The application period for the Community Foundation Littler Youth Fund grants will close Feb. 1.

District 6 fills vending machines with healthy alternatives

Vending machines in Greeley-Evans School District 6 were refilled over the holidays to look more like the district’s lunch menus.

When high school students and teachers went back to school, they found baked chips, pretzels, whole grain snack bars and nuts for snacking, instead of their high-fat, sugary counterparts.

Hudson inmate found dead in cell

An inmate at Hudson Prison was found dead in his cell Thursday morning.

The Weld County Coroner and the Colorado Department of Corrections are investigating the death of Eddie Angapak, 77, of Alaska. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Weld DA’s Office gives phones to A Woman’s Place

The Weld County District Attorney’s Office has donated 20 cell phones to A Woman’s Place.

Managed through the HopeLine Program, Verizon Wireless provided the phones to give victims of domestic violence a means of communication as they transition to a violence-free life, according to a news release.

UNC graduate to compete in Miss America Jan. 12

Hannah Porter, a 2010 graduate of University of Northern Colorado’s Monfort College of Business, will compete as Miss Colorado in the 86th Miss America Pageant on Saturday.

The public can vote for her to win through Thursday at www.missamerica.org/videocontest, according to a news release from the college.

Greeley man accused of sexually assaulting sleeping boy

Police arrested a Greeley man accused of sexually assaulting a sleeping boy.

Anthony Maurice Neal, 46, was arrested Tuesday after the boy told police Neal had taken a photo of his body without his permission, according to an arrest affidavit. The boy told an officer he found the photo on Neal’s tablet computer, and he had taken a video of the photos. He said he didn’t know how Neal got the photo.

USDA assistance on the way for drought-stricken Colorado farmers

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Wednesday announced that it has made farmers and ranchers eligible for additional Farm Service Agency drought assistance in 43 counties in Colorado, including Weld.

Producers in counties designated as primary or contiguous disaster areas are eligible to be considered for FSA emergency loans.

Free radon test kits available to Weld residents

The Weld County Department of Public Health & Environment is offering free, short-term radon kits while supplies last.

Radon levels in a house typically rise in the winter months because of less ventilation. Long-term radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers and the second-leading cause of lung cancer in smokers, according to a news release from the department.

Search is on for Mrs. Weld County

A search is under way for the 2013 Mrs. Weld County, a married woman who will represent the community in the annual Mrs. Colorado Pageant in May.

According to a news release, Emily Stark, the Colorado director for the Mrs. America Pageant, is seeking a woman living or working in Weld County who has been a Colorado resident for at least six months and is married during the time of competition to represent the county at the state level.

Man with samurai sword on Weld’s most wanted list

Weld County Sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday night arrested a 31-year-old man after talking him out of a Greeley house, where he was seen earlier with a samurai sword.

Ryan Yates was on Weld County’s top-10 most wanted list, Tim Schwartz with the Weld County Sheriff’s Office said. Weld deputies were searching for Yates on a warrant and found him intoxicated at a house on the 1900 block of 8th Avenue, according to Greeley police.

Firefighters extinguish large grassland fire

Firefighters from Galeton, Briggsdale and the Platte Valley fire departments battled a blaze on about 250 acres of grassland Tuesday evening for about two hours before extinguishing it.

Firefighters were called to the scene near the intersection of Weld County roads 61 and 78, about 4 miles northeast of Galeton. No one was injured and no property was damaged, though the fire did threaten a structure and an oil tank battery before firefighters controlled it.

Greeley’s Young co-sponsors House bill to help grow Colorado’s high-tech industries

Rep. Dave Young, D-Greeley, joined Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and other state representatives and senators Monday to announce a bipartisan House bill that would help the state grow the high-tech sector and secure high-paying jobs the industry provides.

According to a news release from the Office of Economic Development and International Trade, House Bill 13-1001, co-sponsored by Young, Cheri Gerou, R-Evergreen, Sen. Rollie Heath, D-Boulder, and Sen. Pat Steadman, D-Denver, would provide an incentive that encourages more collaboration between industry, research institutions and federal laboratories, and private-sector funders. If passed, the legislation would create new highly skilled jobs, increase exports, drive innovation and capital investment and promote the state’s research and development activities.

Three people transported to NCMC after two-car crash

Three people were transported to North Colorado Medical Center after they were involved in a two-car crash on Friday at U.S. 34 and Weld County Road 17.

According to Sgt. Susan West, public information officer for the Greeley Police Department, Zachary May, 27, of Greeley, was a driver in one vehicle, and Vidal Segura-Iraheta, 40, of Evans, and Jose Contreras Rodriguez, 57, of Greeley, were in the other vehicle. All three were transported to NCMC in Greeley. West said none of the injuries were life threatening.

Chiropractor accused of sex assault agrees to close office

A Greeley chiropractor accused of sexually assaulting a woman while he was treating her has signed an agreement to cease operating his business while his case is further investigated.

The State Board of Chiropractic Examiners reviewed a complaint against Jack Cody, 65, and found that he “may have violated the Chiropractic Practice Act,” reads a stipulation for interim cessation of practice that was released on Thursday by the board. “And (he) may not be able to practice chiropractic with reasonable skill and safety to his patients.”

Big O holiday drive benefits Weld Food Bank

Big O Tires in Greeley closed a holiday food drive at the end of the year having collected 124 pounds of food to be donated to the Weld Food Bank.

The store also collected $40 in donations from customers, which translates to $200 in buying power for the food bank.

Man on Larimer County’s Most Wanted list arrested in Windsor

WINDSOR — A Fort Collins man featured last week on Larimer County’s Most Wanted list was arrested at a Windsor hotel on Thursday.

According to a news release from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrested Marc Robert Whitaker, 36, on multiple felony warrants at about 8:20 a.m.

Police thwart apparent suicide attempt at Greeley 7-Eleven

Greeley officers managed to safely subdue a 24-year-old Greeley man, wielding a large kitchen knife, who on Wednesday night told a 7-Eleven clerk he wanted police to kill him in the store.

Sgt. Susan West, spokeswoman for the department, said the man walked into the convenience store, 28th Avenue and 10th Street, after 9 p.m. and told the clerk to call police. She said the man told the clerk he wanted police to kill him because he couldn’t kill himself, and he then pulled out the knife and held it to his own throat. The clerk called police.

Weld commissioners announce new chairman

In a rotation of duties for the new year, Bill Garcia was announced the next chairman of the Board of Weld County Commissioners.

Garcia, who was re-elected to his second term as commissioner at-large in 2010, has served as chairman once before. He succeeds Commissioner Sean Conway, who served as chairman last year.
