On the scene at Square Enix Party 2007

Square Enix fans come from far and wide to check out the publisher's upcoming wares.

MAKUHARI--Japan's Makuhari Messe Convention Center this weekend is once again the scene of Japanese publisher Square Enix's unique fan fest, the Square Enix Party. The showcase of the company's software lineup, present and future, marks the party's return after a one-year break. Much like the first event held in 2005, the party is a weekend-long gathering and celebration open to the public.

Square Enix Party 2007

GameSpot finds out about Japan's final fantasies.

The centerpiece of the festivities is a showcase of Square Enix's wares, in playable and trailer form, although it also serves as a one-stop shop for anyone looking to buy game-related goods. The day started as all events like this do--with a massive line. While the party officially kicked off at 10 a.m., some lucky fans were able to get in an hour early and were even given a limited-edition DS case.

Much like last year's event, the party has a Tokyo Game Show vibe to it--complete with massive lines, stage shows, schwag at each of the game-specific booths, a variety of different stages and theaters showing trailers and hosting live events, and the always necessary dose of cosplay. This year's stage and theater layout features three key areas: the open mega theater (which doubles as an event stage), the closed mega theater, and a dedicated stage built into the Final Fantasy XI booth.

While all three areas featured massive lines, the closed mega theater shaped up to be the hot ticket of the day. The massive enclosed area featured a 40-minute showcase of trailers that included some of the most anticipated games in the company's portfolio as well as sneak peeks of brand-new titles. Given the theater's limited seating and once-an-hour showtimes, there seemed to be a perpetual line snaking around its entrance from the moment the show opened.

The next hotspot was the open mega theater, which was a combination event stage theater that alternated between 45-minute trailer blocks and hosting game-specific stage shows. Saturday's stage shows included presentations on the recently announced Star Ocean games that featured the voice actors, the DS title It's a Wonderful World, and a Dragon Quest Monster Battle Road card-based arcade game aimed at youngsters. The Final Fantasy XI stage, nestled inside the massive booth dedicated to the massively multiplayer online role-playing game, featured a mix of events that ranged from competitions to developer presentations and live piano music.

Besides the stage shows, the party offered plenty to occupy those in attendance. Attendees hankering to get their game on could head over to dedicated game booths that featured playable demos of released and upcoming games. Demo kiosks of unreleased games drew massive crowds to try out titles such as Dragon Quest Swords for the Wii, Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 2 for the DS, Final Fantasy II for the PlayStation Portable, DS Style for the DS, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates for the DS, Final Fantasy XII International Zodiac Job System for the PS2, Crisis Core: FFVII for the PSP, Dragon Quest Monster Battle Road for arcades, and Itadaki Street featuring Super Mario for the DS.

At the same time, booths featuring recently released games such as Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings for DS, the Final Fantasy Tactics remake on PSP, Final Fantasy XI for the PC, and Final Fantasy I for the PSP had surprisingly long lines as well. One of the reasons for some of the interest in the already-released titles was an exclusive gift being offered to attendees who made the rounds to play games. Those in attendance received a stamp booklet that contained slots for stamps that could be received after playing FF Tactics Advanced 2, FF Tactics on the PSP, FF XII Revenant Wings for the DS, and FFXII International. Those who managed to do so were rewarded for their efforts with a swanky LCD clock. In addition to the console, DS, and PSP game booths, Square had a large booth dedicated to its mobile offerings, which have a hefty following in Japan.

It wasn't all about games. The show floor also featured areas dedicated to magazines, comics, music CDs, and the always popular gift store. Fans were able to take home 111 items, which included pins, lighters, action figures, and plush toys. Finally, the floor also featured two booths that offered mini-museums on Star Ocean and the 20th anniversary of the Final Fantasy series.

All told, the first day of the show got the party off to a solid start. The mix of activities, playable demos, and stage shows seemed to be just what the fans wanted. The hall was packed throughout the entire day and stayed that way up until the 5 p.m. close, when a huge mob assembled in front of the FFXI stage for a piano concert that wound up the day.

i gotta get a few things off my chest.. and one being about rpgsuperfan's comment.. calm down.. he is sort of right in a sense that in away the Final Fantasy Tactics Universes are the same place.. let's take for instance the name of the world Ivalice.. this is also the town that Marche starts off in at the beginning of Tactics Advanced.. It is also the same name of the World in Tactics Advanced as well as the Tactics... And about him not knowing what the Job System is that is a bit untrue because if you listen you will notice that he uses the entire Final Fantasy XII: International Zodiac Job System. Though i do have a big beef about the reporters not know Japanese in Japan, BUT as i am learning the language i can't say too much about that (since i myself can't even read on kanji symbol). Also how much Japanese do you know (more than likely not much). I also a beef of sorts with the fact that they called Cosplay a problem.. it isn't really much of a problem more like a hobby and more and more people in America or going towards Cosplay so it really isn't just secluded to Japan ^_^ (NO FLAMING ME)

@rpgsuperfan Take a chill-pill. Geez. If you don't like Gamespot's coverage, there are plenty of other game-sites. While I like everything about FF7, I wouldn't mind seeing more FF8 stuff, regardless of popularity. It's actually pretty refreshing to see someone who's pro-FF8 again.

It's all good though. Good for the local community and great publicity and marketing. But i would much prefer them to hurry up and spend the time completing the development quicker, but that's a personnel opinion. These days i can't even be bothered to look at screen shots - what's the point? If i want a game i'm gonna get it anyway, not to mention what you see on the monitor is 'sometimes' exaggerated greatly from what you get on the normal tv screen. Still i suppose there's reason for everything - especially if you have limited funds available...

jamvng , I think the PS2 sales over the X360 speak more to people not willing to spend 400-600 dollars for a system. The fact that publishers are supporting the PS2 with additional titles means that there is nothing to fear, it will be around awhile. Why should this be too surprising? The PSOne was still kicking hard a few years after PS2 came out. This is old hat. The X360 has much BETTER sales than what it saw in the original Xbox; this alone is a landfall since the OG never made money throughout its life cycle. So if fact, your statement of the PS2 beating out "other" next-gen systems is correct...if anyone really cared about the PS2/X360 sales figures.

Kineticman_a13: I'm looking at it through a business aspect, as I stated in another thread, Square doesn't have any loyalty to Sony, with the PS3's low sales and the X360 out selling the PS3 by more than 2 to 1, the money is with Microsoft's console. For Square to ignore such a large user base of 360 owners as a company would be retarded. If you owned Square would you ignore those kinds of profits and sell a big budget game to a small minority of PS3 users? I think not. It may take a little while, but you'll see FFXIII and other Square tittles on the X360, it's just common sense. Even if the people at Square are racist, doesn't matter, greed is stronger than racism...there's just to much money to loose on Square's part. They may have signed a deal with Sony giving them exclusivity for a period of time ( this is just speculation on my part ) but in time I believe it will be ported over. And I believe Sony would need to own 51% of Square in order to have the deciding factor in Squares decisions, otherwise it's up to the Board members at Square. Did you happen to see the report on the front page of Gamespot, ( Sony facing massive PS3 losses ) who didn't see that one coming...LOL, I wonder how happy they are for forcing the Blu-Ray on the gamers now. I bet Square is looking at that report and thinking about how much money there going to make off there Big budget PS3 exclusive FF games...LOL. So, lets say worst case scenario they don't bring FFXIII, over to the 360, Sony now realizes there in a lot of trouble, they know there loosing the console war. So there going to have to drastically lower the price of there PS3 if they ever want to stand a chance of competing with Microsoft or Nintendo. Somehow making the PS3 affordable to everyone is there only logical move.

@jamalnos If you want to output at full HD ie 1080p then you would also need to get a 1080p capable TV so who's more expensive now? The 360 or the PS3? IMHO I liked what M$ did coz not all people have HDTVs. As for saving games.. the Premium has a 20gb HDD and its still way much cheaper than the PS3. Heck the Elite is way much cheaper than a PS3 As for Sony;s Propriety Medias.. look what happened to the Betamax, ATRAC and MD lol

kineticman_a13

to jehuty599 No u do make sense when u say FF13 will make it to X 360. And believe me I would be the happiest person on earth if it did cause that means I get to save $600. But there are two problems, and its only my personal opinion I cannot back them up with solid data....and they would be... 1. Ppl at Square Enix are a bunch of racist unlike Capcom and dont want to hand MS their heavy hitters. 2. I am not sure about this but I remember some guy (he wasnt a fanboy or I wouldnt have given a damn) saying in one of GameSpot forums that Sony owns share of Square Enix....around 10% of it. I dont know if thats actually true, Nither do I know how much power it gives Sony even if they do own it cause Square is clearly making games for all the platforms...360 included. But if its true and if Sony has any influence over Square they will go to hell's end to stop FF13(one of the heavy hitters) from coming to X360. At least make it a timed exclusive to PS3 which I have no problem with as long as it comes out on the 360 But brother just pray that it comes to X360 cause then I can get a WII and still be left with $350 for games and stuff. If it does it will simply kill the PS3 and I wont have to ever think about buying one or save up for one either.

I am glad to hear SE is pushing out some new titles, but in all honesty I want to reply to some of these posts for the sake of saving us from ignorance. First of all if you check http://reviews.cnet.com/Microsoft_Xbox_360_Elite_game_console/4505-10109_7-32390552.html thats Xbox's HDMI driven xbox, so xbox DOES have hdmi, secondly for most of your information, if you talk to a lot of people, they don't even know what blu-ray is much less give anything about it, when I build a pc, I put stuff that I want in it, not what I think my mom wants on it. So microsoft being a company that has worked with PC's for years does something that lets you ADD or upgrade things. As for sony always being proprietary they put what they think everyone wants on there, and so it drives up the price therefore for some of us cheapo's we don't want to touch it, Im not saying the ps3 is bad because I have no room to say that I am just telling you a consumer's point of a view, because I am one just like the rest of you, I don't really buy into consoles often so if I were I myself am not dishing out that much money for a console, not yet anyways I always let the price drop then go for something. So next time you start talking about who has what and so on, do some research.

jamalnos
jamalnos

Guys, please wake up and know the truth, Xbox 360 machine is less price than PS3, that is true but why? I will tell you. With Xbox 360 If you want to communicate by wireless you must buy it separately, if you want to attach removable memories cards or flashes you must buy another part separately, if you want to see HD movies you must buy another part separately, if you want to save game progress or any other files you must buy a HDD separately, beside no HDMI port yet, and that huge power adapter (where will you put it?). At the end your Xbox 360 will be like a spider web with the devices attached into it . Finally all of that will be the same price of PS3 or more. But in the PS3 side, all of that is built-in inside it. With Blu ray technology, HDMI technology, 1080p technology, CELL Processor (Parallel Power) technology, PS & PS2 emulation power, user friendly interface and that sexy design. So what is the mistake that Sony did?

SE has a strong line up coming. Ofcourse FF XIII is what I'm realling waiting for. Yuck_Foo, thats a pretty strong statement about the PS3's true competition. Your right in saying that the true down fall may come from within since the PS2 still has a strong following and still has games being developed for it. I bought GOW2 and played it on my PS3, LOL. I really don't care for the console war, its only a means to aid the consumer. In the mean time I'll be playing PS3, PS2, and PS1 games on my next gen system.

i truly get wat everyone here is saying 1* The Xbox 360 is giving u a pretty good deal because of wat it offers and its price 2* jus because the ps3 has blu-ray DOES NOT MAKE it good. Sony ur not as good as u think u are anymore ,LET IT GO!!!!! 3* Square Enix would make a good profit seeing as the Xbox 360 has sold 17 million consoles and the ps3 only 4.5 million the people have spoken

@ Yuck_Foo: It depends, that when you're talking financial statements of these 2 companies, if it's only in their gaming divisions or the overall company. Because it would be obvious for Microsoft which has a quasi-monopoly on computer OS' sales and licenses of use.

Yuck_Too
Yuck_Too

--the_real_VIP -- I don't know what the final cost of the original Xbox was but assuming you are correct the fact is people can and do compare fiscal statements. Only difference here is while MS might have lost $4 billion over 4 years they still make over $40 Billion in Profit each and every year. Sony on the other hand...well they average closer to 500 Million in Profit a year so a $2 Billion loss in a single year for them is huge. And with public shareholders to answer too it's never a fun time. And to ignore the fact that of the 40 Million active PS2's out there more then a few are people who own more then 1 is silly. But one thing is for sure. People who are buying a PS2 now are sure not planning to buy a PS3 any time soon.

the_real_VIP
the_real_VIP

@ Jehuty599: You don't even need to agree with anybody as anything you said before was just crap as others pointed out. @ Yuck_Foo: From intuitive deduction, it's seriously nonsense to even get more than 1 PS2 just to put it everywhere. Even intuitively, people who do not have high speed internet would rather buy a PS2 (still sold more than 360) instead of spending over a next-gen system which one who is able to afford high speed internet would buy either. "Later today we'll know exactly where Sony stands...as they have to release their fiscal numbers." That doesn't even makes sense as I would ask the same "where was Microsoft was standing when it released it's last financial statement about the first Xbox": which, by the time it was officially discontinued, Microsoft has lost $4 billion on it with zero profit.

Jehuty599
Jehuty599

Yuck_Foo, I totally agree with you, you hit the nail right on the head, you can't argue the facts

Yuck_Too
Yuck_Too

The reason the Core 360 is not going anywhere is because it's exactly the same hardware as the Prem version. Some would argue at this point had you bought a Core and Upgraded the HD you'd now be better off. And think about this, how many of us have multimple PS2's at the cottage, in the car, all over the place?...Why...it's cheap, fun and why not. How many of us will spend $600 on a PS3 for those places...none. Fact is if you don't have High Speed Net access or for that matter a HDTV what exactly do you get for your $600 PS3? As for price drops. Anything Sony drops MS and Nintendo an instantly match and still be making money. If MS was truly cut-throat they would take the same $200+ loss on each unit sold and start selling the 360 for $200 in total. Of course then Sony would be crying Unfair Business Practice. Later today we'll know exactly where Sony stands...as they have to release their fiscal numbers. And like GTA for Xbox...I'd be much more surprised if Square stuck solely with Sony. These are not at all like the early PS2 days...in fact the PS2 will probably be seen as real reason for the PS3's overall failure.

the_real_VIP
the_real_VIP

@ Yuck_Foo: Unless you wouldn't know, the 360 HD DVD add-on woudln't be able to play HD games. And if you don't remember this about GTAIV article: 360 fans were laughing at Sony for retiring the low-end PS3. Then, you hear 360 fans suggesting Rockstar to "not care" about Core owners and even suggesting MS to retire the Core 360. Again, if you never heard of it, the PS3 will have a price drop for which the 60GB is the basic with the 80GB next in line.

Yuck_Too
Yuck_Too

--WalterPaladines -- I love it when people say MS gave people the shaft with the Elite. So tell me...when Sony upped the price of the PS3 $100 (by dropping the Basic model) and gave you a 40gig larger HD and WiFi how is that a much better deal? After all the Elite at comes with HDMI and 100gig for $80. As for titles requiring a HD to play there is nothing saying the Square would not release a version bundled with a HD. Remember the PS2? Saying these kinds of things are impossible shows you simply are too young to comprehend history and business.

why do people have to fght over whether the ps3 is better than the 360 and vise versa? ps3 is the better system, 360 has the better games. which would you want? i kick ass system with two or three good games to play, or a decent system with a boat load of good games to play? i had a ps2 and was a serious fan but then one faithful day i played halo 2 online and it changed my whole mind set. i bought a xbox from a friend, went and got halo 2 with an xbox live subscribtion and i havent looked back since. i really dont care if sony gets good games or not (well i kinda do cuz i dont want you people wasting all that money and an hd-dvd player) but seriously yall sound so stupid when people argue like this. no one on here is making any money off of sony or microsoft so why does it matter?

Ok, Kineticman_a13, Maybe I've been a little to harsh, I'll admit that I've been a sucker a few times in my life, it's one of those live and learn things... no disrespect intended. Companies like Square Enix are great, there games are some of the best, but in the end they don't care about support to Sony, they care about profit...Do you honestly think there willing to lose out on all the extra earnings they could make releasing FFXIII to the XBOX 360 just to help Sony, especially where PS3 sales are so low?...Seems like a dumb move to me. Companies like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo etc...all they care about is making money for there shareholders.

AceCometh

It would be nice if all the Final Fantasy games made their way onto the Xbox 360. I doubt it'll happen, though. Every Japanese person I've talked to said they'd never buy a 360 simply because it's an American made product.

ps3 is lagging in sales, but that is becuz it doesn't have that many good games rite now. but that will change with the upcoming ps3 exclusives like lair, heavenly sword, mgs4, ratchet, ffxiii, ffxiii versus, killzone 2, uncharted, and more. After 2007 and the release of ffxiii, i can see an up in sales for the ps3, especially if kingdom hearts 3, etc r announced exclusively for the ps3, which is highly probable. And just as an extra note in response to monkey_man22, yes the xbox 360 is selling a lot, but if im not mistaken the ps2 is selling more than even the xbox 360 and the wii, which means a lot. a last-gen system by sony beating the other next-gen consoles!!!
