Newcomer Xenepp used Propellerheads' tasty new Reason 2.0 exclusively for this hip-hoppish laid-back electronica piece off the Sonic CD OST. Xenepp aka Joel Whybrow points out that this is the Collision Chaos music from the PAL version of the game. For those that haven't played Sonic CD, see if you can track down a copy on ebay or something, as it's entirely playable on the excellent GENS emulator (Win32), and is one of the best games in the Sonic series. When now-defunct Gamefan magazine originally reviewed the Japanese release, they gave it straight 100's - afterwards, when the US release came out with modified (but in my opinion still amazing) music from Spencer Nielsen, they re-reviewed it and gave it marks in the eighties. I for one think either version is a fantastic platformer with depth, variety, and a memorable soundtrack, with perhaps a slight edge to the Japanese release. Nielsen actually got The Corrs to do some of the vocals, which I thought worked very well with his pieces. This mix features warm analog pads, comp piano chords, a tasty, unobstrusive-yet-funky drum loop, and silky-smooth analog leads with some slick portamento. It's definitely more of a groove-out piece, like the original, and doesn't develop as much as it could have (would like to have heard Xenepp do more interpretation) but what's here is quality, with the layered breakbeats (complete with stutter effect on some fills) and overall mix very full and developed. Fade out ending is disappointing and a bit too abrupt - I don't *mind* fades for ends, like some do, but methinks it should be a bit more gradual than this. Aside from needing a smidge more variety and a tad slower fade out, though, this is a good re-visualization of the piece that shows off some depth on both Xenepp and Reason 2.0's part.

It starts off interesting and original, but it doesn't really go anywere with it. It's like the melody is chasing itself around in circles inside a fog bank.
As it stands, this mix is a good start, but it doesn't do enough to be worthwile.

The vocals are strange, and mixed strangely, but they fit really well into the texture of the overall soundscape. Nice job on that.
Repetativeness is apparent here, but such is the nature of the mix. As background music, which it seemed to be more intended for, it's fine.

It's cool that you decided to give it a try to the least, it's a very smooth and at some points jazzy, but since most of the samples have been grinded into a homogen soup, there aren't any elements that stands out and gets this thing going.
But not bad, not bad at all, especially since you just wanted to try it out for the first time. If you focus some more on your work, stuff like this can become awesome, but as I and Abadoss said, this is excellent music to have in the background while working or just 'chillin', whatever word that makes more sense.
Nice and groovy stuff, well done.

Anyways the mix at hand is beautifully smooth and sets a nice fantasy-like atmospheric mood...(Yes I said that :))

I do like it for it's relaxed and light feel. I have to say good job to Xenepp. Though, I would work to make the piece stand out a little more. Try to add something to avoid making people want to fall asleep. It would make great in-game music, though...

This is a very interesting piece here by Xenepp with lots of atmosphere. I would have to say that the most interesting thing about this piece is the drum beat. Besides that its very plain, lots of synths, pads, and strings. Guess I'm just looking for something a little more exciting. Good work Xenepp.
