Saints Row: The Third sells 5.5 million
THQ president Jason Rubin reveals open-world action game reaches new sales milestone, though unclear if figure is sold through or sold-in.
THQ's open-world action game Saints Row: The Third has now sold 5.5 million copies, according to a tweet from company president Jason Rubin. It is not clear if the figure represents sold-through to consumers or sold-in (i.e shipped) to retailers. It also does not take into account Humble THQ Bundle sales.
"5.5 million people (pre Humble Bundle) can't be wrong," Rubin said. "Saints Row was the hit nobody realized was a hit!"
Saints Row: The Third released during November 2011 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. It notched a warm critical reception and shipped more than 4 million units as of April 2012. For more, check out GameSpot's review of Saints Row: The Third.
I live this game because it has the most random WTF missions I have ever played.
love*
Surprisingly fun game, I wish the adored GTA series would include free saving and checkpoints during missions...
Sasha Grey...I would love to Row you...
If this article were about GTA V, it would be titled "GTA V sells ONLY 5.5 million.
This game is hilarious, completely worth the price on steam.
Very good game, I enjoyed it plenty. Hopefully we'll see a sequel with bigger, varied environments and more things to do.
Got my copy off of steam for only 5.99 a few months ago. What a deal! I was surprised how good the game actually was!
godzillavskong Same here, and I'm sure that is why they reached 5.5 million, thanks to Steam.
I grabbed this recently, amazing game XD
best game ever
5.5 million.... If Steam achievements are obtained at about the same rate on consoles then that means over half a million people have gotten the "Your Backseat Smells Funny" achievement.
I got it on PC when it first game out. Great game, though there were notable omissions from the previous game, so I could understand why some folks were ticked off. I still enjoyed it quite a bit regardless.
I am currently playing through the full package version on pc right now. I am loving it.
Link3301
One annoying thing about that full package... the Vampire DLC gives you a bunch of free xp and there's no way to turn it off. You have to get a mod to make that part go away.
I 100%ed SR# with all achievements
I officially hate the franchise
I loved Saints Row 3, but wasn't so happy it went into zombie territory the last part of the game. I missed the activities that were on SR2 - I would have loved more septic avenger and Fuzz, those were fun....
Was blown away by how much fun this was and none of the extra activities felt tedious like in alot of sandbox games. Those figures are deserved should be more infact.
I love the SR series but i didn't really like 3 that much. I played SR2 for countless hours but for SR3, played for a couple of hours and sold it
This game is better than GTA 4. Fun > failed real-life simulator.
I bought it when a lot of others did too (according to my friends list) - when it sold for $20 on Steam.
this was one of my favorite games last year i had so much fun with it, worth buying.
It's not hard to believe. People like this franchise and others like it, that's why you keep making these games. You make subtle changes on them or add something a little new and leave it. I like the gangster mob type stuff. It's a good action experience
and does not cause school shootings.
@sanechupp "and does not cause school shootings" either that was a bad joke or just an highly uniformed statement.Either way I feel that was stupid and insensitve to say.Espcially after what has happened.Back to the what you said Games don't make anyone kill another human. You have to already be disturbed to be able to do something like that.
Yeah, but THQ is in the pooper.
I just picked up a brand new copy of the complete edition. I appreciate that they put it out there all on disc. Complete editions are the only games that get my money nowadays.
Very cool and fun game, really violent and you get all the weapons you could want to take out your enemies! The VTOL Jet is really cool with it's laser and photon torpedoes.
Hopefully version 4 will make it out! Just when a game comes into it's best that's usually when the company crumbles...
Game companies are like new car makers, the first cars are crap, people buy/get suckered into them and the company makes money, eventually the cars are worth the price.
The middle of the game could use some filler, i noticed only the Professor Genki and the various odd mini games like the snatch and tank mayhem or insurance fraud. Those are o.k. because you have no choice but to try to play them if you want to unlock the bonuses in the game and upgrades, but it would be so much cooler if you could interact more with the actual city you are in. The city is pretty much detached from the actual game, the city feels like your just playing with your character in a train set where everything is fake and just a backdrop with no interactions. Too bad because with all the colorful signs and wild building decorations it's really odd that it almost invites you to go into the buildings to see just what the spectacular signs and billboards are touting about the interiors of the buildings only to get stopped by a texture mapped front door...
I think that would be the next major challenge for game designers of this magnitude of game, I would call it a 2 layered game world.
Layer 1 The exterior
Layer 2 The interior
Can you imagine that? It could be done. The Sims3 actually does this pretty well, even though there are a few "Rabbit holes" in the Sims3.
Loved this game, I treated as fun game. Not very challenging though. First hours are hilarious.
Hope the next one is better. It's all about the toys you get to play in this open-world (V-Tol anyone?).
Tzardok I really wish they would make a Saints Row Superhero Sandbox Game, They are 1 step away with this game engine. Even the Characters in Saints Row 3 are so wacky and have such outlandish personalities that it's almost perfect. I'd like to take that V-TOL jet apart, put the Laser into a characters head in place of EYES Viola! Laser Vision! Add the ability for a character to ba able to fly or Super Jump or Teleport Add Super Strength and be able to throw vehicles, that's already apparently in the code because some of the bigger enemies Olaf can knock vehicles around like stuffed animals, i don't even have to mention the ability to make any type of character you could want, with Image by design and the Clothing engine! Let's Pretend?
00J I 100% agree with you. They can already do something similar to the super-strength, since you basically have that with the Apoca-fists. :D
The first and last few hours of the game is some of the funnest you'll encounter in a game. A whole lot of "meh" in the middle though. Still worthy of its success though.
Unicorns are the worst.
Best funny game I have ever played. I didn't play from the beginning to the end of any sandbox games. But this game is the 1st one I play through all, I think SR3 is better than SR2 and I like its crazy style with unrealistic things in SR3.
namitokiwa Agreed. 5.5 million can't be wrong! Well very often 5 million people are wrong but in this case they are right.
SR3 > Skyrim
Phrosnite pfft.. wut?
awesome game, laughed my pants off playing it
jonasas2 Me too!
Wish I never bought this game. Got it for free with Skyrim.
Saints Row 3 was a horrid departure from what made Saints Row 1 & 2 so great. An amazing story line that endeared us to some over the top characters. SR3 spit in the face of the fans with the story and then went all oddball and perverse for no reason at all than a vain attempt to be in your face raunchy. I'd be very surprised if SR4 sells as well as SR3. I know I won't be buying it on release day.
valdarez Was Burt Reynolds in Saints Row 1 & 2? I think not! Also http://deckers.die was the best thing that happened in videogames in 2011.
valdarez Clearly gamers prefer this version of Saints Row.
valdarez agreed 100%, there was also much more linearity in the story. SR1+2 had choice in the story in which gangs you wanted to take on. This is just one story which you start from your phone..... boring. It only sold so well because it was living off the saints row 2 hype.
yanni1 valdarez I also agree, The story was my only complaint, People don't realize that SR 1&@ 2 had a good mix of sillyness and serious, SR3 was just batsh!t stupid crazy. The options in the ending made no sense, since the protagonist doesn't hate Killbane so much that he/she would consider letting Shaudi die just to take him down. AND WHAT ABOUT DEX?!?
Nice. Sasha Grey in the video. :P
I got this on Steam about a month ago now. Haven't played it yet. Got Sleeping Dogs on my computer instead. I'll get to this game, looks like it's completely insane sillyness.
We played the crap out of his one. Very funny and good game. Although I do not own it for myself.
I paid for the game twice. Once through PSN and again during the Steam summer sale.
Good for THQ and good for Rubin. I have a copy, I did my part.
SolidTy i bought 3 copies
AmnesiaHaze Well, I guess I have two copies if I count that Bundle deal I got, lol.
