Quest for Glory: So You Want to Be a Hero

About time we got some more old-school DOS/PC action!!

jmr brings us our first ReMix of Quest for Glory. While he may never have played the game, I'm sure this instrumental, acoustic-guitar led arrangement will conjure some nostalgia for those who have:

"Like my last submission, this remix has its origins in a compo; in this case FBRC2008 (which makes it just about a year older than my SMG remix). I intended to revise and submit this track for quite some time, and did a bit a work on it in early 2009. It ended up being back-burnered for some time until the point where I forgot about it and, uh, 'misplaced' the project file... d'oh!

Fast forward a full year...I was digging through some old backup discs not long ago and was pleasantly surprised to find a fairly recent revision of the song, sans the live guitar elements (which was not a huge loss; my original takes were pretty horrible). Long story short: I re-recorded the required parts and overhauled the majority of the sequenced parts, resulting in this (much-improved) version. Did I mention that I've never even played the game? :P"

This posted version is actually a re-sub of the revision described above; thanks to pixietricks for picking out some sour notes that weren't intentional and were holding the mix back, which Jeff then fixed. The revised, approved version flows smoother and has the intended grace and peaceful intonation that make it work. Nutritious actually HAS played the game, so let's see what he thinks:

"Didn't hear the original sub, but really enjoying what you've brought to this track. I played through the re-release of heros quest way back in the day. So, for some context, this track is associated with one of the few safe spots to rest outside of the Inn (you don't want to be out a night in the forest unless you're pretty strong).

So you've brought more energy & epicness to the original, but still retained the same mysterious calm the original held. Melodies were nicely played with while still retaining a clear connection to the original. Guitar sounded a bit out of tune, so something to watch out for. Production is overall nice. Guitar & orchestra comes through clearly. Drums are punchy without being overbearing towards the other elements. Heard that wrong note at 2:10 as OA did, but that's the only one I detected."

So perhaps one iffy note still made it through, but Justin's played the game, and he was down with the direction jmr took & the final result, so that seems like a pretty solid endorsement. Always love to see something different, and DOS/PC games are still, even after 12+ years, underrepresented on OCR, relative to the amount of amazing music that was written for them. Props to jmr for helping change that!

I approve of the fact this was not labeled as QFG1
Also this game has a long soundtrack. Why are only 3 tunes listed?

Wow, pretty awesome to get a note from the original composer, it has been 20 years (now THAT is scary....) since QG1 after all, very cool!
But more than that, I am so incredibly happy to see Quest for Glory on the front page, this was one of my brother and I's favorite series growing up and this mix definitely nails the feeling of Erana's Peace perfectly. Thanks for making the mix despite having not played the game, there's a great nostalgic feeling here for those of us who did, and who knows, maybe it will inspire some more mixes from old pc games!

Thank you for your efforts to keep this music alive after so many years. I remember my years composing for Sierra fondly and I am thrilled that folks are still enjoying the creativity and craftsmanship that came from that era. Keep up the good work!

I still don't know what to say... :-)

I love this game and this song and this remix so much, it almost makes my heart hurt. I have so many feelings for this series!

Awesome mix from the criminally underrepresented world of late 80s/early 90s DOS games! (Ultima VII? Anyone? Bueller?) I love me some live elements in a ReMix, and this one has the benefit that the live part is played superbly well.

I really dig this mix. Might even call it.... Glory-ous! I enjoyed this series of games when I was a kid, and I have to say, this remix pays great homage to them. Very well done!

Perfectly describes the weather outside right now.

It's a very mellow, somber acoustic guitar remix. Nice work :-)
