How about some nice, refreshing Essence of Lime? ...sounds like it COULD be a beverage OR a hand lotion, but as most of you already know, it's an excellent Oracle of Ages album you should check out. We've already posted several mixes from its citrusy offerings, and now Flexstyle (aka Mike Birch) follows up his debut Dark Cloud 2 ReMix with one of his own contributions to the album:
"This is a very dark and cold drum'n'bass track (a genre that OCR seems to be sadly lacking...hmm...), as this part of the game apparently takes place in a cave of some sort? I wouldn't know, sadly, as I've never played it. Strangely enough, that seems to be the case with almost every game track I remix...ah well, I digress. I tried to give the already-spooky track a serious jolt of adrenaline while making it every bit as creepy as possible. 'Nuff said. Hope y'all enjoy it!"
Yeah, this be sum good music for Halloween or a similary dark & sinister occasion of your choice; in addition to the disturbed, cavernous chromaticism of its melodic content, the artist has packed in some biting, tweaked beats. OA has this mix's number:
"When this started out I was a little skeptical, as that snare is silly weak, but it was one of those "gotcha" moments as the song gradually evolved into something a lot more badass. There is some good variation on the theme to keep it interesting in several spots, but it seemed like this was really being driven by the percussion, and though the song itself is short, there is a reasonable amount of interest based on such a tiny source track for this to be passable for me."
It's definitely all about the drums, and some of the stuttering (not audio, compositional) snare rolls/builds towards the end really enjoy the limelight. Get it? Because it's lime? Vinnie adds:
"I dug this overall, and thought the approach was fine because of how original the backing track was. The soundscape was hellish and the off-kilter Moblin melody suited it."
A smart, tight, dark, & invigoratingly percussive take on the source material from Flexstyle!
The distorted drums in the back add to the melodic scenery even more.
Once it all goes high energy it's like you're being chased around a labyrinth by a demon.
...
Or I've just got an overactive imagination. Heh
Either way, this ReMix is frightening... and that's exactly why I love it. ;-)

The song itself is nice, a great take on the source. Memorable too; I haven't heard it in a while, honestly, but it comes to mind rather readily.

Great job here!

Arrangement-wise it does tend to rely on the first four measures a lot, but there's a lot of variety placed in with the percussion/sfx building and all the strong synth pad manipulations to further amplify this mood - signs that Flexstyle's production skills are really shaping him up to be a prominent face amongst OCR. One can almost envision the calamity for the Great Moblin Hideout coming excessively early by this setting.
I may say that people may not get this safe structure though, but for me as long as the substance carries the mix through, then it's a very appropriate contribution towards Ben's Oracle of Ages album. Nice going, and I hope to see you keep advancing with your work on Lime of the Season too :D

This is a pretty awesome, hard-hitting track. The drums are really fun (in a gritty not fun way), and the strange lone melody writhing among the screams makes for a solid nightmarish track.

To Flexstyle: Do you, by any chance, have titles for your two Lime of the Season tracks?
