GLaDOS voice appears in Pacific Rim trailer
First trailer for Guillermo del Toro's monster action movie features voicework of Ellen McLain as a roboto AI.
The first trailer for Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro's new film Pacific Rim has been revealed, and it features a voice gamers may know. The voice of Portal character GLaDOS, performed by Ellen McLain, appears in the trailer as a robot AI.
As for the film, Pacific Rim is a science-fiction movie where giant mechanized robots controlled by humans take on massive creatures who have risen up from the sea. The trailer suggests McLain's character will be on the side of the humans.
del Toro bringing the voice of GLaDOS to his next picture is not much of a surprise. The filmmaker told Kotaku last month that he is a "big fan" of Valve, noting that "Portal and Left 4 Dead have been instrumental family experiences at my house."
del Toro wins...
at least del toro didnt forcibly implant a big name cast into it just to bring the movie hype. it seems like he cast it based on who could fulfill the roles he had in mind, not just big name actors just so the movie would garnish some attention. there's also the possibility that he spent so much of producing the special effects that there wasnt much left for bigger name actors but either way i think that using relatively unknown actors/actresses is a good thing. it will help people focus on the characters themselves and not the actors playing them.
holy crap this movie came out of nowhere. i only recently heard about it on moviepilot and a mere weeks later a pretty damn big trailer comes out for it. plus i hear its got a staggering budget and warner bros gave del toro a ton of resources to work with for this movie. this movie is so out of left field that im pissing my pants in anticipation. next summer sounds like its gonna be a blast for sci-fi and comic book movies.
Giant monsters battle giant robots I think my childhood days of 4 pm japanese monster movie just came back with a vengeance.
Oh God, she's taking over. Run for it!
WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF THIS?!
'Peeing your pants in excitment' doesn't even come close to how much I want to see this movie now.
Now THIS is what the American Godzilla should've looked like. 14 years on and I'm still bitter...
Awesome-o! Looks hella cool!
GLaDOS voice won't make me watch this movie.
omg look like the most stupid movie ever
"Unleash the Kraken! Umm, no, I meant: Unleash the giant Master Chief look-alike robot!"
"...THROW THE CHEESE!"
it reminds me of King of the Monsters game
bongsyas_23 unless kids look it up on the internet right now, i dont think most would even know of that game because although it was a great game, even when it was in its prime it was pretty obscure. but yeah, it totally reminds me of kotm too when i think about it.
Well since Valve would like de Toro to direct a Half-life movie, please make one de Toro.
Get Wheatly in it and I might actually consider seeing this.
At first I thought GLaDOS was taking over the movie.
I'm all for having Ellen McLain voice another AI, but the fact that this one sounds exactly the same as GLaDOS - right down to the little bits of pitch distortion - is a bit annoying. Surely it couldn't be THAT difficult to make it reasonably distinct from her other work?
Hairygrim I understand what you are trying to say but they obviously picked Ellen McLain because of her undeniably decent work in 'Portal'. Therefore, why wouldn't they use the voice that they heard and desired to be part of their film, from the get go?
Hairygrim the reason del toro picked her is because of her relation to her portal work and from what he mentions, obviously purposely kept her voice sounding like glados. im sure people will appreciate the fan service more than despair due to the lack of originality.
I wouldn't be surprised to find Tara Strong around the corner too.
THAT Travis Beacham wrote this film?
I don't expect it to have a story that is beyond an excuse for the use of expensive props and dazzling CGI.
Gelugon_baat We have no idea how far into the film the trailer goes so there could easily be a decent plot going on & it could have some great twists. No reason to let your hopes drop yet.
Gelugon_baat this is what i like to call a popcorn movie. its a movie where you just have a good time watching it without analyzing it to death.
I find it hard to believe that Guillermo del Toro would have a part in this film. I thought he's too classy for a mecha-versus-kaijuu movie. :/
EVANGELION!
ryogapower
Or as close as we'll ever get.
Looks/sounds like a weird Portal/NGE mix up. Kind cool, as far as brain candy goes.
Movie looks too serious to have GLaDOS' voice in it. I can't help but snicker whenever I hear it. It's just too funny.
If they can defeat the aliens... then there will be cake
Starbuck_X The cake is a lie.
I don't know, man--putting GLaDOS into a giant robot suit is just asking for trouble. ;) Love it!
It reminds me of Starship Troopers (the book, not the terrible movies)
LiveByMeDieByMe Ah, c'mon. The first Starship Troopers film was good.
-Jonce-
For those of us that never read the book, or even knew that there was a book, yeah it was. For the people that did though, it seemed to disappoint them.
I never read the book so the movie was fine to me.
-Jonce- LiveByMeDieByMe starship troopers (the movie) rocked! i never read the book and although some of the acting was cringe worthy at times, the effects, the nudity, the gore, the violence, and jake busey as well as nph more than make up for it.
This is so goddamn disrespectful to Portal.
Ah the Big-O thrust punch. What else is there to talk about?
brxricano
Cast in the name of God, ye not guilty
Del Toro, do you like videogames?...
Then why do you do this to them?
I dont like this one tiny little bit.......GlaDos's voice is a trade mark....no other robot should ever use it.......
RIIIIKU Gabe Newell gave his permission and blessing for Ella McLain to lend her voice.
RIIIIKU Plus Del Toro loves Valve! I think it's only fitting that he can have GLaDOS in his dream movie.
I saw the Giant Robot trailer yesterday. I like del Toro, so I was already prepared for next summer.
Giants robots, giant monsters, and Ella McLain.
Count me in.
Guillermo del Toro! that's all you need to know. But SAMCRO gona take down some Giant Monsters with GLaDOS, Idris Elba, and Rinko Kikuchi? Aww man it's on!
I so recogniced her there!
I would personaly like to see either a Voltron or Robotech movie. Hell, even Star Blazers!
J4m3sR4n0r72 Supposedly there was a Robotech live action movie in the works, but I haven't heard any new developments on it in quite some time. It would be one of the most epic mecha movies ever if in the right hands.
Derpalon
A properly done Voltron movie would also be epic as long as it's Lion Voltron and not Vehicle Voltron.
