Pandora's toughest adventure!
Can rebirth save an online game?
Chris Taylor details new game.
Try to remember the last time you booted up an MMO, any MMO, for the first time. Chances are, you ran around for a bit, killed some weak enemies, picked up the paltry few copper coins they dropped, and then bought your first piece of non-starter gear from an NPC. But wait. Where did the NPC get his stock? Xsyon attempts to answer this by filling the gaping holes in an MMO world -- with player experiences. Read More »
Things looked grim -- and not in that fun post-apocalyptic way -- a year ago, when Ukrainian developer of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, GSC Worlds, announced its dissolution. But it seems things have picked up. The team hasn't just gone on to form Vostok Games and announce new open-world survival shooter Survarium -- it's already optimistically got its future for the next year and a half mapped out, too, with beta testing set for the final quarter of this year. The Aldmeri Dominion, the Daggerfall Covenant, and the Ebonheart Pact are the three main factions of The Elder Scrolls Online. In this developer video diary, it's revealed by Bethesda writer Lawrence Schick that the factions all once got along swimmingly, but obviously, that wouldn't make for the world's greatest MMO (because nobody ever played an MMO about hugging other people, right?). The latest patch on the screeching metal behemoth that is Hawken comes next week. There's a number of fixes and balancing changes, but the most notable addition is a robust-looking new mech, the Reaper. Its specs and loadout will only be revealed on January 24th, but suffice it to say, I don't think it'll be harvesting wheat. Read More »
Chris Taylor has posted a new video update on the Wildman Kickstarter page explaining the decision to lay off "a substantial number of the team." To summarize, it's because he didn't want to screw over his employees if the Kickstarter funding didn't come through. He's asking for feedback from us: should he continue his Kickstarter drive, which, if successful, would allow him to hire at least some of the team (who have not yet found new jobs) back, or should he call it quits? Personally, I'm urging him to press forward. GPG's games have given (well, sold) me hundreds of hours of fun over the years, and I'm totally willing to throw down another $20 to allow it to continue to do so, especially when I'll get another game in the bargain. Let me explain why you should, too. Read More »
It's such a fine and natural sight, but... okay, nobody is dancing in the moonlight. Yet. However the beta server for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has just implemented times of day, meaning we'll get to watch the sky brighten and fall into shadow each day. I wonder if FFXIV will implement that other symptom of the passing of time. You know. Wrinkles. Read More »
The most memorable thing about the Deus Ex games, for me, was their portrayal of a future Asia. Hong Kong and Hengsha were absolutely captivating just to wander through, let alone unearth conspiracies in. There's just something about that collision of corruption-riddled dystopia and streetside noodle shops, you know? That's why I'm glad to see that the Half-Life 2 mod NeoTokyo has received a significant update, adding eight new maps to roam about in. Oh yeah. Now, which way to the sleazy nightclub crawling with gang members? Read More »
How do you turn an everyman into an unstoppable action hero who can absorb bullet blasts like spitwads and deal more damage than should be possible? Give that man a suit of armor! But not just any armor, mind you: we're talking about power suits that have been built to boost reflexes, speed, strength, and maybe incorporate a few extra surprises under the hood. In the gaming world, only the strongest-or best-suited-will survive, which is why we've built our own list of the most iconic power armor in PC gaming. Read More »
Huh. Is there anyone those Total War developers don't have beef with? This time, Macedonians are joining the fray as a playable faction -- and they're baying for blood and clanging their hi-res-textured shields together while wearing headcrests in wildly varying shapes. The detail in this game, I tell ya. Read More »
GameSpy's Free Agent is your advance recon into the world of free-to-play games. His mission: jump into a free game every week and put in some gaming hours to see how much fun can be had without spending a cent, then try out some paid items to see if they're worth the asking price. This week he parties up and ventures into the instanced dungeons of free-to-play MMORPG Dragon Nest. Read More »
Seems like ages ago we learned about the next downloadable add-on for Skyrim. Curious, I combed through the archives for the Dragonborn announcement and discovered it was made on November 15. *Shaking fist at exclusivity agreements* That story also reminded me that Dragonborn is the dragon-flying, Solstheim-traveling Skyrim DLC adventure I've been waiting for. As Bethesda revealed this morning, we'll finally get to play it on PC next month. Read More »
The Legend of Grimrock editor launched in October, and there are already more than 450 fan-made dungeons players can crawl their way through. That should keep fans busy until indie developer Almost Human is ready to imprison us once again with a full-on Legend of Grimrock sequel, which, judging by these first two screenshots, is closer than we thought. I travel to Whiterun for the Companions, Winterhold for the Mages, and Riften for the Thieves. Skyrim is loaded with things to do, but like all Elder Scrolls games, it's still largely defined by its factions. Oddly enough, it's the one area where mods have come up short... until now. Introducing Faction: Pit Fighter, a mod by Thirteenoranges that adds a new organization to Skyrim while bringing back the glory of Oblivion's arena. Read More »
I'm having trouble getting past the fact online play is a requirement for the new SimCity, and the angry god in me is deeply disappointed I won't be able to save, destroy, and reload my creations. And yet I still want to play it. We'll all get our first chance next week when the SimCity beta goes live. Read More »
The mind-breaking, casually fluctuating world of Antichamber has finally received a release date. After spending months honing its ability to pummel players with its philosophical perspective (phew), developer Alexander Bruce confirms that it'll be hitting Steam on January 31st. Though the price is still yet to be determined, he jokes, "At least it's coming out, right?!" Read More »
It left us feeling like we'd been mugged.
