That way she can have fun, try on her own and give youtube videos a shot. I don't see the harm in that and if circumstances change and you can afford lessons in the future that would be a bonus. [ Reply | More ]

What about a group piano class for beginners to start? Must be more affordable. If she's really showing interest and initiative, it's worth trying to make it happen. Another idea is approaching your school music teacher about lessons. Maybe they offer something reasonable. [ Reply | More ]

Probably not what you want to hear, but given the situation you describe, this is not a dream that will be realized by your DD. For one, you sound like a pretty passive parent. She's been asking for 3 years, and you still haven't found a way around this? A used keyboard? A student willing to give a quick lesson for a quick $20 once a week? 95% of piano or any music instruction is outside of the teacher's presence, it's in the practice, which you as the parent have to either rigorously enforce, or the kid has to have the drive. It all sounds far more like an idea you are batting around like a cat with a toy than anything you are taking seriously. I'm sorry this sounds harsh, but to make it ti LaGuardia you need to be a little bit more resourceful than you are being. Not having the money for piano lessons is not a huge, insurmountable obstacle. If you were talking about horseback riding I'd be on your side. But piano? It is probably the least expensive instrument to learn. - daughter of concert pianist [ Reply | More ]

When she dumped him for another guy, he licked his wounds for a day or two and then hung out with his friends again. He didn't dwell on it or turn angry or vengeful or anything. She says she doesn't feel like herself unless she looks a certain way and she doesn't look that way when she binge eats. I would estimate that she has up to 10,000 calories in a binge and honestly her appearance does change. I don't know how to help her. It has gotten to the point where she can't leave the house because of embarrassment over her puffy face and general appearance. She has seen a psychiatrist and is taking Prozac, but the behavior continues. Her best friend just confided in me that she often fasts for 3, 5, or 7 days. I am horrified I had absolutely no idea I just thought she sometimes overrate. WWYD? How can I help her? I am sick over this. 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Sorry. You are right to be very concerned. In addition to being debilitating, these problems can be fatal. Everyone is different, but I was bulimic in college (age 20) and I would binge eat like that, but I didn't fast. I did exercise a ton though. For me, getting on an antidepressant really helped curb my binging urges. What would you do if your DD had an untreated illness like diabetes or a heart condition or cancer? Insist she see a doctor? Look into treatment options? Her ED is an illness. If you simply look at her situation as she can't get a job because she won't go out with a puffy face, you are missing the bigger picture. I hope she finds a program that can help her. I was helped by a therapist, but I was also very clear what I wanted out of the sessions and if I felt like it wasn't helping I share that with my therapist. Therapists don't mind being transparent about the process and often ask how you are experiencing the sessions. But many people are very passive in the process and afraid to speak up. If you feel like they are not getting a sense of you, tell them and take it from there. [ Reply | More ]

Mine did, but I made it a very finite experience. I eventually started to have little to talk about, or they were just rehashes of things we had already been through. I started to get frustrated when we had stopped talking about issues that I had originally desired therapy to help with, and she started identifying "new problems" that I didn't feel were problems. For example, if I met someone new and didn't much like them, she insisted it was a problem with me, not with the person I'd just met. (No, sometimes you just meet people who don't appeal to you.) So, after 3 years, I left and have not been tempted to start up again. However, during the time I did it, it completely helped me resolve some issues I had. [ Reply | More ]

I can feel sympathy for the illness itself; the problem is that bulimia is a disorder that is both repulsive and is a tremendous imposition on those who have to live with them or deal with them. Just like you can have sympathy at a distance for alcoholism, but it's no way to live to have a drunk in your life. I had a bulimic roommate in college. Our bathroom stank and she was always stealing food or bingeing behind closed doors in her room. It was impossible to eat with her and know everything on her plate was going to come back up soon. I felt sorry for her, yes, but it was no fun being in my shoes, either. I eventually had to move out halfway through the year. [ Reply | More ]
