Epic Mickey 2 sold 270K in US - Report

Disney sequel Power of Two reportedly sells 1 million fewer copies in United States during comparable period of time.

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two came up well short of the sales milestone set by the 2010 original, according to a new Los Angeles Times report. Citing NPD data provided by a person not authorized to share the information publicly, the paper states Epic Mickey 2 sold 270,000 units in North America by the end of 2012. Over a comparable period of time, the original Epic Mickey sold 1.3 million copies in the region, the report states.

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two scored generally fair reviews upon release in November. GameSpot's review praised the game's story and surprises, but lamented its jumping mechanics and cooperative partner Oswald, among other things.

Series developer Junction Point Studios founder Warren Spector said in May 2012 that Epic Mickey was planned as a four-game series, though no future games from the studio have been announced yet.

Disney just yesterday announced its new Disney Infinity game/platform, which will span consoles, PC, and mobile devices. The game will make use of real-world toys, much in the same way that Activision's Skylanders series does, and will ship during June 2013.

Activision is not afraid of the competition, saying it is confident Skylanders will remain the top seller in the market.

Im honestly not suprised, this must be one of the worst games I have played in a long long time.

The platforming is utterly broken and is so heavily against Mickey that it becomes a chore to do yet Oswald with his hovering ability makes it to easy.

The level design is terribly generic and just looks like they took superior games like Rayman and Banjo Kazooie and tried to copy it, boss fights are hell, you are never told what works on them and as the bosses do not have visible life bars, you can sit there for almost an hour trying to figure out if you are doing it correctly.

Just generally trying to negotiate Wasteland is a pain in the ass, you are never told where to go or what things do and most your time will be spent wandering aimlessly painting objects in the vain hope you stumble upon the next checkpoint.

Things were made easier through co-op play but Oswald is so terribly underpowered and has useless abilities that cannot kill standard enemies without Mickeys help that whoever plays as him will be quickly bored and frustrated. AI Oswald is an absolute joke and seems to have the IQ of a 6 year old jar of mayonaise.

Game is turd, the faults with this game are inexcusable now and always have been with platform games. If this game had come out 10 years ago it would still be utter turd.

The only Disney licenced games you can ever trust is when they put their licence to a Lego game it seems...

Disney games were great in Genesis, SNES era. In KH, Disney characters fought "the darkness" inside every people's hearts but still rang true to Disney story formulas of "good x evil". Now, Disney games are just disappointments...

I played the first one and I saw some creative and nostalgia-inspiring use of the Disney license; however, the overall the gameplay was extremely bland and broken at times. When the second game came out and the reviews stated these issues had not been addressed... well... *skip*

Crap game sells like crap.

How are people still surprised by this simple fact?

At least a couple of popular commentators awarded this game "Worst Game of the Year."

I never heard one positive thing about the first game. Regardless of how many units it sold, when everyone speaks very negatively about the game, how do you then expect a sequel to do well?

I wanted to play the first game but I've just had crap going on.  So yeah, I kind of didn't play the second one either.

The game sucks,  there won't be a third one and Warren Spector's career is over.

Warren Spector, I understand if you want to make a Mickey Mouse game, but we could use a veteran in RPG's right now.

@SicoWolf @theHydra014 Though he was in, System Shock, Dues Ex, a few Ultimas (not the god awful Ulitma 9), and Theif DP with DS. He has made a few of the greatest PC games ever, or most important PC games. I would like him back to his bread and butter.

@theHydra014 @SicoWolf It seems Mr Spector is not interested anymore in the traditional RPG's he used to create brilliantly before. It is a pity, because I'm thinking if he did go back to it, and considered Kickstarter, he might get a lot of pledges, and it would be really popular, like Project Eternity.

Epic Mickey 2 didn't have the advertising behind it.  I recall the first game getting a surprising amount of commercials but I don't recall even seeing an Epic Mickey 2 commercial.  Also, Epic Mickey 2 didn't have the same critical reception as the first game did.  I'm not saying the first game was fantastic but Epic Mickey 2 is like the video game equivalent of a direct to DVD movie sequel.

The Gamespot editors, particularly Eddie think they are slick.  Notice how he doesn't even mention that the original was only sold on one platform--the Wii-and sold very well.  However, when the sequel was released on multiple platforms, like Gamespot's beloved 360/PS3,  it doesn't do as well.  If this failure was Wii specific, Gamespot would be all over it specifically naming the platform.  The favoritism on this site is ridiculous and needs to be called out.  I read this same story on another game site, and it least the writer there was very clear about the previous outing being a Wii only title and very successful.   I have the current gaming platforms out now and I enjoy them all, so I'm not biased.  I'm just saying....

You know, I like the concept of the Wasteland and Oswald's return in all, but I will agree on the gameplay flaws that lost the potential it deserved. Although I think the copies sold may be inaccurate because I stumbled upon a website tracking on games sold. The tally is actually a bit higher than what the article is saying, but it's still not enough to claim it as a success yet,

Here's the link: http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=Epic+mickey+2

Here's the current sales:

Wii: 440k (US); 580k (Worldwide)

X360: 170k (US); 250k (Worldwide)

PS3: 110k (US); 200k (Worldwide)

WiiU: 70k (US); 80k (Worldwide)

Total: 790k (US); 1.11m (Worldwide)

Yeah, what a wasted potential and luck to make the series epic in its own way. I think this source is claiming an unannounced report to influence the unsuccessful ploy on EM2, but I think this is mostly on December. This chart I found has the current numbers up to January. Hope this changes their minds, or still stay the same to claim how bad the sales were.

Bartz77

@Kureisan23I would trust these numbers more so than anything on vgchartz (which is a highly unreliable site), NPD numbers are actually official where vgchartz is just a guess.

@Bartz77 Yeah good point. Either way, the sales would not be a success, unless further updates arrive in later months. Though I was a bit skeptical on whether copies sold were for all platforms, or just on one console.

Hurvl

@raahsnavj "Warren Spector said in May 2012 that Epic Mickey was planned as a four-game series", though no future games from the studio have been announced yet." I wouldn't be surprised if there were no future games made, but then again, sometimes companies make more games despite better judgment it seems. Not my genre anyway, so I don't care either way how this franchise turns out, but anything that warps beloved characters (like American McGee's Alice) is fun. For that reason, I would have liked Epic Mickey to be better and get better sales.

I played the demo and I liked it but when I got to the part where I had to use Oswald to jump a simple gap I couldn't do it, I'd hit the buton at the right time then fall like a rock then have to climb back up again....

When the full game was released I thought about getting it but the review mentioned poor jumping mechanics and poor Oswald AI so I just ignored it....

Fandango_Letho
Fandango_Letho

Warren Spector is still a brilliant designer but it's quite sad that his involvement and ideas are far from matching the actual quality of the gameplay. Broken jumping animations and mechanics, deficient and barely playable single player due to Oswald and overall uninteresting side-scrolling stages that are once again forced unto you. The whole paint/thinner mechanic is, once again, a great idea on paper, but its execution leading to karma paths is botched and ultimately useless.

I think the premise of Epic Mickey is great, since we all love Disney, somewhere deep down. Unfortunately, I doubt Warren Spector and Junction Point are the right devs to make it happen. These folks seriously need to up their ante, because their games have proven to be quite flat.

FAIL_TR0LL

Please, Disney. You have Warren Spector, one of the industry's greatest video game designers working on games like this?! No offense but come on already!

You own Star Wars now. Collaborate with EA and Bioware to allow Junction Point Studios to work on a proper "Knight of the Old Republic III" for next generation consoles. Or at least allow him to create a Deus-Ex-style RPG set in the Star Wars universe. Anything!! Just sad to see such talent going to waste.

@DrRockso87 I agree, get Warren to work on a Star Wars game in the same style as Deus Ex mixed with Dark Forces: Jedi Academy/Jedi Outcast. It'd be perfect, and to be honest a dream game by many Star Wars gamers.

@Dazza102 @DrRockso87  Thing is you two complain about Warren working on those games, but the thing is, he WANTED to, thing is he LOVES Disney and especially Mickey.  Only thing he forgot was, no one else loves Mickey anymore.  I'd love to see him go back to his producer roles from the 90's when he was making awesome games like Ultima Underworld, Crusader, System Shock and Deus Ex.
