The Undetectable Firearms Act and 3D-printed guns (FAQ)

Citing the threat of plastic, 3D-printed firearms, U.S. Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., held a press conference this weekend calling for the renewal of the Undetectable Firearms Act. The act was originally conceived in 1988 in response to the Glock 17, a handgun with some components made from plastic composites.

The law has been renewed several times since its inception, most recently in 2003. It's currently due to expire in December 2013.

For gun rights advocates, the Undetectable Firearms Act comes across as legislative hand-wringing. Others find the law to be an example of security theatrics and a … Read more

Rapper's wild Microsoft Store performance triggers police call

A Microsoft Store stirred up more excitement than expected when a rapper's performance got out of hand.

Appearing at Microsoft's Atlanta retail store last Friday, rapper Machine Gun Kelly quickly revved into high gear, jumping on tables filled with desktops and laptops, throwing a promotional sign, and giving the finger to Microsoft employees urging him to get down.

The rapper also let loose a string of expletives at the store staffers and reportedly stomped on five computers before the staff cut off the music and his microphone, according to Web site AllHip.com. Annoyed that his performance was … Read more

The Golden Gate gets a big gun

Visitors to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, just north of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge, will soon be able to check out a massive new World War II-era battleship gun.

The 16-inch gun, originally mounted on the USS Missouri, saw significant action during World War II, and according to the National Park Service, is featured prominently in photographs of the Japanese surrender ceremony that took place aboard the Missouri on Sept. 2, 1945. It will soon be installed in Battery Townsley, in the Marin Headlands area of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

You don't bring a 3D printer to a gun fight -- yet

Welcome to the dark side of 3D printing.

The hobby is best known for creating colorful toys and trinkets, but some enthusiasts are working on design files that would allow anyone to print a working gun. These don't exist yet, but some believe it's only a matter of time.

Why would a 3D-printed gun be appealing? For one, it could potentially be cheap. You can buy a preassembled 3D printer for about $500. A spool of ABS plastic to print with goes for $50. Depending on where you shop, you can buy .38 Special ammunition for 30 cents a round. The plans will undoubted be distributed free like so many MP3s. … Read more

Portal goes steampunk with gorgeous gun replica

The Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, better known as the Portal gun, has been lovingly re-created in the real world by many fans.

Sculptor Duncan Shirah has taken a slightly different approach to his Portal gun. The sleek, modern trappings are stripped away and we're left with an incredible steampunky gun full of polished wood, glass, and brass accoutrements.

This is what would happen if Portal collided with "Wild Wild West." The only question is what would happen if the device actually worked. Would you leave your test chamber and end up in Sherlock Holmes' sitting room?… Read more

Revolver-shaped screwdriver guns for your fix-it projects

I imagine there's someone out there whose sole job it is to think up ways to make power tools even more manly. That person dreamed up the Drill Gun Power Screwdriver from Gadgets and Gear.

The Drill Gun is a power screwdriver in the shape of a snub-nose revolver. This tool is clearly pandering to the stereotypically testosteroned crowd, the kind of guys who might buy advance tickets to "The Expendables 2."… Read more

Man orders flat screen on Amazon, gets assault rifle

Amazon always offers such delightful surprises.

Often a box is lying on my doorstep and my heart leaps because someone has sent me a gift. Only then do I realize that, yet again, I did some late-night online shopping after a small nightcap.

One can imagine, though, that Seth Horvitz of Washington, D.C. must have felt giddy when the flat-screen TV he had bought through a third-party vendor on Amazon arrived at his apartment.

As MyFoxDC dispatches it, Horvitz eagerly opened the box, only to find a Sig Sauer SIG716.

This happens to be, as the Sig Sauer Web site declaims: &… Read more

Aurora shootings on Twitter: The unforgivable and the serious

When an event as senselessly painful as the Aurora shootings occurs, it's inevitable that Twitter -- where feelings are expressed instantly and often without thought -- will reveal humanity's inner self.

So as the sheer horror of the murders was exposed through witness accounts, the tweets flowed in reaction.

Pride of place, surely, went to the Celeb Boutique fashion store. It was so excited that the hashtag #aurora was trending that it couldn't contain its feelings.

"#Aurora is trending, clearly about our Kim K inspired dress ;)" said the tweet, with a link to the Kim … Read more
