Best worst keynote EVER

Qualcomm_ftw

What do Steve Ballmer, archbishop Desmond Tutu, Guillermo del Toro, Alice Eve, Big Bird, Maroon 5 being dubbed by Dido, a Rolls Royce, a bunch of actors (so badly trying to portray hipster cool kids people thought it was a parody at first until the cold hard realization that it wasn’t set in) and the Qualcomm CEO trying to shove “Born Mobile” and “Generation M” down people’s throats have in common?
They were all part of Qualcomm’s keynote at CES, a keynote so ridiculous it puts Ballmer to shame.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new winner.

The new Kavinsky track Protovision. I’m glad he’s using Vimeo now as well. Nice track as always of course.

Dear daughter

Ik kan het niet, ik kan het wel
Ik eet een muis, dat geeft niks niet

Dear Amy, you’re cute for making up lyrics at age 3 and dancing to your own made song,
even if your choice of lyrics leaves us a little puzzled.

Pacific Rim trailer

Pacific Rim

We always thought alien life would come from the stars but it came from deep beneath the sea – a portal between dimensions in the Pacific Ocean. Something out there had discovered us. They counted on the humans to hide, to give up, to fail.

Pacific Rim, already THE movie I’m looking forward most to this year.
Giant aliens + battle suits + giant mechas + Guillermo del Toro, can’t lose.

Best Mac Apps of 2012

A nice roundup of the 100 best Mac apps of 2012, according to Addictive Tips. I’m not sure if they’re the best, but it certainly is a nice list of apps released over the year, with some nice finds in there.

USB drive disconnect when the Mac goes to sleep

Jettison Mac

If you bought a nice USB hard drive for your Mac but it gets disconnected every time your Mac goes to sleep, and it won’t reconnect upon wake, there’s a simple solution for that. I had the same problem with my 2TB Samsung drive and found this neat little program on the App Store called Jettison, which for €1.79 will automatically dismount any drives (and network connection, mounted disks and what not if you so desire) AND remount them again when the computer wakes up. Originally intended for people with portable Macs who quickly need to pack up and go it also works perfectly for people with stubborn USB drives. The app itself is small and unobtrusive, it just adds a little icon to your menubar (and even that can be disabled) and does its work in the background.
Jettison is available through the App Store or directly from the developer’s site.

Hmm, and a little update the next day: while Jettison is perfectly capable of remounting the drive after the Mac’s gone to sleep for a bit, it seems incapable of waking the drive up after a longer nap of a few hours. :/

Download in progress… Civilization IV: Colonization

Colonization downloading on Steam

I’m only familiar with this version from back in ye olde Amiga days, I know it’s a remake in the Civ IV game but I still hope (against better judgement perhaps) that it’ll play like the classic. Which reminds me, still haven’t tried Freecol.

2013 in mobile

Windows Fail

Well waddayaknow, it’s 2013 already. No idea what the year is going to bring, but just the news from the first few days promises that it’s going to be an interesting year for mobile phones and tablets.
Microsoft still doesn’t understand consumers. It’s amazing how they can keep getting things wrong for years on end even with so many examples of how it can be improved. Hell even Samsung is better at copying Apple.

Ubuntu is heading to phones, and while it looks lovely I think Mark’s doing a little too much wishful thinking, not to mention he’s been watching Steve’s keynotes a bit too much, from the choice of outfit, hand gestures and using words like ‘magical’:

‘Ubuntu is the first platform to offer full convergence across mobile, the cloud and desktop computers…’ really Mark? Really? Somehow makes it look less serious and more ‘awww, cute, look at him try’. Which explains the top comment at the moment.

Samsung and others are beginning to realize that Windows Phone won’t be going anywhere and Android isn’t quite what Google promised, and promised, and promised. And so Samsung is looking at Tizen, an Open Source mobile platform. No idea what this is going to bring but at least it’s open and made for the sake of being a great platform, instead of just made for the sake of offering a Google search bar. Hell even Google itself is making better Google apps for iOS than for Android. Sweet irony.

Meanwhile said Google seems to have developed a grudge against Microsoft and is currently blocking Maps from being accessed on a WP device. Which comes after them blocking YouTube access, which comes after cutting ActiveSync support. Ah well, this should get entertaining.

In other news no one really knows what Apple is up to, other than some rumours about the new iOS, a watch/computer and perhaps even an iPhone mini, which doesn’t make much sense to me but who knows.
Let the games commence.

Warcraft Europe is down

Warcraft Europe down

Looks like most of Europe can’t get online in Warcraft, this started last night with random disconnects and world server going down.
Saw this posted on the forums where it’s drowned in all the nerdrage comments, thought it was worth a share:
