Apex 2013: Straight to the TopThe King of Fighters XIII

Last but not least, WillRock treats us to some KOFXIII electronica, with synth hero wankery and an FM bassline that would make Yuzo Koshiro proud - shame we couldn't play it for him @ MAG11! Shariq writes:

"Isn't King of Fighters great? It's always had a very classic anime feel to it, in my opinion, sort of perpetually hanging on to that old-school Neo-Geo style. Even the newer games like XIII feature great 2D sprite work! WillRock's mix keeps with that old-school feel with a lot of great chippy and synthy stuff. The piano and polysynth leads remind me a lot of classic PSX/Saturn-era games when game composers discovered Red Book audio but still clung to the classic synth sounds. Funky as all get out."

Larry adds:

"WillRock's KOF13 mix is my new JAM! The YM2612 bassline just takes me back to Road Rash/Revenge of Shinobi for some throwback Genesis-style win."

It's a pretty distinct sound, though I personally associate it more with the DX7 than with any one chip; every other song back in the 80's had a DX7 on it somewhere, and it's one of those few synths where the model name became famous in its own right, like the Minimoog, Roland's D-50, and Korg's M1 & Wavestation. Larry mentioned that this mix sounds like something from Gecko Yamori, who coincidentally mixed KOF96 & KOF2000 back in the day, and I'd tend to agree AND consider that a complement. Beats hit hard, solos spazz out, and DAT BASS is fresh & funky, plus smokin' electric guitar adds just the right amount of rock & non-synthesized texture - great jam, great to see more King of Fighters representation, and a great addition to the Apex 2013 album - enjoy it, and be sure to check out www.apex-series.com for more info on the tournament!

Says it from KOF XIII here.
Glad you enjoyed the mix!

*Bows Low* I stand very much corrected then. I thought I'd heard all of the KOF XIII soundtrack, but I have been mistaken. This IS, in fact, a rendition of Goodbye Esaka that I had not heard before, so thank you for bringing it to my attention. I retract my earlier statement and am grateful you took the time to address the issue.
My statements on the awesomeness of your remix, however, still stand, obviously.

As far as I know, it's only ever been featured in that game, so to call this a KOF XIII remix is, essentially, inaccurate.
And coming from a site all about videogame remixes, I'm a little disappointed that OCRemix staff would overlook a fact like this. But maybe I'm just being nitpicky. Still, I'd hate for people to look for this track and be looking under the wrong game.
Although I will openly claim my error if someone proves me wrong on this. A quick search-just to be sure- seems to favor my argument, however.

Wonderful track, and of one of my favorite songs from the KOF series, which has some awesome music (and is seriously under-represented on OC remix).
Love Willrock's stuff.

The Gecko-Yamori connection is spot on, would fit perfectly in the OST of some future fantasy KoF/SoR cross-over release. Funky, slinky, saxxy.
