Hitman: Absolution Review

Hitman: Absolution's vivid world and enjoyable stealth-action gameplay overshadow its few notable inconsistencies.

The Video Review

Kevin VanOrd wears all the disguises as he reviews Agent 47's return in Hitman: Absolution.

The Good

  • The best missions are open-ended and allow you to be stealthy or shooty
  • Stealth gameplay is tense and challenging
  • Excellent production values instill a strong sense of place.

The Bad

  • AI inconsistencies diminish the action
  • Multiple linear, anticlimactic sequences.

Hitman: Absolution is an intense mix of serenity and obscenity, its foul-mouthed criminals and grubby henchmen adding a layer of thick grime to otherwise quaint small-town streets and warm desert sands. Returning antihero Agent 47 is a ruthless contrast to both the beauty of his surroundings and the foul crooks he butts heads with; he's a steadfast and well-dressed killer who finds pleasure in careful planning and clean kills. Once again, he dons his brightly buffed shoes and exercises a combination of stealthy maneuvering and brute force to end the lives of those most deserving of their demises. Not every method of murder is as satisfying as you'd want, but Absolution plays well and looks sumptuous.

More intriguingly, it fills its world with such disgusting wastes of space that you're happy to lodge bullets in their heads. The best missions immerse you in Hitman: Absolution's twisted look at Americana and are teeming with contemptible characters drawn from the bottom of the cultural barrel. You may even find 47's initial actions hard to witness: his first contract is to assassinate his former handler at The Agency, Diana Burnwood, who has apparently gone rogue. Her last wish as you watch her perish by your own hand: that you protect a girl named Victoria and, in turn, be branded as a traitor.

The primary villain is a snarling crime lord with a big cowboy hat and a down-home drawl named Blake Dexter. Every rank word that oozes out of this snake charmer's mouth is pure poison, though the human stains that assist him strive to outdo his obnoxiousness at every turn. The crudeness can become overbearing; one target's dying observations are so crass that it's hard to imagine that even the most dirty-minded players would snicker at them. Elsewhere, you encounter a team of assassins called The Saints: women dressed as sexy nuns for no obvious reason other than, well, that's just what they do. In such cases, you get the sense that the game is trying too hard to be edgy. Other events and characterizations are more successful, often because they're steeped in dark humor--such as a hysterically memorable moment involving you, a food delivery man, and an elevator.

This sequel embraces the mechanics of previous Hitman games in the ways that matter most. You enter a level with an objective--generally, to off a mission-critical hooligan--and you can accomplish it in any number of ways. The most satisfying and challenging method is to sneak about, crouching behind cover to avoid being spotted, choking enemies from behind with your garrote, or diverting their attention by throwing a brick or some other object. As in most stealth games, you want to remove any bodies you leave behind, lest your victim's cronies come sniffing around (and they most definitely will). Usually, that means dragging the corpse to a bin or wardrobe and dumping it inside.

All sorts of objects are scattered around for you to use, beyond distraction items like bricks and screwdrivers. You come across gasoline canisters (shoot them for a nice big boom), proximity mines (place them just right and your target explodes into bits while you watch from the sidelines), microscopes (hide in plain sight by pretending you're a scientist), and so forth. Of course, the distinctive-looking 47 wouldn't pass as a scientist in his smoothly pressed suit, so you should probably look the part by punching out a researcher, donning his clothes, and throwing him in a closet.

And so you move through each environment, poking around to see what tools the level might offer for the quietest kill--or the most dramatic, or even the sloppiest. There is great satisfaction in coming across a sniper rifle and landing a sequence of headshots from a window above a crowd, particularly given how you can steady your aim by gently squeezing the trigger before fully depressing it and firing your shot. You might clear out the majority of the level this way, but as you slink toward your destination, you notice all these baubles that you missed, all those lost chances to distract guards by triggering car alarms, all those disguises you never wore. Those lost opportunities, the chances to improve your score by treading even more carefully, and the game's built-in sub-challenges (wear every possible disguise; don't wear any disguise) inspire multiple replays.

On the default difficulty, getting caught doesn't have to be a big deal. 47 can take a lot of damage, and he can use a number of weapons to help him out of a jam. You come across pistols, machine guns, shotguns, and so forth: all the tools of the killing trade. You approach the action as you would in a cover shooter, crouching behind obstacles or pressing against pillars, and then popping out to fire a few shots. You won't be running and gunning, though it is possible to be overwhelmed by sheer numbers if you're particularly careless. Should this happen, you can perform point shooting, which allows you to slow down time, mark your victims, and then fire a succession of bullets with a single button press.

Point shooting is visually stimulating. The camera closes in on the victim, and you watch his head thrust backward from the impact of the bullet in slow motion. In the soundtrack, rising dissonant chords underscore the violence, the music culminates in a cry from the trumpets, and the phrase comes to a rest on a single, unison drone. If only the standard shooting had substance to accompany that style. Your enemies aren't very smart once they get to shooting a gun. Sometimes they continue to fire at the spot where they believe you to still be, even once you have moved out of the way. But all too often, they just waste countless rounds trying to shoot through doors when they have no line of sight, run directly past you toward some cover location on the other side of the room, or pay no attention when you snipe the guy standing right next to them. This doltish behavior takes the bite out of the direct approach--as does the occasional sight of a limb or gun barrel clipping through a wall.

I really like this game. People are complaining to much about a couple of liner moments in the game, which honestly are not that often and when you get back to the open ended parts you completely forget. Overall this game is great. I love the Hitman games alot,, and while this is not my favorite one, i still think this is just as good as any of the previous games. 7.5 is good, but really, 8.0 seems a little more appropriate considering the review. .5 might not be that big of a difference but that .5 tells me that this game is worth getting being a fan. Regardless I'm extremely happy with this game. Lets hope they take the criticisms from this game and  they make these games even better from here on out.

It deserves a 7.0. A linear Hitman game is just complete garbage. It's a good action game for anyone who wants such thing ( i don't, when i buy a Hitman game).

I never thought i would see the inparcial, indifferent, emotionless, "i don't give a single fuck" 47 clone so actionized, mad and acting like Clint Eastwood in my life.

I liked this game. I think it deserves a better score than this.

I've noticed that GameSpot has been rating games very low lately juxtaposed with IGN (for example).  I think this game is freakin' awesome.  I've played the first few levels just to see how many different way I can kill people.  Tainted cocaine, electrocutions, death by fireworks, exploding stoves...

I'm just not thrilled that EVERY Chicago police officer (and other NPC factions members) "knows" the face of every NPC in their faction. That seems like a feature that should only be used by NPCs on the professional difficulties. Even on those difficulty levels, Instinct burns almost too quick to not be noticed. Then a shootout ensues and I'm left with -189,000 points!  It says "play your way" and yet your score is penalized for not using stealthy actions (granted stealth is the main focus of Hitman, it just feels wrong to give me a negative score for killing douchbags in the game!)

Regardless of the Reviews.  If you enjoyed it in the end, then you got your moneys worth.  I love how people are influenced by these so called "Reviews"...think for yourselves for a chage people.

As long as u put console version and PC version in same basket, descent games like this one gonna have bad score. Of course it is absolutely reviewers mistake because they are generalizing the overall score including the console versions. Also developers have a big part in it, because they are intentionally making the PC versions dumber, just to be as much as they can similar to the console versions.

We all know that PC versions are much much better, just because PC is more powerful reliable and gives much more choices and what is most important, it is meant for real gamer public.

I wish Kevin would give this game the "Extreme Baditude" and "Gratuitous Swearing" emblems, because there isn't 1 scene in the entire game where a character doesn't drop the f word, including the nuns!

TheEveryMan I think that was a deliberate choice on the writer's part. I don't mind excessive swearing, it's all about how well it's executed.

lmao played this game without even read any review. then i come expecting a 9.0+ and ... 7.5? ROFL. its ridicoulous. to each their own i guess,  this was the most original experience i had in years along with dishonored.

@honestbenjamin your right about the disguises but i gotta say this is probably my favorite hitman game and overall my best xbox game at the moment lol

honestbenjamin 15 pts

After the first few levels I thought. WOW, this is going to be a great game ! but after a few more my opinion has changed so much.. I cannot believe how useless disguises are ! They are blown from miles away by anyone in mere seconds. Also, they only need a 'pinhole' line of site to start detecting/seeing through your disguise. eg. poke your nose hair around a corner while wearing your disguise for longer than a few seconds and you suddenly hear a scream, "HEY YOU !!! I KNOW YOU ! COME HERE !"

Wow, a lot of disappointing reviews. Guess I will buy a used version when it drops in price. I'm glad I have a myriad of games yet to play. Current game in the "Box": Dead Space. . . and loving it!

Man this game is short! I beat it in 7 hours or so.. I know its normal for an ordinary shooter, and this absolution just feels for me like a shooter!

Try to approach the steath way.. Make 1 mistake, and bam! The only option then left is to shoot your way out, and that happens way to early for me.. So all levels were shooter levels for me.. Ok its a nice shooter, but for hitman appeal i say a NOGO! They screwed hitman so hard here.. In the other hitmans when you have made a fault you could clean up and remain silent. In here, not possible!

FarQall 20 pts

All show no go!

Repetitive linear gameplay of sneak, subdue, dump zzzzzzz

Cant save game due to bug so no point playing.

Generous 7.5 score.

If i can still get through most missions without killing anybody but the main target like in the last three hitman, i'll be a happy man. Trying it tomorrow most likely. I foresee hours and hours of replaying missions to get it just the way i want. And that's exactly what i love about this series. It's been WAY too long, Blood money was what? 6 years ago? Damn...

The last comment though, i don't know why but contextual controls has become a real plague in recent years. Devs somehow FAIL to recognize that contextual controls is a MAJOR FAIL if you can use the same button for different actions in the SAME SPOT. It was a bit of a plague in Saint's Row the Third and i've been playing DC universe Online for months and there's a little of f that in this game too. Now to read it's also in Hitman... I could see how it could break the game.

m1nd7r1p 6 pts

I don't know why reviewers think this game is so good--it f***ing sucks. And not because of the story, the plot, or the characters--it's because of the f***ing game interface. Take, for just one example, the first part of the Terminus level, and play it on Purist. Getting the elevator sequence just right is beyond maddening, *because they put multiple items in that location that are all activated by the Y button (on xbox 360)*. That's right, hitting Y *might* call the elevator, or it *might* switch objects in your hand with something on the ground. I've been playing that f***ing sequence for 2 hours, and every time I get exposed while trying to get on the f***ing elevator because the Y button won't open the elevator door--either it switches the item in my hand with something on the ground, or it simply refuses to activate the elevator button. Moving around randomly and mashing Y finally gets it to activate the elevator, but not until *after* I've been discovered, blowing my specialist rating. It's bullshit like this that f***ing makes a game f***ing suck--shi**y interfaces that are poorly polished. I'm sorry I bought the f***ing thing, and having played every previous Hitman game, all on the hardest difficulty and scoring Silent Assassin on every level prior to this game, I can say that hands down, this is the worst f***ing interface I've ever dealt with in a Hitman game. F you, Io. F you.

boolzero 5 pts

@m1nd7r1p Pressing and holding... That was my issue as well. As long as you remember that to open doors you only need to press the Y button and not hold the button, your problems will most likely be solved. I had the same issue in the same exact spot and earlier by the lobby in the clerks room where I was trying to open a door and just kept swapping the fire extinguisher next to it with the item in my hand. It wasn't until the elevator that I realized what I had been doing and once I corrected myself I had no issues since. Doors are tap, item pick ups and such are press and hold. Problem (mostly) solved!

Just finished playing on normal....

Surely better than 7.5..

I know it has its flaws but ur just ignoring how nicely it has been introduced as a mainstream stealth shooter.

There are dozens of ways to play and complete this game. You will be baffled at the amount of possibilities.

If you find it easy you can always increase difficulty.

But the best part of the game is Contracts. It is very innovative concept.

8.5 for me.

SonicIQ 5 pts

He basically gave the game the same score that the "bashed" kane & Lynch games got. Weird.

Said it before and I'll say it again, Kevin VanOrd is a great video game reviewer.  If you don't agree with him that's fine.  Peace.

Alex_09 10 pts

7.5 is probably more than it deserves and not bad by any means. I especially love the "original games don't get the respect they deserve line". Yeah COD blows, this game is still original in all the wrong ways. "Hey kids, remember that great sandbox game where you could equip what you like and do what you want in a carefree OR meticulous manner? Well we've removed the freedom, the sandbox, and the options for variety in gameplay. We've also added linearity and dumbed down mechanics to suit the dumbed down AI, but the graphics are better than they've ever been!" 7.5 is generous to me, and I don't want another game in the series and don't really expect one if they continue this trend. Square Enix should just open a butcher shop and find a way to deal with their sick obsession.

Alex_09 i think you are the kind of person don.t have pacience

and thinks the game very difficult ..and you say the a.i is bad bla bla bla

I'm not playing in the most difficult

but I'm playing on hard

a.i the enemy's hard and unforgiving ...

the game is very challenging,is not for anyone, nowadays people are stupid and just want things easy ... It is guaranteed that

ewjiml 63 pts

Alex_09 What variety and sand box mechanics have they removed?  Please tell me I would like some examples.

boolzero 5 pts

@ewjiml @Alex_09 I was going to say the same! For all those claiming that this game is somehow more linear than any of the previous games including Blood Money, well, you guys really need to go back and replay those games! Not just go back and play them, but also take note of their design, mechanics and level layout. You'll be surprised to find that this game actually does have more options available to you then the previous ones. I've been playing this series since the very first game (PC) released and while the illusion of non-linearity has gotten better, the games are all still very linear affairs in that there is a limited and finite manner of ways to enter, exit, and pull off what you need to do. There has never been any total freedom, but rather a varied selection of set options to reach your goal with a finite set of branching paths to reach them. I still see "three ways in, one way out" game design, just like the previous Hitman games. If anything, this game is only guilty of is being a little more obvious how to clear a mission without too many re-attempts. That still doesn't however, take away the numerous options you have available within the mission level to do so.

BunDCrons_basic 5 pts

@boolzero Do you actually know what "Linear" means? A-Straight-line. Most of the levels are not a sandbox environment. They are point a to point b levels. Chinatown, streets of hope, arena, cornfields, courthouse, gun shop. These are the only sandbox maps. They took away the safehouse, and being able to take what you want on a mission. Only the agency weapons can be modded. They took a lot of good aspects out of hitman, which should never happen. This review is missing a real mention of the contracts mode. Guven the abiltiy to choose any map and set targets and how to kill them is awesome. Especially when as soon as I make it, its available for everyone to play and rate it. As wells as being able to challenge any friends to a contract. Im the third deadliest assassin in canada. DooDooBrownxXx.

ewjiml 63 pts

I think this game is awesome.  There is a lot of variety when it comes to killing. Yeah so the AI is kinda stupid but if the AI were super smart, it probably would have ruined the experience for me.

SPOILER ALERT:

So, I played the King of Chinatown level twice.  One time, I disguised myself as a chef and grabbed a can of gasoline.  When he looked over the grill, I poured the gas on the grill and he lit up.  Second time, I disguised myself as a drug dealer and he followed me down some stairs.  I then whipped out my garotte....(i am sure you can figure out the rest).  People claiming that the game is linear is complete bs.  It is right on line with the rest of the Hitman series so I suggest before you use this review as your bible, give it a try.  Ton of fun.

lpsyco666 55 pts

ewjiml I played this level for 15 times .. and loved almost all ....in hard mode i.a is not stupid..i say...

ewjiml 63 pts

 lpsyco666

I am playing in hard mode...it is brutal.  What I mean by kinda stupid is that you can kill a guy and then just wait it out per say in a trash can for like two minutes then they forget.  But if they didn't i guess people would cry about it being too hard.  Btw, all the people claiming the AI is too easy obviously have not played this game.  It is unforgiving if you make mistakes sneaking around.

ThyDavideth 21 pts

So after playing 8 hours of this game (I heard it takes 20 hours to complete) this is my view on your review: The AI inconsistencies diminish the action and multiple linear, anticlimactic sequences is what made this game a 7.5? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Why can't you come up with something more logical like "Agent 47 has a band aid in the back of his head." GOD! WHO CARES ABOUT ANTICLIMACTIC SEQUENCES? That is NOT WHY PEOPLE PLAY THESE GAMES!!!! Just give the game a 1.0 for having violence if you are going to be this absurd.

F**k the score if you always buy games based on the score you will be sadly disappointed by most games and missing out on some really good ones the truth is hitman absolution is a good game its just not a good hitman game.It feels like hitman with stabilizers on its not suppose to be a linear experience (compared to older hitman games) and the new checkpoint system sucks if you have to reload a checkpoint anyone you killed or knocked out is alive and well wtf is that about??? it doesn't break the game its just really annoying another drawback is the non existent weapon loadouts at least give us a silenced pistol 47 has been a professorial assassin for the last 12 years he hasn't got a silencer lying around somewhere??? the disguise system is also flawed apparently police/guards have xray vision and eyes in the back of their heads they know your in disguise without even looking at you if your close to them this makes sense but if your 70m away in a dark alley or something they would have no clue. Developers need to stop dumbing down games to try to appeal to the masses all it does is p**s off the real fans and pick up very few if any new fans i guess we will have to wait another 6 years to see if we get a worthy sequel to blood money.

cyraxvisionz I don't know about that, legend of zelda is amazing, so is dark souls and metal gear solid among many others I am rarely disapointed. I've found that playin games with the highest scores is much more enjoyable. There are good games with bad scores, but the reason for those scores is usually glitches or lack of depth.

cyraxvisionz 12 pts

xDeadMarchx im not saying high scoring games are bad games but one thing all the games you have listed have in common is they stay true to the roots of the franchise they have all added new things to the games but they haven't forgotten what made them great where as hitman ac3 ghost recon brothers in arms and many more have been watered down well in bia case done a complete u turn this doesn't make them bad games but it certainly isn't what loyal fans wanted to see happen.

hireath 9 pts

well...  hitman absolution probably is a 7.5, but it's more fun than most 9.0 games.

okay if you play it like 'intended' then AI is bad, the levels are short and linear and kinda boring.  but if you treat it like a sandbox and just go on a killing spree, the AI is endless fun at creating GOD versus dumb thug set pieces.

it has to be potentially one of the most morally 'wrong' games ever made.  you can walk around with a knife cutting throats of civilians and throwing knife into their head - and it's actually fun :/

xDeadMarchx 64 pts

hireath metacritic scores are more reliable, in my experience. Keep in mind that you're supposed to just read the review, the scores are probably just about arbitrary lol.

I don't understand. 7.5 is a good review? This isn't IGN it's Gamespot, so not every game gets an automatic 9.5. I think people need to be more critical in their scoring of games, I mean how could you ever score a game 10/10 unless it was absolutely perfect? And if there ever is a game that is absolutely perfect, the rating will be undermined because so many games have such high ratings. A game's price isn't relative to how good it is, so I want to know exactly what I'm buying.

LOL. That's gamers for you; we simply can't accept anyone who expresses differing opinions than our own. I must say, I'm quite embarrassed to remember that I, too, behaved in such a manner. Hell, I probably still do.

All the usual criticisms/demands are present in these comments. You have people boldly---not boldly, since it's easy to make such demands when you're an anonymous user----demanding that Kevin be fired for his review score (LOL! Seriously!), which isn't even that bad (as you too acknowledge). You have others using the age old tactic of bringing up different review scores for other games, which were likely written by "different" reviewers, as a means to discredit "this" review.  "They gave Halo a 9+, why not this!?" Hilarious. There's even the mention of "bribes" to rate games higher. So........If bribes are required to rate games higher, should I consider this review honest?

I bet the GS reviewers get a kick out of reading these comments.
