Heaviest Rain in Four Months Possibly On the Way

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA – With a moderate drought still in place across much of the ABC 13 viewing area, any chance of rain is welcome news. If forecasts are correct, we are in for a soaking Monday into Tuesday.

A storm system to our west will be pulling up moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, directly into our area: something that Virginia has not seen a lot of this year.

ABC 13 Meteorologist Lyndsay Tapases puts the likelihood of rain at nearly 90 percent Monday and Tuesday. She says some areas could get two inches of rain, with up to three inches in areas south and west of Lynchburg.

"Our viewing area is still under a moderate drought… looking back at the climate data, the last time we saw a one to two inch rain event within 48 hours was from Sept 17 to 18, 2012… about four months!" Tapases said Sunday.

While the drought goes back further than 2013, Tapases points out that this next chance of rain could get this calendar year started off on the right track.

"Lynchburg, Danville, Roanoke all about .80" to 1" below average already for the year of 2013, so if we can get a solid one to two inches of rain, we may see all of our climate locations (Roanoke, Lynchburg, Danville) actually running at a surplus for the year, which would be great to start off on," Tapases pointed out.
