Splinter Cell: Blacklist pushed back to August

Ubisoft action shooter originally targeted to launch this spring now expected late summer.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist has been given a release date of August 20, Ubisoft has announced. It was originally due to come out this spring.

A new trailer for the game on IGN lists that the game will be available for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

In Splinter Cell: Blacklist, a group of "rogue nations" have become fed up with the United States' armed presence in their countries. To combat this, they devised "The Blacklist," a series of terrorist attacks aimed at the United States.

Development on Splinter Cell: Blacklist is being led by Ubisoft Toronto, with Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Shanghai assisting.

Seems like Conviction all over again. At least make good use of the delay to bring Ironside back and leave the mocap to Eric Johnson.

The loss of the amazing Michael Ironside not being the voice actor is enough to make me not want to play this. Unless its some well, put together splinter cell. Looks to be a double agent, to where I just have no interest in it. Eric Johnson just doesn't work for me.

Can't wait I enjoyed all SC games this one looks like a hybrid of conviction and the old series for me that's awesome.

Of course, it's a Tom Clancy game. Future Solider was pushed back like 4 times...

Sam Fisher is a pawn for terrorist, elite banking cartels. Solid Snake is so much cooler and fights with more honor.

corteztheg
corteztheg

@Dredcrumb9 Actually Solid Snake has always been the pawn in every mgs game, he is never given full details about his mission and he is always used by his enemies and allies. Sam fisher on the other hand does not have that many back stabbing handlers ( except for the team behind Conviction and Blacklist )

They need to make Splinter Cell stealthy again and not a 3rd person CoD

Ubi is preparing "new" SC that looks almost identical to the old one. I gues this is called CoD syndrome.

SC is getting older every release. Last one was not bad but too easy and too old looking.

@Faster_Bill  I'm sorry you think this is identical from the old one? Conviction is hammered by old splinter cell fans for taking the franchise in a completely different direction. This game is vastly different from the old one.

People bitch about the stupidest crap. The game looks amazing, has a great story, an amazing combat system, and incredible voice acting, but change the guy's hair and nobody will play it. It's a good thing President Obama didn't grow an Afro before his second term election.

@dogman7  "looks amazing"

Not bad I guess. But not amazing either.

"great story"

America fuck yeah all terrorists please die sure is a great story. The first 3 or 4 games didn't have this much annoying jingoism. The first 3 even had a little bit of a cool post-cyberpunk vibe. Don't remember much about 5 as it was shit anyway.

"amazing combat system"

Mark and execute (press x to win) is a shitty mechanic. Also Splinter Cell is a stealth game. Amazing combat isn't really what I'm looking forward to.

"incredible voice acting"

Sam used to have an iconic voice so it's understandable that people get upset. For this one I'm willing to give the new VA a chance. We'll see how it goes.

"hair"

Wait are we talking about DmC?

dogman7

@raweewat @dogman7 It was meant to be in the DMC article comments, sorry. But I will say SC has always been an amazing franchise, if people aren't going to play it because Michael Ironside isn't playing Sam Fisher, which is how it sounds, then it's their loss, not mine. As for the whole mark and execute thing, yeah, it's a little cheesy, but I'm glad they;'re catering to every playstyle in Blacklist and not putting one above the other. I think it's shaping up to be a great game and can't wait to play it. Also, spies Vs. mercs!!!

People bitch about the stupidest crap. The game got an 8.0, has a great story, amazing combat, and top notch voice acting... But won't play it because the guy's hair is different. Good thing President Obama didn't grow an afro before his second term election.

Dang it. I was really excited about the new Splinter Cell game. I hope they don't delay for as long a Conviction was delayed for...

Maybe they've received word that the new Xbox will launch in August and they want to release this game simultaneously on current and next-gen systems! Highly unlikely, but that would be so sweet.

Key words "action-shooter", Splinter Cell is no more, I loved it as a stealth game but now it's an action-shooter?  Far Cry is a good FPS that can be played completely as a stealth game, hopefully this one will too.

From what I've seen, looks a lot like MGS guns of the patriot, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but if it looked more like SC chaos theory it would be more attractive to me.

thenephariouson
thenephariouson

@jagcivtec

I have no doubt that this will offer a 'Free Form' experience where you can choose how to play, like Conviction which also offers this type of play, on the one hand you may decide to be stealthy, but are then able to simply go all guns blazing completely on the fly if required.

I love this kind of gameplay as it gives me options.

TheAgingGamer
TheAgingGamer like.author.displayName 1 Like

@thenephariouson @jagcivtec I agree. Conviction would have been phenomenal if we could have played it stealthily and then gone back and played it with a completely different approach later. Conviction actually was a really good game, it just wasn't a really good Splinter Cell.

gufberg

The premise is hilarious.

"Rogue countries unite to fight armed presence in their nations with terrorism"

Uhm heads up to devs: Thats not called terrorism. That is called warfare. Armed action against the US does not automatically = terror.

TheAgingGamer
TheAgingGamer like.author.displayName 1 Like

@gufberg It depends on how it's orchestrated, really. Some distinguishing factors between warfare and terrorism:
Targeting military vs. civilians
Open conflict vs. secretive attacks to incite fear

If the "rogue countries" are not declaring war but rather orchestrating attacks on US citizens in order to inflict fear, leading them to demand the gov't withdraw troops from foreign territories, then I'd say it's accurate to call it terrorism. Which actually seems like a good plot, because countries that have a US military presence would find it very difficult to wage open war against them, and would likely see greater results using the secretive approach.

Edit: Let's just hope the gameplay does the plot justice and gives us the stealth mechanics back.

gufberg
gufberg

@TheAgingGamer Yes ofcourse. Terrorism means the death of civilians. I was working under the assumption that this'd be our standard 'evil terrorists vs good americans' kind of plot in which the storyline doesn't really distinguish between what terrorism actually is and how they portray it.

As far as our current information goes this plot just seems so terribly generic that they may actually be shooting for something Call of Duty esque. That would be pretty bad.

TheAgingGamer
TheAgingGamer like.author.displayName 1 Like

@gufberg Um, yes. That would be a travesty lol. But Ubisoft is not an American company, and they haven't been hesitant to draw attention to the US's flaws in the past. This idea has been explored in ACIII as well as many previous Splinter Cell games.

In CT, Doug Shetland (a long time friend of Sam's) has turned against the US because of its corruption. DA explores the activities of domestic terrorists seeking not to destroy the US, but to start a chain of events intended to end US corruption. Conviction, again, explored themes of US corruption. In all of these games, Fisher has not been fighting against the organizations' ideas, but rather their methods.

I would imagine that we will continue to see internal struggles with Sam while he fights against these groups who he may partially agree with. In my opinion, Ubisoft is not nearly as guilty of producing games loaded with pro-US propaganda as companies like Activision or EA.
