Yes, Journey is the best game of the year. That's why I love you guys so much. You always pick the best, not the easiest.

I don't get why everyone is so disappointed. Journey was a good game and if I remember correctly, GOTY was decided by OUR votes and thus was decided by the majority of users. Rather, I am pleased with this outcome, but to each their own.

Time to go back and continue playing journey.

Well, I tried the journey demo and it was like watching paint dry.  I then forgot about it.  I sprang for the full game as it was on sale and assumed I must be missing something.  While it wasn't Paint Drying: The Full Version, and had it's moments,  .   .   .   GOTY?   .   .   .   Honestly?  Well, par for the course for Gamespot.  Since I've been on this site, their GOTY choices have produced some real head scratchers. The year that Crysis, COD4, Mass Effect, Portal, Bioshock and Rock Band came out they chose Super Mario Galaxy--which didn't even look as good as RE 4 which came out on an older system a year ealier.  They chose MGS 4 over GTA IV.  Demons Souls won over Uncharted 2 despite their scoring the former a 9.0 and the latter a 9.5.  As much as I like what I've played of Skyrim, it's inexcusable DLC issues and bugginess across all platforms prevent me from calling it GOTY.  My preference would have been Batman: Arkham City.  If a game this short can be GOTY then all bets are off.  Who knows, maybe the upcoming BL2 and ME3 DLC will be early 2013 contenders :P

The one that really deserves it is ME3. Journey is only one platform game, how it can be game of the year!!!

Egotte
Egotte

@Vitex2003 Yeah, gotta love how some $10 downloadable title, one that only lasts an hour or two, somehow manages to beat titles that had far greater quality content.  Game Informer got it right this year... looks like the rest of 'em missed it by a mile.

rtircoklled
rtircoklled

@Egotte  @Vitex2003 By no means did ME3 have greater quality content than Journey.  It had more content obviously but more doesnt mean better.  Went through both games and Journey deserves GOTY even though I have my own GOTY.  Not sure if the reason you're mocking it is because you never played, but if it is you should check it out its really good.

TWD should of won its not a 30 min game and it has way more depth then journey its the clear winner to me especially cuz usually websites try and pick something unique well i guess journey is considered more unique so it automatically wins just like what happened on ign

hey guys, which is longer arkham asylum or city?

LOWJ000
LOWJ000

 @goriv

Arkham City is a lot longer and far less backtracking. But I wouldn't play Arkham City until I have experienced Asylum! You get a Story Refresher at the beginning of Arkham City but it's so much fun to experience the story instead of just being told. You will also miss The Scarecrow Mission. So do yourself a favor and get both!

Just like how they are doing the "what type of gamer you are" series, they gave the game to all the "introverts" out there.  Including Gamespot themselves.  It is a joke that Borderlands 2 and FarCry didn't even make the finals list.  That in itself can not be taken seriously, let alone their choice for GOTY.  To give it to a game that literally takes 1/100th of the time to make should be an insult to all the game developers out there.

But Borderlands 2 & Far Cry 3 are still shooters, which are a dime-a-dozen. There's only one Journey.

Bexorcist
Bexorcist

@VikeWolf That's not really correct. One of my favorite games of all-time is 'To the Moon' which also didn't take multi-billiondollarcompanies & lots of time to create. Just the game itself is brilliant, just like this one prolly is though. From the ones I played I prefer dishonored, though.

It's funny how the people's choice for GOTY isn't even a nominee :O I don't think I've seen that happen before

Also I watched quite a bit of Journey gameplay and I have to say, even if it's the experience, the gameplay was literally walk, jump, and push flags/ribbons around. Also everyone's raving about the music but it seemed like music you could find all over youtube if you typed in "relaxing music." I'm sure it's very awesome to play, but I think in terms of content and overall gameplay, there are a lot better contenders. Voting for this as GOTY seems to be more of a statement and not much of an award to the best game.

NEWMAHAY
NEWMAHAY

@Oozyrat because it lost to a popularity contest to Walking Dead,

Voting for GOTY is not as good as a statement because multiplatform games will likely have an advantage and people will vote  what console they have/hate.

I know people voted on games they never played before too. I did.

PS. I'd much rather surf, weave and float down the sand dunes in Journey for countless hours than shoot countless numbers of people in Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect etc. There's a simple pure child like magic and joy in the first one instead of the just going through the motions feeling that I get from many of the other more blockbuster shooter games that people seem to think qualify as Game of the Year contenders. That is for absolute sure. I'm not saying they are bad just because they focus on shooting or movie like experiences but just because Journey doesn't focusing on shooting or cinematic explosions etc that most certainly does not mean it's a lesser interactive or immersive and fun gaming experience.

You really are commenting out of pure ignorance if you haven't actually played and experienced it first-hand.

There's a lot more to the experience of actually PLAYING in and through the world of Journey than just soulless walking, jumping and pushing ribbons than you can grasp without experiencing it first-hand. Especially when you have another player join in that PLAYING with you.

It's like telling a kid that's playing and creating things in a sandbox with just a shovel and bucket that they are just moving a shovel, bucket and sand around.

PLAY in the sandbox that is Journey and if you can't experience anything beyond just the physical sand, especially when another person joins in and plays with you, then I promise you that the problem lies with you and not the sandbox.

Trust me on this.

Absolutely agree with everything these guys said one billion percent.

Journey is an absolute masterpiece across all of entertainment, not just games, and it deserves to be recognized as such.

Very few games have ever made me feel and emote as much as Journey did.

It's one of those rare game experiences that reminds me why I love games, what's so amazing and magical about them and why I want them to be a part of my life forever.

It's my Game of the Year, of the decade even, by a long long way.

I love Journey so much it's amazing, so happy it won. The emotion in it is incredible, I played with one person for like 3/4 of the game then they just left and you just feel like so alone and that you had gone through so much with them. The most emotional part is walking with another person through the snow part and your both nearing death. Well done Journey.

Journey!  I'm so happy Gamespot is again highlighting games that MOVE people and are significant for the future, not just the biggest and baddest (ho hum).  IGN also picked Journey and their elegant two minute sequence of Games of the Year since 2001 is very elegant HERE:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEERLu_brSs

Oh, I thought for sure Lollipop Chainsaw would come out on top. Apparently artistic beauty wins over mindless violence. Out of curiosity which game was the best seller of 2012?

I'm in absolute agreement with the verdict.  Your first playthrough of Journey is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I pine for more games that so deeply engross the player.

I'm not arguing here and don't get me wrong, Journey is an amazing game but it lasted only around 2 hours. While it was truly amazing and cool I feel like a game that offers tons of time and replay value (Farcry 3, Halo 4, Borderlands 2, Fez, Mass Effect 3, The Walking Dead) should've won. Journey is a really great game but I find it hard to say that as far as worth, value, replayability, graphics, story, multiplayer, and originality it won against some the other games.

My personal favorites of the year: Farcry 3, Halo 4, and Fez!

ForceofNature9

 @Rickystickyman

Aside from Fez & The Walking Dead (2 other downloadable indie games), all the other games you mentioned are shooters. At this point in this console generation, no shooter deserves GOTY.
