FINAL FANTASY IX ARTICLES

  • Ranking the Final Fantasy Series

December 29, 2009 - If there's one series that completely embodies the charm of the Japanese role-playing game, it's Final Fantasy. This legendary series, which is now more than twenty years old, has grown into a virtually universally recognizable entity, spawning spin-off action games, movies and more. With a heavy emphasis on character-driven stories and elaborate battle systems, it's easy to see why Final Fantasy has such a devoted following.

  • IGN Presents the History of Final Fantasy

June 26, 2009 - Final Fantasy is the longest swan song of all time. It was never meant to last, but now, more than two decades later, it remains the most recognizable name in role-playing games. More of an idea than a true series, it has evolved into something that a young Hironobu Sakaguchi would never recognize and almost single-handedly turned a small, struggling company into an international powerhouse. In the twenty years since it first arrived on Japanese Famicom systems, it's never once relied on nostalgia or conceded to rest on its laurels. Every new game has continued to press forward, and that's precisely what makes it one of the most interesting stories in game history.

  • Final Fantasy Reader Q&A

May 7, 2009 - You asked, and they answered; last week two of Square Enix's biggest talents found themselves in the damp heart of London to promote Dissidia, the PSP brawler that brings together heroes and villains from Final Fantasy's past and present – and we took the opportunity to present the two with some of your questions. Thanks to everyone who submitted a question, apologies to those whose queries didn't make it through – and keep an eye out for a special video feature soon, just to prove that we're not making it all up.

  • Top 10 Nobuo Uematsu Musical Moments

December 8, 2008 - In a little over two decades, Nobuo Uematsu has succeeded in becoming perhaps the single most widely recognized composer in video games. While it was the Final Fantasy series that propelled him to stardom from the beginning (and certainly vice versa to some degree) Uematsu has contributed to numerous other blockbusters over the years as well – everything from Chrono Trigger to Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

  • Final Fantasy Reader's Choice

May 20, 2008 - We culled through over 1000 comments and over 10,000 votes for who the FF fans want to see get their due in the age-old tradition of making lists that will never please everybody. Again, the following is based on the die-hard fans who cared enough to talkback in the Comments section, and who also cast votes in each of the five articles' polls.

  • Top 25 Final Fantasy Characters - Day IV

May 15, 2008 - Our Top 25 list of All-Time Final Fantasy characters enters day four, and brings us to the Top 10. well, the first half anyway. Several characters from the popular franchise have been represented thus far, and as the final spots are revealed, we promise that there are a few surprises are in store.

  • Top 25 Final Fantasy Characters - Day III

May 14, 2008 - The third day of our Top 25 Final Fantasy Characters continues, with five more of Square Enix's finest joining this epic collection of fan-favorites.

  • Top 25 Final Fantasy Characters - Day 1

May 12, 2008 - Our top-10 list of Final Fantasy VII characters was apparently a fairly big hit in some quarters (including the offices of a certain famous game company). Thus, we thought we'd try something a little more ambitious, and take on the whole entire series this time. 25 of Square Enix's brightest and best get the IGN Stars treatment, with five characters a day, for five days, all this week. If nothing else, this one should serve as an even more effective argument-starter.

  • Franchise Players 2: Reader's Choice

April 16, 2008 - Last week, Stars presented the first Franchise Players line-up, where we selected a handful of popular videogame characters who deserved their own movie franchises. Unlike the past glut of terrible game-to-movie adaptations, we felt characters like Solid Snake and Alucard had the right stuff to inspire satisfying, worthwhile flicks. Whether you agreed with our choices or loathed them, everyone seemed to have an opinion on which games, if any, were capable of inspiring quality cinema. This intrigued us. After reading through page after page of comments, we assembled a list of eight characters or groups that IGN readers wanted to see on screen.

  • Dear Friends: Final Fantasy in San Francisco

March 9, 2005 - Having already attended Nobuo Uematsu's first Dear Friends concert in Los Angeles last year, I already knew that I was in for a good show -- but having my wife at my side while we were surrounded by our hometown crowd gave this third-ever performance of an already-excellent recital an extra special meaning. The sold-out crowd of just under 3200 people seemed to share that sentiment as well, because the buzz around the auditorium was near-deafening at the conclusion of almost every song, announcement, and introduction.
