NASA hopes Hubble telescope will remain operational through 2018

Hubble

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is one of NASA's greatest achievements — for more than 20 years, the telescope has orbited the earth and provided us with some of the most stunning space images you could hope to see. At the 221st meeting of American Astronomical Society, NASA reiterated its plans to keep Hubble operating as long as it can. "Hubble will continue to operate as long as its...

'Clouds': an interactive documentary shot on Kinect proves the future of video is not at CES

Jonathan Minard & James George (RGB+D)

The camera of the future is not at CES — it's at Eyebeam, an art and technology incubator in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City, where two artists-in-residence are currently shooting a documentary that's probably better described as interactive software than a feature film.

Ever since their first meeting at a coding conference in Pittsburgh, James George and Jonathan Minard have been perfecting their experimental filmmaking technique, which uses a DSLR + Kinect hybrid image capture process in conjunction with custom editing software. The results are two-fold: a distinct set of stuttered images that can be spatially manipulated by the viewer, and a free dev kit that allows anyone with the right equipment to play along — like Hollywood 3D's dirtier, open-source cousin made into a video game.

Panasonic brings Wi-Fi, NFC to ruggedized and long-zoom Lumix point-and-shoot cams

Panasonic Lumix

Wi-Fi sharing is quickly becoming status quo when it comes to compact point-and-shoot cameras, and Panasonic is the latest to bring that functionality to select models of its 2013 Lumix lineup. The company has introduced the TS5, another entrant in its family of ruggedized cameras that features a 16.1-megapixel sensor, 1080p video recording, and integrated NFC. Aside from the built-in networking, the TS5 offers impressive resistance to the elements: Panasonic says it's waterproof to a depth...

Canon's Power Shot N cranks out random, quirky spins on your photos

Gallery Photo: Canon's Power Shot N cranks out quirky spins on your photos

Canon’s PowerShot N is a quirky, square point-and-shoot with touchscreen controls and 8x optical zoom lens. The specs aren’t anything crazy, it has a 12-megapixel sensor and a top ISO of 6400, but what sets it apart is something called Creative Shot — you can take a single photo (there’s no shutter button, so you’ll need to tap on the touchscreen), but the Power Shot N will randomly crank out five different spins on it, varying...

Snappgrip turns your iPhone into a point-and-shoot camera

snappgrip iphone controller

Snappgrip is a UK-based Kickstarter campaign with a simple goal: help iPhone users take one-handed photos. The campaign's eponymous product, on display here at CES this week, is essentially a bluetooth controller that slides on to the back of an iPhone, effectively turning it into a simple point-and-shoot camera. The Snappgrip is still in prototype mode and didn't exactly perform up to expectations during the time we spent with it, but the...
