We loved newcomer Eric Jadi's debut mix, so we emailed him back and asked him for a bit of background info. He writes:
"My name is Eric Jadi. I'm 30 years old and I am Dutch. From a young age my life has been revolving around music and computers. I've played the piano since I was 4, studied for a few years at the Amsterdam conservatory (classical piano) before I decided that I didn't have the proper motivation. I've always been a game enthusiast although I never really got into consoles (my first console is my Wii!). Instead I grew up with my C64, MSX, an A500 and later and A1200. After that it's been PC all the way for me.
I've always made my own music as a hobby. Started out improvising on the piano, then I got into synthesizers and computing. In the past I've done my share of tracking (on the Amiga), MIDI sequencing. Nowadays I just use my PC, Cakewalk Sonar, a slew of VSTs, an Audiofire ASIO external audio interface and a MIDI controller keyboard.
Although I remember playing Marvel vs Capcom in the arcade a few times I mostly played it on my PC and I've always loved the Chun Li and Morrigan themes. Especially the Chun li theme I thought was pretty clever, creating nice harmonies around a restricted melody. If it's received well, I might think of making some more, it's been fun."
I added all those links in there myself, by the way; please click on them and legitimate my existence. This is essentially also a Street Fighter II mix, since Chun-Li's theme from MvC is an arrangement of the original, but the vs. theme is what inspired Eric, and we're glad it did. Mr. Jadi slowed the source down to create a funkier groove and really capitalized on a deep, moving bass line and round, solid dance groove. There's a break halfway through where I was a little afraid things were just gonna loop verbatim, but the second iteration has a nice sans-drum passage followed by a oscillator-sync'd lead synth solo, so crisis averted.
Really accessible, enjoyable Chun-Li mix with solid production - what's not to like? Great work from veteran gamer Eric Jadi, who reminds me of my own age with his bio rife with vintage computer gaming. Of couse, I had a Commodore 128, which had TWICE the memory of the C64 - a whopping eighth of a megabyte! Good times, back then, and good times now; here's hoping we hear more like this from Eric!
