Harmony of a HunterMetroid Prime 3: Corruption

Newcomer Christopher Foss, aka Pyro Paper Planes, sends us a beautiful & graceful solo piano arrangement of Metroid Prime 3, off of Harmony of a Hunter:

"One aspect I enjoy about a remix is how it can not only stir old memories but also how it can put them under a new light. When I was invited to contribute to the "Harmony of a Hunter" project, one of my goals was to produce a song that completely contrasted the style of the original song. I decided to choose one of the more recent popular tracks in the series, Samus vs. Rundas.

...I went through several iterations for the introduction. One version even sounded very similar to JigginJonT's "The Flood Plain", a piece that was very influential to me. I ended up restructuring the first three chords of the original theme. At the beginning, I had included the second phrase of the battle in the arrangement. I could never quite get it to fit with the rest of the song. It just didn't work with the emotions of the rest of the song. I ended up with this little improvised part that I loved so much, that I decided to replace it in the final song.

And there you have it. I present a song that's dedicated to the memory of Rundas. Enjoy."

We've seen a lot of HoH tracks being posted from artists both familiar & new, which is a testament to its overall quality. The folks at Shinesparkers are actually working on an expansion project, 101% Run, which promises even more great Metroid mixes - read more at http://www.shinesparkers.net/harmonyofahunter/. What strikes me about this arrangement & performance is the delicacy and dynamics that Christopher employs - DragonAvenger writes:

"I've gotta say, I was not expecting a delicate piano remix to come from that source. It was a pleasant surprise, and I think there's a ton of good things you've done here. The expression in the piano is really good, and it really conveys a feeling of sadness or regret, or a remembrance of someone. I will agree that there are times when things are a little light on source, but I think as a whole it is presented well, and this was a great listen."

halc adds:

"yeah, the arrangement and performance were so emotive and heartfelt, I loved it. no qualms here, this is a beautiful piece."

I love the final note, left hanging in isolation over an abyss of silence. This is a very reflective, pensive arrangement, which are actually more common qualities with solo piano mixes in particular, but PPP has his own style & nuance that he brings to the table. Great debut, great contribution to Harmony of a Hunter, and I've no doubt we'll be hearing more off the album AND more from Christopher in the future!

This track always gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes. This really is fantastic. Great job.

Melting Sun. The name makes me think of warm butter because it's also molten and yellow. This song has only 1 instrument. Simple piano melodies are personally not my favorite, but I respect them and they do have their merits. In a most surrealistic fashion, this track evokes an image of eating nothing but warm butter for breakfast.

It's really great to see Melting Sun approved by OCRemix, it truly is one of the most outstanding tracks on the album in my opinion. Christopher has done a great job at re-imagining the tense and epic Rundas battle as a gentle, piano piece, almost reflective of the sadness that follows through his death, corrupted by Dark Samus. The contrast between the original and Pyro Paper Plane's approach is vast, but welcome.
I've worked with many musicians on both Harmony of a Hunter albums, but Chris stands out a little more than most of them. I consider Chris a friend. I've known him for many years and i've seen just how far he has come, and it makes me really happy to see him getting some recognition here at OCRemix. Keep your eyes on this guy OCR, he's not done yet!
Christopher will be providing three tracks to the upcoming Harmony of a Hunter: 101% Run expansion, which will be released next month. Thanks OCR for your continued support for HoaH, it means a lot.

Wonderful opening. It's genteel and beautiful; it definitely pulls the listener in. Wish I could hear this with a fuller piano sound, but nice work putting a sophisticated spin on a pretty intense battle theme!
