Walk into Chow Down Pet Supplies, and you may leave with more than dog food. This Grand Junction store features a cozy cat room, where needy kitties live until they find forever homes.

“Lots of people come in to hang out with the cats,” Chow Down Pet Supplies co-owner Joe Bush said. “Volunteers come every day, too.”

Cats aren't for sale through Chow Down however. Adoption applications are handled by CLAWS Rescue and Adoption Center volunteers. CLAWS, which stands for Cat's League and Assistance of the Western Slope, is a no-kill, cat-only nonprofit. It cares for homeless felines through volunteers, partnerships, donations and fostering efforts.

“CLAWS does its best to help all cats in need in the Grand Valley,” the CLAWS website said. “Many cats are rescued from agencies such as Mesa County Animal Services that may become overcrowded. Some cats are surrendered by people who may have to move or who have lost their homes. Litters of kittens are brought to us by owners who have not spayed (or) neutered their own cats. And some are simply found, frightened, hungry and in need. They are brought to us as their last chance at finding a loving home.”

According to Bush, six adoptable cats currently live at Chow Down, along with three shop cats.

“There's a lot of cats at the shelter,” he said. “As soon as one is adopted, another is brought over.”

CLAWS adoption fees vary, depending on the cat's age. Kittens under 6 months old are $80, and cats are $65. Prior to adoption, all cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed and tested for FeLV/FIV.

Chow Down's partnership with CLAWS began three years ago, Bush said. Its cat room is connected to the animal-supply shop, and it features a variety of toys, cat beds and places for volunteers to sit.

“It's bright, pretty, they get to play, and people get to visit them,” CLAWS president Valerie Mazrin said. “It's priceless, the fact that Chow Down lets us keep our kitties over there. ... Chow Down is so good to our cats. They even supply the food for us.”

According to Mazrin, CLAWS has more than 200 cats currently under volunteer care, and many of them are available for adoption.

“We have every shape, color and size (cat),” she said. “We would love more foster homes and we always need volunteers.”

CLAWS cats can be found at Chow Down Pet Supplies, PetSmart, Petco and Kitty Condos in Grand Junction, or at the CLAWS shelter.
