    Nobuo Uematsu und band sind back: The Black Mages wurden bekannt durch ihre arrangementvorliebe zu den ältesten und bekanntesten titel der final fantasy saga. zugegeben sie hatten schon bessere veröffentlichungen hinter sich. vielleicht liegt es daran dass die songs die sie neu aufgelegt haben eine größere beliebtheit genießen als die jetzigen oder einfach an der tatsache dass nach und nach der synthesizer und die beliebte schwarze orgel tradionelle instrumente wie die elektronische gitarre ablösen und das ist durchaus bemerkbar. zumindest für die jenigen die die karriere der schwarzen magier seit ihrer entstehung schon verfolgen. echte fans jedoch erfreuen sich wohl eher der deutlichen entwicklung dieser band.

    zwei meiner meinung nach besten stücke dieser zusammensetzung sind the extreme (bekannt aus final fantasy VIII - zu besiegen galt es die neogothische hexe ide in ihrem absoluten zustand) dann grand cross (als neuauflage der kampfmusik gegen des ewige dunkle wobei ich hier eigentlich die verrückt-verspielte orgel vermisse die im original dominiert - final fantasy IX) und das wohl eher unbekannte kurayaminokumo. sehr gelungen aber auch ist der titelsong dieses albums das schon eine ganze reihe von neuen abmischungen hinter sich hat. die texte aus diesem stück erinnern mir persönlich immer an ave maria. ebenso ist es ein medley song aus vielen klassikern wie the wedding oder titeln aus längst vergangenen zeiten

    alles in allem kann diesem album schon eine leine anlegen und damit vor die tür gehen ohne sich für irgendetwas schämen zu müssen. es sei denn einem selbst ist es eher unangenehm eine orgel aus seinen kopfhörern schallen zu lassen. wer aber sich aber denkt “scheiß auf die allgemeinheit orgel argumentiert eh besser als ihr” dem lege ich vol. 3 der Black Mages nur ans herz. zudem bietet diese band dem hörer die gelegenheit sich für ältere videospielären zu interessieren oder sich zumindest noch einmal die ganzen alten soundtracks reinzuziehen ohne dass man von anderen verwundert angestarrt wird

    der letzte track gilt einem jungen namens yoshitaka welcher großer fan der Black Mages war. am 25. januar starb er an leukämie und mit dem titel life soll an ihm erinnert werden

  • New music this week

    Lots of it... so here we go. ;-)

    - I found http://www.ocremix.org and downloaded a metric ton of stuff. Kept probably half of it. Some of it is beautiful, some of it is quite out there... but there's a lot of talent to be heard.

    - From http://gh.ffshrine.org/ I got some Yoko Kanno from Vision of Escaflowne, and unfortunately was not much impressed with the music. I expect amazing things out of Yoko Kanno, especially considering her work on and , and when she sounds more ordinary, I'm disappointed. I had the some of the same issues last week while listening to some of her stuff from Macross PLUS, although some of that was the absolutely crappy quality of the recording.

    - Also from http://gh.ffshrine.org/ I got some Wada Kaoru, from the later version of . There was some nice stuff in here, but not much.

    - Followed a neighbor recommendation and tried out some DIR EN GREY and was completely not impressed. *shrug* It's the same thing with GACKT... he's very pretty to look at, but he doesn't do anything for me musically. I much prefer T.M.Revolution.

    - And then, to prove I'm not completely turning Japanese, I downloaded some old school Public Enemy. They had their heyday during my Metallica phase, so I didn't pay them much attention then. I regret it. :-p There are some incredibly powerful lyrics in their raps, a lot of which is still relevant today.

    For next week, I'll go back to the game music... I want to find Radiata Stories, which I just finished playing, and Xenosaga III, since Yuki Kajiura can do no wrong. ;-) I'll also probably go looking for Dirge of Cerebrus and .hack//GU if it's available.

  • Next Big Thing wins Battle of the Bands!

    My band, Next Big Thing, just won our local Battle of the Bands competition. We had to open the show, and we STILL beat out eight other bands. Anyway, I recorded the show from a DVD made and uploaded it on our website. Also, if you could vote for our artist pic on our last.fm music page (linked above), that would be great.

    Emphasized song titles. Seriously, the days of "Number 2 is my favorite track" are over. With ripped CDs, everyone knows the title that the artist chose for every song, and that's the way it should be. The title is the headline for what you are hearing. It's the first thing you should think before listening to a song, and the last thing you should think of when you are done.
