Review: Ridge Racer 3D

Review: Ridge Racer 3D photo

Ridge Racer 3D is one of two racing games available for the 3DS at launch, and since the other one is part of GameLoft's Asphalt series, there's really only one choice.

Ridge Racer 3D's overall goal seems quite clear -- to use the visual perspective of the racing genre to be the prime example of the 3DS' 3D gimmickry. It almost seems like creating a decent racing game is a secondary goal, so it's quite some pleasant surprise that Ridge Racer is quite fun, too.

Ridge Racer 3D (3DS)
Developer: Namco Bandai
Publisher: Namco Bandai

Released: March 22, 2011
MSRP: $39.99

Fans of the Ridge Racer series can expect a mostly familiar experience, with 3D mostly taking popular courses from past games and sticking to the franchise's arcade racing roots. For the most part, Namco Bandai's 3DS launch effort is a fairly standard, basic racing game that does exactly what it needs to do in order to be solid, if not outstanding.

New additions to the series come in the form of some fresh car selections, and a range of perks that can be purchased before each race. Perks are bought using points earned from successful races and take the form of extra nitrous bursts and automatic rocket boosts. The perks make for a cool new addition, but it would have been great to have more choices and unique abilities to choose from.

The races themselves are damn fun with some nicely designed, if aesthetically similar, tracks that put the focus on skillful cornering and drifting. After a while, the races seem to feel identical, but for quick racing on the go, this is a terrific choice helped by satisfying, responsive controls that work really well with the 3DS' button layout and new analog nub.

There's a variety of predictable race modes to choose from. You've got Grand Prix, which allows you to unlock new tracks and cars, standard one-off races, automatically generated "quick tours" that create games based on how long you want to play, and the obligatory time attack courses. You can also take advantage of Streetpass to duel against ghost racers, although obviously that requires you to be situated in a city of 3DS users who all have Ridge Racer

The biggest disappointment is the lackluster multiplayer section. Ridge Racer 3D supports local play only, with no online component. It feels like a missed opportunity, especially due to the difficulty outside of Japan in getting a local handheld multiplayer session started. For instance, it's logistically impossible for this particular reviewer, since I am the only 3DS owner I know in the State.

At least efforts have been made in the audio/visual department -- but then, that seems to be the main point of the game, so it ought to be good. As expected, the 3D visuals work really well. With 3D turned on, everything has a strange sheen to it, like the cars and environments are made out of glass, but the graphics are still very appealing, with bright, colorful tracks and cars that can be lightly customized with a range of cool paint jobs.

Ridge Racer 3D demonstrates how effective the 3DS' visual effects can be, as rival cars appear in the distance with a deep sense of perspective and passing trees impressively zoom past the camera. A few extra tricks, such as ticker tape hitting the screen before fading away, adds to the visual magic. As impressive as it looks, however, Ridge Racer 3D seems to have a problem with blurriness, moreso than other titles. It's a lot harder to keep the game in focus with 3D turned on, and even when you find your optimum distance and position, there seems to be ghostly images subtly appearing around vehicles and objects. While caught up in a busy race, it's hard to spot, but you will spot it eventually.

As always, the game has a soundtrack full of bangin' tunes and phat beats, and the perpetually upbeat announcers constantly gibber and commentate on your progress. Your mileage may vary when it comes to the sound -- some of you will find it endearing, others will simply be annoyed.

Ridge Racer 3D is a damn good game, and well worth considering if you're finding the current range of titles disappointing. As with all launch titles, the game doesn't feel quite so fleshed out as it could have, and it's clear that the game is ticking boxes to meet standards, rather than go that extra mile to produce something great. Nevertheless, it's a fun game that feels good to control, looks impressive and delivers some classic arcade racing that's perfect for quick bursts of portable play.

Can't go too wrong with that.

THE VERDICT

7.5 /10
Good: A solid game that definitely has an audience. Might lack replay value, could be too short or there are some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun. Check out more reviews or the Destructoid score guide.

Yes, I know I'm...PREDICTABO!

Oh man you guys are making it hard to hold out for a 3DSXL. Might be time to start checking my couch for extra coins, and just buy the current 3DS. I loves Ridge Racer!
I'm really surprised at all the high scores this is getting. When I played it at one of Nintendo's events in London, it was an absolute shambles. Glad it sounds like they've tidied it up.
Must...Not...Buy...3DS...

But my normal DS Lite's hinge is loose, making me have to hold it up manually.

So, let's make that a TOTALLY valid reason for buying a 3DS.
Its a damn good time.
I agree wholeheartedly with this review and score. I bought my 3DS primarily because I dig 3d as a gimmick in portable gaming (ie like the unfortunate Virtual Boy), and I feel like this game succeeds even beyond Pilot Wings Resort in presentation of that gimmick as well as provide a relatively lengthy, predictably solid 'campaign' unlike Pilot Wings.
Yay for OPTIONAL street pass features. So glad they didn't do something like "meet four other ridge race owners to unlock this car!"
This is one of my favorite titles for the 3DS. The 3D works great (especially in 1st person mode) and the game handles like a charm.
7.5 is about right. I have Asphalt as well, and I actually like Asphalt better.
I never thought I would see a day where Jim Sterling was going to be kinder to a game than I'm going to be... I was trying to get some images together before I posted my review in the CBlogs.
I wish I lived near someone to play with. Oh well SSF has plenty of online for me, great game though.
Baron is a Chocobo. A Chocobo wearing glasses and DRIVING A CAR WHAT IS THIS
Ok I live in Belfast walk around as much as possible and still only 4 Mii's and 1 ghost RR racer from day one.....what's going on people? Online I've had a few SF4 duel's but.. come on nintendo get the games out..back to black op's then.
Its definitely a fun game.
I'm trying really hard to wait until the obligatory 3DS Lite/Heavy(XL) comes out...

And being poor ensures I will even if I crack. If only I found a $250 bill on the ground (+ SSFIV 3DS).
=/
Definitely interested to hear the thoughts of people who hated it. Didn't expect anyone to have strong negative opinions at all. Doesn't seem the kinda game for it.
It's a fun game and I actually like it more than Street Fighter (mostly because as much as I love playing it on the go, it's really more fun with proper arcade controls). Pilotwings is truely incredible though and I've logged well over 10 hours on it and that will easily be doubled by the time I'm finished with it. I can't believe how much BS there is about Pilotwings being short, if you go for perfect (as all people should) it easily has as much content as the previous Pilotwings titles.
My beef is more along the lines of the campaign being a step backwards from what they did with RR7 on PS3, the wonky collision detection (bumper cars), and more appropriately, the horrible horrible AI. It's not completely terrible but it is on the lower rung of Ridge Racer games, saddling next to Ridge Racer 64, Ridge Racer Turbo, and Ridge Racer 6. But keep in mind this is coming from a long time fan of the franchise so a bit of it IS likely some sacred cow syndrome going on. But the rubberbanding AI is horrible even by mario kart standards.
I got this, SSF4 and Pilotwings at launch and enjoy Ridge Racer the most. The controls are solid, the 3D effects nice and the soundtrack rocks. However, the lack of traffic and recycled tracks from previous games hold it back from greatness. It's a nice launch title but more than anything it makes me want a Burnout for the system. Crash mode in 3D would be stellar
Shadow Wars FTW
I JUST got Ridge Racer today. I've never played a Ridge Racer game before, so from the reviews I've read, this is going to be all new to me.

I also have Steel Diver (oddly satisfying in a way I cannot put my finger on), SSF4, and Ghost Recon Shadow Wars.

I need more 3DS friends. . . . I hate being the only one in town with one.
I find it funny that people are waiting for the "lite" version of thee 3DS. It's going to be at the very least a year and a half. I rather have it now(which I do), and then wait for the 3DSi. That seems like a better idea to me. But whatever, if you can wait, go right ahead. There is no way I could have.
@ Dakilazical -

I agree with you, the more I play Ridge Racer and the further I get/ faster the races become (now working my way through advanced circuit mode), I can't help but imagine how wonderful it would be to smash those aggressive cars a la Burnout.
@Proxx

With how lackluster the catalog is right now, I don't mind waiting. My friend has one and I can just borrow it for Zelda.

The graphic seems like a its a ripoff from the "Speed Racer" series.

If your a fan psicologo of this genre you will not be disappointed. And at 10 bucks it would be foolish not to pick this up.
